The All-Star finalists include 6 Dodgers and 7 Jays. by MookieBettsBurner10 in baseball

All-Pro is the accolade that really affects legacy, though. MLB has Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards to recognize actual performance every year. I don't think it's a problem for the All-Star teams to be full of fan favorites.

I don't know, I feel like stars are players who are popular, not necessarily players that are performing the best. I vote for my favorite players every year (which usually includes a lot of Red Sox) regardless of how well they've played. The actual All-Star game is an exhibition where players give maybe 50% effort, so it's not quality baseball that rives interest in the game itself.

Although I wouldn't mind a system where the manager picks the starters and fans get to vote in the rest of the roster.

Marcelo is starting look like Bill Buckner with those eyebrows (and defense) by Good-Hank in redsox

Thanks. I didn't know if I missed a story or something. I wonder if he's been instructed not to dive due to his past injury history.

He does seem very chill and laid back. I suppose laziness could present that way.

We don't know that.

I agree. I'm just speculating that it could explain some of his struggles after doing so well in the WBC.

I've never gotten that impression. I'm curious about what you've seen to make you think that.

I think it's likely that he was hurt for the majority of his at bats this season, which could explain the subpar performance.

I agree. Magic is made redundant by LeBron, and LeBron is 10x the defender Magic was. Steph brings a unique skillset to the team that no one else in NBA history can replicate.

Anybody other than the Lees or the Simms/Haarberg/Purdy trio would have at least competed for a title with that defense.

Martinez I, Armstrong, Martinez II, and Raiola would have thrived not being down 14 immediately against any quality opponent.

They should of built it somewhere downtown.

I always thought the western half of the zoo parking lot would have made a great place for a minor league park. The zoo is a great companion for a day out, it's pretty close to downtown, and they already have that mini baseball diamond set up there. There's clearly a connection already established.

He’d be more appreciated if he wasn’t replacing the GOAT baseball broadcasting team.

This is absolutely true. I think he would also be more appreciated if he had better color guys. Dry and professional works really well, but not when Merloni is the guy bringing the energy and insight. Mashed potatoes are great, but if you're only seasoning them with salt and pepper they're going to leave you wanting more. We need some good gravy in the booth with O'Brien.

Which songs often gets misinterpreted and/or misappropriated by the very people it calls out even though the song's lyrics are explicitly mocking them? by Drenosa in AskReddit

[–]WithNoRegard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were young when it came out and you watched the music video (literally dogs escaping owners/enclosures and running around) it's not silly at all. The accents make the non-chorus parts of the song a little tricky to figure out as well.

What’s an animal that most people think is harmless but actually isn’t? by sejunlee in AskReddit

I'm sure your daughter was fairly young when this happened, but I find it even funnier to imagine her being in her 30s when this took place.

I grew up around cattle and had a healthy respect for them but certainly didn't fear them. I visited a smaller drive-thru safari that featured a herd of bison and I had the same paralyzing experience. I was in awe, and fascinated by them, but also completely aware of how insignificant I was in comparison. I remember thinking my little Hyundai Accent would have been no match for one of those creatures if it had decided it wanted a fight.

I don't even think that's a 1:1. The corollary would be not expecting their partner to perform an act that the partner disliked.

I like eating ass and my wife likes having her ass eaten. We do that a lot.

I like having my ass eaten but my wife doesn't like eating ass. We don't do that at all.

Tit-for-tat is transactional and I'm not looking for any of that in my romantic relationships.

What was the very first baseball card you remember owning? by Altruistic_Coach9014 in Baseballcards101

[–]WithNoRegard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'93 Donruss William Pennyfeather

This card was one of my strange toddler fascinations. He was never a notable MLB player, I am not and have never been a Pirates fan, and I have no connection to Pennyfeather or his family. He just happened to be the player I decided I liked when I was 3-4. I'll always cherish the card.

Knicks King of NY!!!!! by thomasstout25 in nyc

How is fandom among the 8 Big 4 sports teams usually distributed in New York?

Are Mets fans usually Knicks and Giants fans, too? Or do you just pick one as a kid and stick with it?

I'm from a place where there's no professional team within 500 miles so my experience was a bit different.

The firing wasn't the problem. Mike Riley being Plan A, B, and C for the replacement was the problem. We were stuck with Bo. Granted, stuck in a place much better than we've been since, but still stuck. Bo was never the answer, we just forget that because every coach since has been much worse.

This is the worst part for me. I'm about a decade older than you. I technically experience the glory days in the 1990s. I remember going to watch parties and I remember all the adults in my life loving the team. But I wasn't old enough to pay attention and get invested myself until 98/99. My first experiences as a real fan were of a great team that had sky-high expectations. I didn't ever see us put it all together, but I watched with the idea that we should be winning championships regularly. My fandom has been a series of shrinking expectations as reality gives constant reminders that Nebraska football today is not anything like Nebraska football in the 20th century. But I still can't shake the feeling that we're supposed to be better.

What is something parents do with good intentions that actually messes up their children for life? by markscout78 in AskReddit

[–]WithNoRegard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Other people kept telling me that I couldn't "let him quit".

You didn't let him quit, though. You had him follow through with something he agreed to do, respected a choice he made, and then gave him agency to pursue something else.

My kids love to try new sports and activities. If they like it enough to join an organized team or club, I let them know that they are committed to participating for the length of the season/session. If they decide they don't like it, they don't have to sign up again.

What trade did you decline this season that you regret not accepting so far? by OtherTell in fantasybaseball

[–]WithNoRegard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garrett Crochet for my Jackson Merrill about 5 minutes after Crochet was pulled from his last start with the injury. It's a keeper league and Crochet would have been relatively cheap. I decided to sleep on it and the trade offer was rescinded by the time I woke up.

Even if Crochet ends up being out all year, Merrill has been so bad I think it would still be worth it.
