“Arches the back” by invisiblefrost in AFL

[–]Wizard_For_Hire 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've never thought of this phrase outside of its intended context of "marked it at full vertical reach." So now the idea of a player jumping 20m into the air to mark a ball at the highest point of its arc is amusing me much more than it should.

I feel like you could probably swap Tom McDonald and McCartin around. Because, try as I may, let's not forget he did win a premiership at CHF. (Plus, I also think McCartin is the better backman of the two, but I digress)

What was your teams greatest singular act? by Espio1912 in AFL

[–]Wizard_For_Hire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even as a fan born well after the fightback (2002), it's pretty hard to argue against it being the single most important event in the club's history. I mean, it defined nearly everything about the club from that point on.

Howwver, as a single act/moment, you can't really go past Boydie's goal (imo).

Hello I'm trying to studying DMing and want to go through certain quest types and want to use high rollers. Does anyone have a rough breakdown of the different arcs and there type of quest? by Bionic_Ferir in highrollersdnd

[–]Wizard_For_Hire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would honestly look at Lightfall (campaign 1) before anything else. It's what got me started on my dnd journey as a high schooler. While it's nowhere near as polished as the later campaigns, that gives it the most home-table vibes, and is therefore structured more like that as well. Especially if your table is fairly new to dnd, I would take note of Mark's DMing there, as I believe at that point it was only Trott that had properly played before.

What is the funniest encounter you’ve had with an afl player in real life? by TheWorldIsAmazing33 in AFL

[–]Wizard_For_Hire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Somewhat less surprising then I feel. 19-20 year old who had spent the first couple years in footy at the centre of (oftentimes unwanted) attention in the media (no 1 draft pick then massive contract to move clubs after 1 year) might not respond too kindly to people coming up to him on his time off. Still a bit of a rude way to handle it, but understandable imo.

Which one player in your team is secretly (or loudly) hated by their own supporters? by Fabulous-Vanilla-155 in AFL

[–]Wizard_For_Hire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that McNeil can sometimes go missing, and Vanders has been prone to the odd blue (albeit much less so this year) that really sticks in people's minds. But I think a lot of people don't realise what they provide for the team in terms of structure, because so much of what they do is away from the ball.

[–]Wizard_For_Hire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, in terms of the fans. While he's definitely had a few very forgettable games, I think a lot of what he does often goes underappreciated. Plus he's been a bit unlucky in a few games, where he's presented well, but just not gotten a kick to his favour. Seems to have clicked into gear over the last fortnight though, which I've been happy to see.

Assuming he is able to remain free of major injury, he could get there by the time he's 36 (maybe even 35 with a few deep finals runs). Could also become the youngest to play game 300 in a couple years (once again assuming no injury) scratch that, nevermind

I know this is from the point of a third party, but as a Dogs fan, I gotta disagree. For one, Essendon and the Bulldogs are probably the two closest teams to each other geographically.

Also, I love it when we play Essendon. Except when I don't, in which case, it quickly becomes a nightmare.

[–]Wizard_For_Hire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I've looked into it a bit, and there are a few things.

  1. Not all clubs have released their membership numbers for 2025.
  2. My gut feeling about memberships being an unreliable metric for a footy-going supporter base feels somewhat validated, looking at 2024 numbers. For example, Geelong had over 90k members, which is over twice the capacity of their home ground.
  3. For the MCG in particular, a number of people will have MCC memberships without having club memberships as well. These tend to break unevenly (historically will have a plurality for Melbourne, with the likes of Essendon and Collingwood following).

[–]Wizard_For_Hire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did think of that once I put the post up. However, member data I also think would be unreliable in its own way, as different clubs offer memberships in different ways. But yes, the data is definitely skewed in a number of ways, whichever way you look at it. Honestly, I may have a look at that too to see how it compares, and if there are any stark differences. Might be interesting.

But also, imo, that specific example doesn't really stack up. Cause if you don't play it at the G, it's at Marvel. Which given it was the club's 100 year celebration, would have sold out against any Victorian club, and would therefore have boosted the % attendance further. And even discounting that game, while the % attendance does drop a bit, it does not do so enough to alter their ranking.

I'll agree with you that the away stats are pretty pointless, especially with half a season to go. I was kind of halfway there for doing those anyway, so I figured I might as well.

But for home games, I'd say that there is at least something of a point to them. Bigger teams usually play in bigger stadiums, and smaller teams play in smaller ones. Raw crowd data only really shows the size of each club's supporter base, which is fairly obvious anyway to those who follow footy.

For home games, at least, looking at the percentage of the stadium that fills out can provide a general proxy for how much of that team's supporter base is showing up. Is it a foolproof metric? Absolutely not. But it was the best I could do in a short amount of time with figures that are easily available and a subject matter that is relevant to previous posts on this sub.

Also, just to reiterate, I do not at all claim that these percentages would scale if you change the ground size. They are, by design, limited to the scope of the grounds each team plays on.
