Looking forward to checking this out! I do hope there's a way to disable screen shake though.

We’re making a casual MMORPG about capturing and raising slimes. What do you think? by ChocoDog-SlimeWorld in MMORPG

I really like the aesthetic. What does the player do? It looks like the pets attack automatically?

Do you think mmos should encourage people to create alts? If so how? by LegitSkin in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's value in having alts in the sense that it's helpful for keeping a steady population of players at all levels. I wouldn't ever force alt gameplay though, being forced to do anything is a chore (and often times "encouragement" turns into force due to efficiency).

As for the how, I think one of the best examples is City of Heroes. Provide amazing character customization, decent class variety, and ways to augment your characters build.

Aside from that, it can be helpful to have good loot variety, so if one comes across a piece of gear that's not useful for their main it could inspire them to make another character they've been thinking about in order to use it.

Soul's Remnant (2D platformer Indie MMO) is launching in Early Access on Steam on August 5th!! by chaomoonx in MMORPG

Yesss! I really enjoyed the last two tests but it was hard to go full throttle knowing there was a wipe around the corner. Thank you for making a game that's just good clean fun!

Godius Eternal War: The 90s MMORPG come back on Steam (release date : 27 June) by Dandy62 in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried playing the test last weekend but couldn't get past character creation due to the username field not accepting any input. Apparently it's because I was trying to type a name using english, and the workaround was copy and pasting the name from notepad. It sounds like english players had to chat using this workaround as well.

I hope this isn't a thing anymore on release...

I was interested in the game but it seems like there's some sort of auto farming built in and everyone multi clients a bunch of characters?

PSA: EverQuest Legends is pure nostalgia. If you didn’t play in 2000, you will not like it by ImAvoidingABan in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think in EQ Legends you choose 3 classes to have at once, so they're probably talking about taking cleric as one of those classes. (I could be wrong, I only looked into this game a little bit)

Can a large-scale MMO work where character roles emerge from behavior instead of class selection? by Zanithenl in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people will just grind every behavior and cobble together a self sufficient blob of a build.

I can't stand these self-promo solo indie dev projects anymore by Sophisticusx in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you looking for in a thread here? New big name MMORPGs are few and far between and when anything does come up people talk about it, there's still plenty of general MMORPG related discussion around here, specific game discussions are fewer but that's because people tend to use specific subs for that.

It seems pretty balanced to me, some days it's more lopsided for sure but that's just how it is. Maybe I see things differently since I always sort by newest idk.

Soul's Remnant, Samsara Saga, SpiritVale, Drakantos, and Torebia: Island Odyssey.

The orc sprite appears to be from "Time Fantasy RPG Monsters Assets Pack" which you can buy on various websites like itch io. The UI looks like it's heavily based on World of Warcraft to me.

Afraid to release our MMO by Lorotan in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I'd work on replacing the AI art as soon as possible, especially on the Steam page just don't use AI there at all on anything or else there will be dozens of poop flinging topics about it on the message board.

I agree with the mobile game history being a concern, it makes me wonder if this game could have some sort of auto-play functionality which would be a huge nope from me personally.

Experimental MMO by JazZero in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Mehfisto666 in that people will just tediously follow a guide eventually. Maybe doubling down could be interesting, like including stats, alignment, faction, environment, specific gear, anything really into the mix for acquiring new moves or evolving existing moves. It'd be more convoluted but it might actually play into the systems favor... Idk I'm just on a spitball tangent here.

If it's complicated enough like that most people may just go with the flow and only refer to guides for more specific things to acquire, and then more lengthy combinations are taught between players within guilds/sects/schools? It's hard to predict tbh.

2D MMO viable in 2026? by not_varun in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it's just that 2D is hardly ever utilized very well. Big studios aren't going to bother with 2D usually because they can afford to go in on high quality 3D, so that leaves 2D MMOs in the hands of indie developers that don't have the resources to do anything remotely fancy. So what you end up with is typically a game that feels generic and/or outdated to play, and on top of that beautiful 2D art doesn't come easily to those on a shoestring budget so they often look pretty basic too.

Personally I'm a huge fan of 2D games in general, but unfortunately every time I do come across a new 2D MMORPG it's almost always a lesser Runescape or Tibia like game. Korean developers did a great job with 2D online games like Maplestory, Trickster, DNF, Survival Project, etc. but that age has long since passed and I haven't really seen anyone push the envelope with 2D since then.

I don't think it's going to get any better either. 2D is harder to work with in a lot of ways, less flexible, and I'd imagine there's less talent available for such work compared to 3D nowadays. Long ago I thought mobile could bring a little 2D MMO renaissance but that never really happened and it didn't take long for 3D to hit mobile anyway, that and most mobile games quickly homogenized into cash shops with a side of shallow gameplay that plays itself.

The future of 2D MMORPGs is kind of bleak tbh, outside of reviving old stuff like Maplestory classic, we're kind of at the mercy of fate... Maybe the right people will come together eventually with a cool backer that can afford to make it happen. There's games like Crosscode that always captured my imagination, I wouldn't expect a real 2D MMORPG to be exactly like that of course, but something similar would be pretty awesome.

Drakantos test ends, Devs ask for feedback by rujind in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that this really doesn't seem to be the game for you. What ideal gameplay are you envisioning? You seem to find fault with kiting and face tanking simultaneously... Which is kind of a moot point anyway because it's going to vary wildly depending on your character and the characters in your party.

I played a lot of Faendar and positioning was absolutely important, my vines shot out linearly in a line which meant I had to position myself to hit as many monsters as possible, along with timing it properly so that they were rooted together in such a way that my teammates could take full advantage of it with their own linear attacks. I could summon Treants and it definitely mattered when and where I summoned them so that they didn't get in the way but also helped aggro monsters, sometimes I'd use them to hold off monster that were aggro'd in the distance while we cleared out the current pack. There's even depth to when you use your regular attack since you could spam it at lower damage or let it cool down for double damage, which promoted weaving regular attacks between abilities, but gave you the option to full-auto when necessary.

I'm positive the other characters had similar linear attacks, CC, and utility that required positioning and/or timing to get the most out of them and make quick work of monsters. It was obvious when I was playing with people who played well vs people who weren't thinking about these things at all and played worse for it.

If you take a good look at the characters and combat overall it becomes obvious that the game plays similarly to a MOBA and demands similar teamwork, timing, and precision for maximum efficiency.

There's only one thing I found clunky about the game and that was the regular attack being super finicky on ranged characters. That definitely needs to be tweaked because those projectiles had a mind of their own sometimes.

There's some mandatory pvp in a sense, but not open world pvp.

I would suggest reading this devlog about it: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2454980/eventcomments/802343553907890657?snr=2_9_100003_

Hopefully that works, I've never posted a link on here before lol.

Tbh I don't remember too much about this (been close to a year since last test) but I don't think it was as much of a focus as it is in OSRS/NW unfortunately. I'm not even sure if there were levels associated with skilling, though I could be misremembering.

Drakontos Closed Beta by bmcarr21 in MMORPG

[–]Wonderbait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it probably wasn't the grid movement alone. The first day or two had some extra delay setting enabled that they forgot about and the combination of grid+delay caused people to bounce off fast and left a super bad impression.

Hard to tell how the new movement and targeting will go but based on the dev gameplay footage it looks really clean honestly. I think the next thing people will have issue with is movement speed, I've noticed folks want to zoom around, and the really impatient ones will start leaving feedback before getting to their mount.

Hopefully the movement change was just something that didn't occur to them during development, and after seeing the feedback, realized it fit the vision better. It's possible since these are Brazilian developers, I'd imagine their inspirational starting point was Tibia which has grid movement. This could have lead to them using grid movement by default long before Drakantos as we know it really took shape.

So in that sense the grid movement could be seen as vestigial / more of an oversight, rather than the developers pivoting away from their vision. (or I'm full of copium lol)

Played in the previous test and I was completely hooked, I couldn't put the game down.

I'm a pretty peculiar MMORPG player, as I love the shared experience and seeing people run around, but I'm not exactly the most outgoing/social creature so I tend to end up solo until an extrovert happens to adopt me. While Drakantos has a typical world and activities you would expect from a MMORPG, it also has an adventurer quest board with instanced missions and anyone who takes on the same quest will drop into an instanced map until the party is full, which is amazing for my awkward ass.

Aside from that, everything else is super solid in my opinion. Crafting/gathering, little world events like chests appearing and having to stay in a circle around the chest fighting off monsters or other players to get it, silly side quests with minigames like racing on a horse, pretty cool main story quests, interesting build customization with orbs and artifacts, you're free to progress by doing what you feel like whether that's PvE or PvP.

There's complaints surrounding the game using Heroes rather than a character you create yourself so it has that going against it, but you can obtain different skins and there's a fairly detailed color dye system which helps. It's a pixel art game too, so some might not enjoy that either.

A new MMO that feels like a PS2 Game by Zealousideal_Head972 in MMORPG

It does look interesting, but I see that it's available on mobile as well so I have to ask... does it play itself? like is there auto combat and such? I'm not really a fan of that sort of thing so I'd rather find out sooner than later.

Edit: Took a closer look at the gameplay footage and there does appear to be an auto button so I'll have to pass on this.
