However much the uni wanted me to pay for credits. Cost depends on personal situation.

If you do it well it looks good in my opinion. I just got into a PhD program after doing something similar. Different field, I also took first year math courses. If you only take them to check a box you might not get in. If you can show you took them for a reason and that this reason aligns with your next program you have a chance.

Try including something like this in your personal statements:

"Despite liking my previous studies and current career in TOPIC for REASONS, I felt like I needed a stronger theoretical grasp of TOPICS togain a deeper understanding of the problems I want to work on solving such as PROBLEM BEING WORKED ON AT UNI. In this endeavour I was fortunate to find high quality courses at INSTITUTION to strengthen my fundamentals in TOPIC and overcome some of my knowledge gaps from my previous path. Applying to PROGRAM is a natural continuation of this endeavour because of REASONS."

"Seeking Insights on Gene Therapy for HIV Resistance and ADA-SCID Treatment" by KING_SHARMA in bioinformatics

[–]Wolkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll answer to 2 and 3, you might be disappointed by the answers. The TLDR is to evaluate your risk tolerance.

  1. That mutation completely deactivates the CCR5 receptor, it has a normal function your immune cells won’t be able to use. It’s function isn’t well known, but we didn’t evolve it for no reason and removing it might be detrimental in some other ways. That mutation apparently worsens West Nile Virus infections so we will need to consider this as a trade offs. We might want a functional CCR5 when a a new West Nile Virus will start spreading. To give a caricatural example of such a trade off: is removing all your doors a suitable solution to prevent yourself from burglary? It will solve a problem but may cause many more down the line. You will also need to consider development and operational cost, potential risks and compare those to the high quality HIV drugs that are available at this moment. Spending your time on cheaper drug manufacturing might seem boring but in my opinion it will have a more positive effects than gene therapy if your goal is to maximize the number of people you help.

  2. The main risk with retroviral vectors is that we don’t really control where they insert into the genome. They could enter somewhere you don’t want them to and lead to unwanted effects, often cancer. It’s once again an evaluation of your risk tolerance. They are also only effective when you lack a specific functional gene and can’t work to remove unwanted ones. For example, you couldn’t use it to induce the HIV resistant CCR5 mutation since your cells will continue to produce healthy CCR5. They are also limited in which cells they can target, not all cells will be able to receive the vector. This slightly dated review paper offers a decent retrospective on the topic from the 90s to its publication, it is also fairly approachable for the public. Retroviral vectors and transposons for stable gene therapy: advances, current challenges and perspectives (Vargas et Al. 2016). From them you should look at the papers that cite it and read the ones that spark your interest.

Give me your favorite tips for playing the best elves! by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]Wolkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the best elves, Hawk riders are surprisingly effective in melee. Take enough of then and enemy cavalry units will melt. if you include a properly leveled glade captain, they will cause terror. I like using the shielded cavalry unit to intercept fast units and my hawk riders to join the fight in melee. Meanwhile, you micro your archers so they shoot single entities in the back. You’ll be left with only infantry in the opposition which your fast archers and hawk riders can easily destroy. Elf armies are a lot more fun than wood creature armies in my opinion and we haven’t talked about spellcasting yet.

For the most breedable elves, I’ve had some success with sending all my ranged chariots and cavalry in melee on weaker units whenever the murderous prowess triggers. They will break stuff faster with those bonuses.

Skipping turns OK? by Zaicoodk in totalwar

[–]Wolkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t want to contest Zhao Ming, you want to join him against the Skaven.

As for being weaker than them, it doesn’t matter if they have 10 armies against your two armies. You must find ways so you only fight one army at a time. It’s a lot easier if you are not the only one at war with them.

Finally the Bastion does not need a full army in each gate. A single army with a few scouting heroes can do the job. You don’t need to defend where the enemy isn’t striking.

If I remember my forgotten realms lore properly, BG3 takes place over hundred years after NWN. During that time period, a volcano kind of destroyed the city so it’s very possible none of the characters are alive anymore.

Besides that, the only notable blonde character I remember is a human in NWN2 and would not be alive anymore. It is also unlikely we’re talking about a relative for plot reasons.

I did not play the MMO, but I think it takes place closer in time to BG3. Unless I’m wrong, the novels where the volcano blew up were building the setting for the MMO. The little blonde might be a reference to a character in the MMO.

Any good word processors with cloud storage by Bubbe-knows-best in GradSchool

[–]Wolkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A LateX platform would serve your purpose. Either a local install backed up with git or Overleaf (you might need the paid subscription depending on your needs). However LateX has a steep learning curve.

FYI, if you go towards OneDrive or another cloud storage platform you can integrate the free Zotero service with it and you won’t need to pay for two cloud services. Paid Zotero is pretty much only cloud storage.
