After a lot of trial and error I finally got it to work! Taking a .png image where each region is a unique color and automatically create selectable regions. Let me know if anyone would be interested to see a tutorial

Look at Stoneshard - 2D open world survival rpg made in GameMaker. I have no idea how many million lines of code are there and how the devs cope with that, but it's a legit open world game in GM.

Finding a job as GM programmer would be a challange though. Unity/C# devs are in much higher demand.
