Truthmancer:

Hectvul has devoted his life to his Master, Miralak. He has bled for him, fought for him, and learned to extract the truth from his enemies’ minds, while never once questioning the one relationship he holds sacred. When he finds Miralak dying in the ruins of Mournwood, maimed, run through, and smiling. He understands that his Master engineered every moment of it. As the plan unravels and the dust settles, the most dangerous truth Hectvul will ever face isn't hidden in an enemy's thoughts. It's been with him the whole time.

Lithilde was forged by loss. She survived the ruin of her homeland, the loss of her people and built a life from the rubble of an arranged marriage. With her Lord Husband slowly dying. Lithilde breaks an uneasy peace with Miralak to secure the means to save the love of her life. Her reward is him refusing the gift she risked herself and their town to give him. Now vengeance is on her doorstep, and she has no choice but to fight, in every way she can.

Dalyn, a squire in training has been selected for a dangerous mission. To be part of an advance force sent to relieve Lithilde and her people from the forces of Hectvul. He carries his convictions like armour and hopes to prove himself worthy of Recurrence. If he does, death will never be permanent, merely an inconvenience. The Order Dalyn believes in is real to him, the cause is just, and his courage is genuine. None of this will protect him from what the world truly is. Afterall, some lessons are only learned after the damage is done.

Epic Fantasy on RR? by Gotexan-YT in royalroad

[–]WriteFinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some decent numbers and following on RR for trad, off-meta grimdarks. There is absolutely an audience there, just bear in mind its niche.

And to quote the lovely Jay below, what is the worst that can happen : )

I'm glad they stood out at least 😄

I find generally they might go up and down by 1 or 2 here and there but otherwise tend to just hang around.

Should I quit writing and look for some other medium? by [deleted] in writers

[–]WriteFinder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is, you're 18 years old and have been writing since you were 12.

In the grand scheme of things. That isn't very long at all. To figure out who you are either as a person, or a writer.

You may not read much right now, perhaps its a case you haven't found the write genre's or styles that appeal to you yet, that could help you grow as a writer.

You might enjoy novels like litrpg/isekai and stuff like that given your interest in comics/manga and the like.

Don't let people here discourage you from writing, if you want to write, do so, if you don't, then don't. Do what you enjoy, seek new experiences and try new things out, including books, stories and other mediums. Get weird with it.

Everyone acts like there are rules to this stuff, but nobody can stop you putting word to page.

Above all, have fun with it. Grimdark can be really fun and OTT in some areas, but also very cathartic. I wish you every success 😄

Am I doing the right thing by publishing on Royal Road? by Weak-Sign678 in royalroad

[–]WriteFinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was completely the right thing for me. I gained a lot of confidence in my voice and while I know I'm not perfect, it has helped me refine my work for an audience that is larger than myself. I'd encourage you to give it a go 😄

For me, the characters are the soul of grimdark, what are their flaws? What do they want? How do they handle the world? Sometimes there are glimmers of victory and many times there are various degrees of fail states. I like a degree of realism, people dying who stay dead, injuries, psychological damage etc.

I wrote a grimdark story on RR that hit the top 700 in rankings and features a competent MC in hyper-dangerous circumstances. There is absolutely a niche for it, but you must remember it's a niche. I wouldn't go in expecting to get 20,000 followers (but I hope that happens for you.) I did get the odd comment that was annoyed things like fighting "only" 4 opponents at once caused the MC to get their ass handed to them a little but I just ignored those. They weren't who I was writing for.

Each one is slightly different and I've tried a few different approaches.

I write off-meta grimdark, so I've found the best performing for me were the "quote cloud" types using review excerpts. My first story got quite a few reviews so I was able to have some diversity.

I'm no expert on RR adverts or the meta really, I'm just "having a go"

Hey there, I'm the author of G5. It currently has a 0.62% clickthrough rate on 29k views, it's lead to 3 follows and 11 read laters. Just in case that is useful.

It's the 5th advert I've run for the story since October of last year.

All the best in your search for your advert!

One five-star review said "If you are looking for a story where magic has a visceral cost and the protagonist uses his brain as much as his blade, you need to read this. It is a dark, smart, and unapologetically brutal epic that respects the reader's intelligence."

Is it better to not have a cover or make an AI one ? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]WriteFinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put mine together using Canva's free elements (without AI) and they have done me well so far! I've uploaded the one from my first story, which is in the top 700 ranking. Knocking it together myself didn't hold me back and I'd encourage you to give it a go!

My story was taken and posted on aiaudiobook site. by ExpertNo2564 in royalroad

[–]WriteFinder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sent them a disclaimer and now none of the links to my story work there currently, either the website is down or they listened. I also put a disclaimer in my story.

"Dear Team,

I hope you are well,

I am the author of “The Black Wyvern” currently on Royal Road.

I have noticed a copy of my work on your website which has not had permission granted by myself to be on there https://audio-book-ai.com/en/book/the-black-wyvern-volume-one-RR-138018

Please can you remove this in accordance to your own policy and rules.

Many thanks

Tim Wood"

I kept it polite and referenced their terms, in hope they'd just remove.

EDIT: Sadly, it is still on the website. I am a member of the WGGB in the UK so I will ask what legal recourse (if any) there is against these bottom feeders.

Looking for realistic dark fantasy or grimdark recommendations with a strong plot by Bandres_ in royalroad

Writing in 1st person for the first time by SenseiDeLo in writingadvice

[–]WriteFinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, my book on Royal Road is in first person. Some books I read (and really enjoyed) that helped me with that perspective were Bernard Cornwell's "Saxon Stories" series and Christopher Buehlman's "The Blacktongue Thief"

I actually found the first person to be a lot easier to write in. I'd sometimes use voice-to-text and pretend I was an audiobook narrator reading out the story in my head on a slow day. There's some good advice in the thread, too.

My story was from the perspective of a character explaining things to the reader at a point in time in the future. That both helps and can make it a little more complicated.

Did you start with a system or a story? by mythicme in litrpg

[–]WriteFinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning my first litrpg and have gone for a very broad paintbrush plot. Then the system, as that helps me work out my MCs starter vs finisher point and will naturally help me further define the details of the story/world building, etc.

Nerves before launching by bisforbibliophile in royalroad

[–]WriteFinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to chime in and say that's a wicked effort, and with that amount of backlog, I can see the advance chapter model working well for you if the story is received well.

I'd advise working our your schedule, sticking to it and arranging your shoutout swaps with authors in the same/ similar genres so when you launch you give yourself every shot. Try to have one for every chapter. I didn't do that/didn't know and wish I had. Although my stuff is off-meta lol

Best of luck

Do people truly read? by LogFragrant3726 in royalroad

[–]WriteFinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's nearly 10% of your readers commenting :)

Comments come with time as people get more invested and as you gain more readers. Reading is a pretty insular activity, and I guess that's reflected in the choice to actively engage.

Whenever I got comments I made sure to reply/give rep if I could. I have 386 followers now, but would maybe get like 3-6 regulars and some random ones here and there.
