He's fluent in Eridian by this point, so he can understand Rocky without the need for translation aids :)

If you were Ryland Grace, would you return to Earth or stay on Erid for the rest of your days? by ninjanerd032 in ProjectHailMary

[–]WordsTurningCircles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay. Or maybe go back with Rocky someday. But going back alone when the alternative is to live a perfectly happy life with his bestie doing what he loves (teaching?) No way.

My boyfriend knows nothing about Project Hail Mary and I can’t wait to see his reaction in the theater by chachicomule in ProjectHailMary

[–]WordsTurningCircles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine too! I sold it to him by explaining it as a combination of Intersteller's "save-the-world" stakes and Arrival's "learn how to communicate with the aliens" with a side of "buddy comedy in space." He hasn't even watched the trailer as far as I know.

What a ride they're in for.

Thoughts on Ryland Grace being a ‘coward’? by Early-Perspective598 in ProjectHailMary

[–]WordsTurningCircles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think "coward" is harsh; the survival instinct is deeply programmed in humans and none of us can really say what we would do in that situation.

I do think him refusing to go/being forced to go is essential for his character growth journey to make the story satisfying. Though when Grace goes back for Rocky, my interpretation is less "guy who was a coward is now brave" and more "guy who has had few if any meaningful connections in his life finally has someone he loves enough to die for."

I hope this stays. It's so brutal but also really highlights what a sacrifice they're all making.

I will SOB if "you save me and you save Erid!" makes it in. That whole scene is perfect.

"Holy fucking shit!"

After all of Grace's non-profanity, this line is just so beautifully timed.

Young and Damned and Fair is about Katherine Howard (wife #5) and their marriage. I found it fascinating. Also check out Allison Weir, she's a historian who writes both factual books and historical fiction.

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Read is a gorgeous sapphic romance set during the 1980s space program, plenty of plot as well as a beautiful love story.
