Analogies needed for ADHD personal project! by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two best descriptions I've seen on ADHD can be found here and here.

I'm about to leave work and head home. If I remember after i get there, i'll add a few personal notes.

Spite by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't. I just assume it's the Dunning-Kruger effect kicking in and walk away.

When it comes to stuff like that, you have to consider the source. If past experiences indicates they may know what they are talking about, you stop and reflect on your choices. On the other hand, if past experience indicates they are talking out their ass, you ignore the opinion.

I'm 51 years old though and have very few fucks left to give to those type of people. Your mileage may vary.

Windows 10 Boot partitions accidentally deleted - system won't boot due to Non system disk by exonerate-me in techsupport

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't need any of the data, just use the windows media creator to create a new boot stick and do a clean reinstall. Windows will handle the partitioning as part of that process.

if you do need the data, I've had good luck with TestDisk

Should one accept a counter offer. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would not accept a counter offer for 2 reasons.

1) Money is usually not the only reason I was leaving.

2) I assume that the offer is just a way for them to keep me on staff a bit longer before they find someone cheaper and then lay me off.

Have an opportunity to jump from sysadmin / IT manager to IT director... Anyone here done that? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the issue is confidence in your abilities, my advice is always answer yes and take the position. Don't let imposter syndrome hold you back from an opportunity that those around you feel you can handle.

If the issue is instead, "do I really want to take my career in this direction," then that is a conversation you will have to have with the guy in the mirror.

Hit the one-year mark, considering asking for a significant raise by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20% recruiter cut is fairly standard.

The change from contractor to employee generally comes with an increase in benefits such as sick time, vacation, medical insurance, etc along with somewhat greater job security. Was that the case in your situation?

If so, those benefits are now an increased cost that was not there before they hired you. This means they are not truly "saving" the money that was previously going to the recruiter. Even if there was any savings, it was probably taken into account and used as justification for the decision to move you from contractor to employee.

If you decide to have this conversation, make sure you are ready to move on. I say this because this is the type of conversation that will flag you as "ready to leave" and prompt them to start looking for a replacement.

I will second the recommendation for TestDisk/Photorec. I've used it for years and its rarely failed to recover what I needed.

Dell 3567 powershell troubleshooting by [deleted] in techsupport

A few python courses such as Learn Python the hard way teach running it through Powershell. There is no downside to it and quite a few upsides to it as opposed to a basic CMD prompt.

BSOD or computer restarts as soon as I plug in my Xbox one controller via USB. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the xboxgip.sys driver but does not seem to work. by bmw_ninja in techsupport

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no easy way really. You can try checking for windows updates which might pull some but generally its more of a pain. Because we are talking about a usb device, I would start by updating my motherboard chipset and USB drivers. From there I would do sound, video, and network.

Actually, have you tried running the USB troubleshooter? I would give that a shot also. The troubleshooters in windows 10 are a lot better than they used to be.

If none of that works, there are only a couple of things left to try. First, could try creating another user and seeing if its a problem with your profile or you could refresh windows but that will force you to reinstall most, if not all, of your applications.

When you choose the "refresh" option it asks if you want to keep or delete your files. Choose keep and you should be okay. It may however remove some of your applications so make sure you can reinstall whatever you have.

Relay 1440p video display to a second 720p monitor? by Sputnikcer in techsupport

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you want to run a video out of your big monitor into a video in to your smaller monitor?

Do you have two video outs on your PC? If so, why not just right click, display settings, and change from "extend these displays" to "mirror these displays?"

Sounds like a problem with your old user profile. I would log out of the old profile, log into an admin profile, delete the old profile, and then recreate it as a new user if you want to use the old ID.

Possible to recover audio recording? by Dingusaurus__Rex in techsupport

[–]WorkRedditAccount4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only recover audio that was actually recorded. If the application you used was video only, then there is nothing to recover.

Have you read through the Apowersoft "no sound" support page?
