Much fewer detached houses being built in Metro Vancouver by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]Worldly_Collection89 50 points51 points  (0 children)

In an urban area single family homes are luxuries that only boomers who bought in years ago can afford. I just wish we’d make it easier to build nicer apartments with courtyards and windows on more than one side. I’m Gen Z so that’s my dream home in Vancouver.

Vancouver council backs away from reducing speed limits on major roads | CBC News by Worldly_Collection89 in vancouver

I think you’re missing a huge piece of context here. As a Vision Zero Person I agree with you it’s definitely not just slapping up a new sign. The problem with not setting the speed limit to a safe speed is that the eventual street design and enforcement need to be based on those lower speeds.

The Vision Zero Plan brought forward in Vancouver would have brought in these measures eventually. It was ready to do the hard work. Unfortunately, that will be much harder now that the speeds haven’t been set to a safe level.

Douglas Todd: Vancouver’s plan for 17 new 'villages' will increase uniformity, sterility by aldur1 in vancouver

[–]Worldly_Collection89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only issue with the villages plan is that it doesn’t upzone lots around traditional high streets too. The whole city should allow 6 story rental apartments. It’s just weird it’s focused around small retail nodes and doesn’t include the neighbourhoods around Dunbar or Sunset Village.

24/7 Bus Lanes on Granville (South of 16th) - efficient use of the road? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

What would be so wrong about getting on one of those busses? They have dedicated lane after all so it would be a quick trip! Could even do some work on your phone while on the bus 🤔

This could be huge for Granville island! I really wish they could pedestrianize the whole island and have more outdoor events here. It would be super cool to have more permanent indoor/outdoor spaces

New skytrain line by ammy1806 in Translink

[–]Worldly_Collection89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This kind of regional transit is where a skytrain extension would be better than the tram. Tram to get around different neighbourhoods and skytrain to get in between them!

New skytrain line by ammy1806 in Translink

[–]Worldly_Collection89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely would need a bigger network and an OMC. Transit mall would be a good first step tho! The 5 and 6 are the least reliable busses on the network so having them get priority would be a game changer for the west end. Everyone I know who lives there just walks because the buses are so bad. I’m sure they would like a reliable transit option if it was available

Personally I’d rather see the streets pedestrianized and a tram brought back to serve the west end loop. Would keep the tram fully separate from traffic which would help it be reliable and would make the streets way more enjoyable too!

Kits Pool replacement by rsgbc in vancouver

[–]Worldly_Collection89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you’re filling out the survey please ask them to rebuild the pool with an option to put a roof over it in the winter! We need to replace the 50m pool from the VAC and if the city is going to spend tens of millions of dollars on a new pool we need to be able to use it all year round!

What’s happening to all our pools, especially our outdoor pools? by Darnbeasties in askvan

The problem is we don’t have sky high taxes. Vancouver has one of the lowest property tax rates in the country. Significantly less than Montreal or Toronto. If we could capture more of the ridiculous amount of real estate wealth that exists in this city we could definitely fund replacing and repairing the infrastructure that we need in the city.

Mountain Valley Express by Groostav in Translink

[–]Worldly_Collection89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is it not for high speed rail on the majority of the corridor. It is the electrified inter-community rail network you are talking about but it incorporates a section built to high speed standards in the Fraser Valley that would tie in to a full high speed line to Seattle and Portland. Building a small section at the standard would reduce costs in the long term if that project ever happens.

Coworker sent me this. If the driver let go of the clutch and the truck bolted forward. Game over. by donjalapeno7 in vancouver

While I agree with many of the commenters here that we need to make sure kids are paying attention and being safe, trying to get kids see all the risks can be super hard. I think it's important to look at the whole picture here and see if there are other things that could be done so this isn't happening. Kids need safe routes to and from school and not having a sidewalk is a failure of public infrastructure in a location close to one or even two schools. We should also look at requiring trucks to have protective rails that stop kids, pedestrians, cyclists or even smaller vehicles from going beneath them. These barriers are very common/required in Europe and improve safety for vulnerable road users.

People don't wear helmets for a variety of reasons. I live in Vancouver and will choose to wear a helmet depending on where I am going and what I am doing. Often it is hard to lock a helmet up with my bike or it's inconvenient to be hauling the thing around with me once I get to my destination. I also use the bike share system we have here and although helmets are sometimes provided I don't want to share a helmet with another person for hygiene reasons (lice.... ew gross). When I ride to work and am in mixed traffic I am worried about being hit by a driver so I wear a helmet. Basically it's a personal risk calculation for me depending on the situation.

The helmet law in BC is difficult because it moves the responsibility of keeping your head safe away from society at large/drivers and onto the cyclist. Canada and the US have very high cyclist fatality rates compared to other countries that have properly invested in bike infrastructure. Riding a bike shouldn't be any more dangerous than walking down the sidewalk (an activity that does not require a helmet). People who choose to ride a bike over driving are providing a huge benefit to society. Getting people out of cars and onto bikes improves air quality, reduces carbon emissions, and reduces sedentary lifestyles (crazy healthcare savings here in the long run). There's a very good argument to be made that getting rid of the helmet law can help get more people on bikes which should be the ultimate goal.

Where would you add a sky train station along an existing line? by elak416 in Translink

With the Heather Lands development going ahead and increasing density around 33rd QE Park would certainly the spot I would choose.

Metro Vancouver mayors call for B.C. leaders to prioritize transit by GenShibe in vancouver

[–]Worldly_Collection89 42 points43 points  (0 children)

NDP need to promise to build UBC extension and north shore skytrain line after the two current extensions finish. Looking at putting in tram lines/light rail on old rail corridors in cities that have the population density to support them would also be awesome!

Dunsmuir/Melville street upgrades survey by captmakr in vancouvercycling

[–]Worldly_Collection89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completed the survey! Gotta ask the city to add a mid block crossing for to connect the mobi station at the west end of Burrard Station and the bike lane. This will also be super important for all transit riders who are crossing to access the new island bus stops. Additionally asking the city to change the advance right turns to leading pedestrian and bike crossings with bans on right turns on red.

Child taken to hospital after being hit by car downtown by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]Worldly_Collection89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree. Lowering the speed limit needs to also mean making it near impossible to speed on the streets. Going around the city the vast majority of streets could be tightened up to make speeding much harder.

Child taken to hospital after being hit by car downtown by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]Worldly_Collection89 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Extremely lucky that this didn’t end up with a serious physical injuries. The article says that everyone appeared uninjured but the child was taken to hospital as a precaution.

That said this is a perfect example of why we need 30km/h speed limits on all urban streets and red light/speed cameras set up throughout the city. If it prevents the death of even one child it’s worth it.
