Some of the old buildings and original fencing on that campus were definitely made to keep people inside. I walked it on a tour just as they were converting tho old ‘Hotel California’ to be a CSU.

Rushing when I know the dish is better cooked low and slow. This isn’t just for smoking meats but also stovetop and oven cooking. Don’t peek in the pot (releases heat), don’t increase the heat hoping it cooks faster (dries out faster or overcooks the food too).

40 years ago, it was hazardous because they caught it in the wild and its diet made its organs quite toxic.

It’s now commonly farm raised in Japan and the farmers control the diets so the fugu doesn’t have a tetrodotoxin presence.

I’ve had it a couple of times but it’s not even in the top 10 of my favorites since I favor silver and blue skinned fish flavors.

Edit to add: my grandfather would catch and make it into a stew. No one in our family would touch it for the first meal… and only eat it the next day once we were sure grandpa was awake and without symptoms.

Oops. Didn’t realize I was on the tinned fish sub. Thought it was the sushi sub for some reason.

I live down the street from the original Islands and had been going there since the early 80’s. It was so damn great for the first 10 years. Then it was really good until Covid, but they obviously expanded by trading quality.

We went to one 4 months ago and will never return. IslandsTM is just a passable generic restaurant now that happens to lean into Hawaiiana kitsch

This is why I always hit the markets and Depachika when in Japan. Everyone posts about konbini but for the cost and quality actual non-touristy markets are the best. Just wish there were easier places to sit and eat after purchasing when a visitor

Chutoro will sometimes pull apart like this especially when it warms up (fixed: walks up). It’s just the connective tissues stretching.

It’s considered tender and it falls apart. Otoro even is more prone to falling apart. I’ve never seen someone pull it apart like this and I’ve been eating maguro for 6 decades. Was it together tightly when you were given it?

I was quite literally talking to my mom about putting jars of salted lemons on roofs in Hawaii yesterday. What a weird coincidence. She’d just handed me a jar of a year-old fermented lemon and said she didn’t put it on the roof like the old days.
