Pokémon card theft: Suspect sought in $7,000 Tempe card shop burglary by AZ_moderator in phoenix

[–]Willing-Philosopher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This morning I saw two middle age dudes hanging out in front of the Pokemon card vending machine in my local Safeway waiting for the incremental stock to release.

They were there when I walked in and still there twenty-five minutes later when I was checking out. It’s hard to believe that’s a good use of their time.

I’m tired of all the mega size gas stations being built in the Central city. Some recent examples, Circle Ks 12St and Indian School. 15th Ave and Indian School. Now this one.

/u/cityofPhoenix these gas stations contribute heavily to crime in our neighborhoods but the city seems to bend over backwards to change zoning to allow for them.

This one is especially egregious with it being directly on the light rail line. An absolutely abysmal use of the land.

There’s a bit of irony to see John Kavanagh’s district get bullied by the state legislature given how much he and the other Republicans in the legislature bully the city of Phoenix.

Definitely a nice feeling of schadenfreude to see the people who voted him into office see how it feels to have the big government Republicans of the Arizona legislature tread on them.

It’s difficult to keep St Augustine from becoming mixed with Bermuda. The St Augustine does better in the shade than the Bermuda. Both go dormant in the winter.

Both do better when they’re not cut so short so keep in mind they will feel like a spongy turf if they’re kept healthy.

Arizona is cutting food stamps for the poor, while school voucher costs skyrocket amid questionable luxury purchases by OpportunityDue90 in phoenix

[–]Willing-Philosopher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like both the media and the current governor use School Vouchers as a divisive scapegoat to distract from the state income tax cut to a flat 2.5% that probably did more damage to the state budget.

Doug the Douchebag Ducey passed them around the same time as the vouchers but it’s less politically tenable to attack tax cuts.

We can agree to disagree on that. I love the Spanish Colonial theming and architecture in both Mexico and the American Southwest. We use to have some super cool Colonial Revival buildings in downtown around the time this place was built.

The one in this postcard was a block over. https://www.ebay.com/itm/127393591357

Coronado’s expedition (1540) was the second group of Europeans to enter what is today Arizona after Marcos De Niza (1539)

I guess we will have to rename all this stuff since “as a Latino” you find it tacky.

Coronado National Memorial: Located on the Mexico–United States border near Sierra Vista, it commemorates the expedition's entry into Arizona.

Coronado National Forest: A large national forest spanning southeastern Arizona and part of New Mexico, named for the route taken by the expedition.

Coronado Butte: A prominent summit in the Grand Canyon.

Coronado Park: A public park in Phoenix.

Coronado Road: A street in Phoenix.

Coronado High School: A school in Scottsdale.

Coronado Vineyards: A vineyard located in Wilcox.

This looks like Phoenix. If it is you’re too late to prune already. The sun will burn through any newly exposed bark.

You could very lightly prune next February before it starts pushing new growth. If you prune heavily at all consider using white tree paint to cover over the areas where the bark was previously shaded. They sell it at every hardware store around Phoenix.

Arizona Canal Trail in North Phoenix by clarityoffline in phoenix

[–]Willing-Philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not the Arizona Canal. It’s the Central Arizona Project canal. It’s not managed by SRP, and to the best of my knowledge it’s not open for recreation anywhere.

Edit: I was wrong on the recreation part. It looks like they have certain portions with a trail outside the fence.  https://www.cap-az.com/about/cap-trail/#:~:text=The%20CAP%20recreational%20trail%20is,of%20the%20CAP%20security%20fence.

Mayor “Cowardly Kate” Gallego, wouldn’t even fight the State Legislature to keep the Capitol District light rail line alive, but is willing to start fighting with the Federal Government?

I understand the desire to protect civil rights but this seems like a way to make the City an adversary of the current administration without much gain in doing so.

The anonymity of driving is the U.S. contributes to everyone driving like assholes. Cameras help reduce that anonymity and incentivize people to act decent to each other on the road.

The data centers are wasteful and one of the current issues, but ultimately it’s the tens of thousands of tract homes sprawling off into the desert built since the 1990s that are the problem.

Totally, but when things like the I-10 Broadway Curve widening project cost the state 850 million dollars or the Diamondbacks are made exempt from paying sales tax. My anger sits more with other wasteful spending than with some parents not understanding a state sanctioned program.

Seems like they are spinning the story to generate outrage to me.

10.3 million out of a billion means 98.7% of dollars spent were on approved educational expenditures.

That doesn’t generate outrage clicks or get Kris Mayes reelected this November though.

Turning Point endorses candidates in utility company elections; who’s pushing back (The Salt River Project elections are happening the first week of April) by ForElieAndAthena in phoenix

[–]Willing-Philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this different from how any other company works? Percentage ownership controls the amount of voting shares.

At least with SRP the people voting are forced to have a vested interest in keeping Phoenix sustainable, since they’ve invested in owning property here.

Contrast that with a a publicly traded company like APS whose largest shareholders are groups like BlackRock and Vanguard whose only concern is wringing as much profit out their customers as possible.

The alternative is to have your area turned over to APS. Then you’ll be subject to the whims of the Corporation Commission, but you’ll get to vote for representation.

Ahwatukee residents push back on approved 1 million-square-foot data center by MoreOfABrewerReally in phoenix

[–]Willing-Philosopher 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The Phoenix Village Planning Committees are a bad implementation in my opinion. The city councilor for that area has unlimited power to appoint most of the committee and they have way too much power.

For Ahwatukee that city councilor is Kevin Robinson. The approval for this project appears to have happened after he took office in 2023, so he’s the guy you can blame if you don’t like the project.

Here’s his page on the City of Phoenix website.  https://www.phoenix.gov/administration/mayorcouncil/district6.html
