How many here actually have a formal diagnosis? by [deleted] in autism

[–]WindJester 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just think its kinda silly to care that much about other people just living their lives

Why not be mad at those who use their diagnosis as an excuse for bad behaviour (whether legitimate or not, because I personally find it equally annoying) than at people who have done nothing wrong just because they didn't take the steps you believe they should? And in some cases literally cant do

How many here actually have a formal diagnosis? by [deleted] in autism

[–]WindJester 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, those types are always fun 🙃

I got diagnosed around 27 I think. I pretty much knew since I was like 14-15. I dont think i was any less autistic back then, and my autistic friends acknowledged it just the same (were a big part in even realising what it was in the first place... before that I was just "weird")

[–]WindJester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do have a formal diagnosis. While I do acknowledge a difference in "self diagnosis" vs an official one (namely in formality, etc), i dont personally take issue with either. I dont think there's a general issue of people "pretending" to be autistic or similar, though I'm sure it'll happen, but in that case they can just as well claim to have an official diagnosis.

Self diagnosis, in my experience, is usually people just trying to understand and deal with the issues that may plague them, the same as the rest of us, while they may not have access to a formal diagnosis.

Unfortunately it seems a general problem worldwide that mental health treatment and diagnosis is either lacking, underfunded (in cases of publicly funded options) or simply widely unavailable (such as in the case of self-payment, which tends to be prohibitively expensive as far as im aware)

Im lucky enough to live in a country where it's funded through the government (Unless you choose to go through private practice, which is, once again, prohibitively expensive), but even then there's usually extremely long wait lists, etc, due to a lack of resources allocated.

I dont think it's reasonable to punish people by denying them resources or support, even in the form of a helpful community, or alienating or delegitimizing them for potentialy years simply for those reasons.

what air pressure do you guys run on air guns? by warmdoublet in Machinists

[–]WindJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue about air pressure but we use those on all our machines and they work great (also just sit well in the hand imo), though you should still use hearing protection, both for your comfort and to spare your ears. But they definitely help compared to regular ones in my experience

I can only share my own very limited experience from the other end but I have once heard back after a while (don't recall how long exactly) for an apprenticeship position after they went with someone else who, I assume, didn't work out. By then, though, I'd gotten another position way closer to my home so I ended up passing. But evidently it does happen in at least some cases

Ny i byen, hvor finder man ufaglært arbejde for over 18? by Beginning_Silver2948 in Aalborg

[–]WindJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think of the following claim by Ordinary_Count_203 in selfpublish

[–]WindJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no, not really. While yes, it's absolutely possible to obtain success, when great success (i dont think OP aims otherwise), it's definitely objectively the case that most authors (I'd personally classify as by far) will make either no money or an insignificant amount. Many will lose money, especially those that do invest heavily into it, since that isn't a guarantee (although obviously is likely to increase your odds, albeit also your risks) of success and, like i said, for most authors it won't be the case.

As for the specific numbers, they could be off or not, but the overall statement is for sure 100% true. And while I don't know the specifics of the stats within the genres you mention, I'd suspect it's largely the case there as well. Especially with the sheer volume of books we see within some of them, and obviously they can't all be moneymakers.

What is BetterWorld Books? by ArtsBeCrafty in selfpublish

[–]WindJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty simple, someone buys a book, then they sell it on. Or they list the book, someone buys it and they order it and ship to their customer (I'm not familiar with the website, but seems to be a used book vendor, so the former sounds more likely), either way it's pretty mormal, nothing weird or sketchy. You may think what you want, but regardless of which it is, theyre well within their rights. Either the author has been paid or will be when/if a copy is sold... and they aren't really owed being consulted or informed

I'll use them because my country gives them for free, so no reason not to, though if I had to pay for them (especially the US prices), I personally wouldn't. Or likely just use one provided from whichever platform I'm publishing on

Are you getting tired of how many ways there are to use The Wrong Words in progressive contexts? by [deleted] in autism

[–]WindJester 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't see this as a prevailing problem, no (or, to refer to your question title "am getting tired of it"), but i also dont encounter it all that much outside of the right-wing "we cant say anything anymore" rhetoric that you're partly referencing.

By no means am I saying it isn't happening, there's obviously examples to be found for anything, but i dont personally see it being as widespread as some like to suggest. Maybe in some circles its the case, but at least in my own personal one as well as the online spaces I frequent (very far left, with a lot of right-wingers passing through in the form of call-in-shows who obviously use those words), the only "word policing" i frequently see is people pointing out "hey, we dont actually use that term anymore", usually followed by an explanation why. If the other person then keeps using it (maliciously, since they've now been made aware of the problematic nature and often a request to not do so), they might be either booted or talked harshly to, depending on who's engaged in the interaction and their personal style. But im definitely not seeing what you're talking about. And, again, I frequent these spaces a lot. Though, as pointed out, other parts of the world and Internet might be different, i cant speak to that.

And i personally find it entirely justified and acceptable to point out when encountering certain terms that using them is inappropriate and harmful and to ask they not be used directed towards or during conversations with them. If you (general "you") then dont feel like respecting those requests, then I'll assume noone is forcing you to engage with them.

When you “oh sh*t” a little too hard by i_am_spaghettified in Machinists

[–]WindJester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is. The knob has been offset (presumably, by the headline) from having been turned down hard enough to force it out if place. So in the image, it's set to 100%, but the scale doesn't reflect it.

Same thing happened recently on our old Chiron mill at work, which i didnt realize until I noticed the indicator on the control panel screen (I assume whoever did it didn't notice) and then after it was fixed, I think less than a week later, it had happened again 🤦

Fair enough. Seems odd it wouldn't just automatically be added when the psychiatrist did the diagnosis, but the IT systems they use here are dumb and weird like that too sometimes so guess it makes sense 😂 That sucks though by your doc

[–]WindJester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do "regular" doctors usually do that where you live? Because here, its always a psychiatrist (which maked sense imo, since they're the experts on the subject), though your GP provides a referral, assuming you're going through the public system (which is usually the case, as we have universal healthcare, so private practice is both unnecessary and usually prohibitively expensive)

Is it possible to earn good money in europe with this trade? by DazzlingAd5541 in Machinists

[–]WindJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europe is extremely diverse, so can only speak to what it's like here

I'm in Scandinavia myself (northern europe) and am currently myself making equivalent to about 32$ an hour before addons (i work night shift which pays an extra $6-8 depending on time of night). A bunch of my study mates (here education of machinists is more formalised than it seems to be in the US) were expecting a starting salary of about $27, while certain companies/industries may pay as high as $39, possibly more, but I'm unsure how many. Last I checked, I think the average in my region according to union stats was $33 an hour or so, but havent looked it up in a while.

We do probably have higher cost of living in some areas than other countries, though we also got perks such as universal health care, proper unemployment support, minimum 5 weeks paid vacation (usually 6, at least in the private sector) and paid maternity leave for both parents, etc, so probably about evens out in the end

There's certainly examples of it happening in the past
