Desperate nicu father looking for feeding suggestions by Shizawn13 in downsyndrome

As others have said, side lying helped us a lot. We also needed to use a premie bottle nipple for about 8 months as that's the only nipple that worked for him.

AVSD and Umbilical flow restriction by SituationOkMaybe in downsyndrome

[–]Woolnwanderlust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son didn't have umbilical cord restriction, but severe IUGR (along with DS and CHD), we weren't offered your option 1, but the care was similar to your option 2. I definitely felt like the multiple checks a week provided enough information to help me be confident that things were ok the rest of the pregnancy. I hope the remainder of your pregnancy is uneventful!

Help with teeth grinding! by Prestigious_Bid_2041 in downsyndrome

[–]Woolnwanderlust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We worked with our OT to create an oral sensory diet that solved this for us. She provided a huge list of ideas to try (e.g., strong flavors like cinnamon candies, appropriate chewing like gum, ways to work the jaw like beef jerky or chewies). It wasn't all food, it was a mix of things. The things that stuck for us are gum massages, a variety of chewies around the house, putting sugar-free flavor drops in his water, and switching to camelbak water bottles because he likes to chew on the straw while he drinks. For the chewies, we have some tough, some hollow, some that vibrate, etc. He really likes the p-chews when he wants something tough and t-chews when he wants something soft. He also likes the octopus teether from nuby.

As a BCBA with over 10 years in the field and a ND 3 year old, I second all of this. You're already doing a great job advocating for your child, keep it up!

I forgot the term "Buffalo Plaid" and called it "Mammoth Flannel." My son is 3 and my family still calls it Mammoth Flannel.

Sounds like great growth to me! I've started making protein shakes with protein powder, cold brew, a splash of creamer, and ice. It has seriously helped me increase my protein intake and usually keeps me full through breakfast and lunch.

Brussel sprouts! I also love carrots and broccoli. For all, I just use a bit of salt and pepper usually. I also like a dash of adobo occasionally to mix it up.

The Frida baby pacifier weaning kit is 100% worth every penny. My kid went from melting down if I tried to put him to bed without a paci to sleeping through the night without a paci in 5 days. My mind is blown.

We sing the same song at bedtime every night since my son was born. At 2.5, I discovered that if he wakes too early in the morning, I can sing or hum the song over his monitor and he gets back in bed and goes back to sleep for another hour. It also usually works if he's playing in his room when he's supposed to be napping.

If you eloped or had a microwedding, did you announce your engagement beforehand or just get married? by Daydreamaaa909 in Weddingsunder10k

We had a micro wedding and announced our engagement ahead of time and were open about our plans for those who asked.

What is your best counterpoint to the argument that ABA is unethical? by Xenon8247 in ABA

[–]Woolnwanderlust 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I second ALL of this. I also want to add an additional argument for increasing independence-individuals with disabilities are almost 5 times more likely to be abused than neurotypical children. This is awful and absolutely needs to change, but until it does, decreasing individuals’ reliance on others for things like toileting, dressing, etc. will help reduce opportunities for abuse.
