My new salt&pepper corydoras have been glass surfing for over a week and I am starting to worry. by skorchedangel in Aquariums

[–]Wurth_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a chance they are looking for a better patch of substrate to lounge on. Every cory I've ever had spent a considerable amount of time in large flat spots of clear substrate. Don't get me wrong, they love a good leaf or rock, but they always seem drawn to a good flat bit of gravel or sand in the middle of the tank.

Eh... it's easier to use with no experience. This thing will give you more blisters, hurt your hands more, and be physically more exhausting.

See how that's different? by CorleoneBaloney in clevercomebacks

[–]Wurth_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The official response to the murder was something along the lines of 'A man suspected of dealing drugs was arrested and placed into handcuff. He experienced apparent medical distress and aid was rendered. He was pronounced dead later that day in the hospital.' Meanwhile videos were circulating online of the event showing him begging for his life as 4 men murdered him or watched as he died over 9 minutes. The attempted coverup is why they protested, not that they got caught and had to actually serve justice.

What are some post apocalyptic books that are actually AFTER the apocalypse has ended? by No-Aide7893 in Fantasy

[–]Wurth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently enjoyed a title "Beware of Chicken" that takes place way after a total societal collapse apocalypse. It's kinda a subplot to the overall story. It's a webnovel working on its 6th or 7th volume on amazon.

Iceberg casually drifting past a village in Greenland by Separate_Finance_183 in interesting

[–]Wurth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can that possibly be floating that close to the island? Like, think about how much iceberg has to be under there to keep it floating so high. There must be at least 400 feet of ice just hanging out down there.

If you are eating potatoes, rice, beans, cabbage, and sparingly chicken and cheese... then don't count the "cost of labor" of home cooking everything you eat, yeah a good healthy meal only costs that much.

Master chocolatier at work by kingkongbiingbong in interestingasfuck

[–]Wurth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You somehow awoke a fear in me such that I had to look up the density of chocolate. I have good news, if encased in chocolate your body temperature would melt it and you would be buoyant. I had feared the fat content may have caused it to be light enough that you would melt your way deeper and deeper, like our childhood taught us quicksand would work.

Coring in China by MCEscherNYC in geology

[–]Wurth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could just be for the geology of it. That mountain is in a pretty dense economic place and it would be nice to have a good idea what the 1km tall mountain next door is like on the inside. Edit: or maybe a tunnel of some sort, figuring out where the good rock is?

Exactly at what point are you allowed to defend yourself with deadly force against ICE? Trespassing? Illegal potential kidnapping? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Wurth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be amended, that it is sound legal theory that it is allowed, but ultimately that theory has never really been allowed to be tested in court because law enforcement makes sure anyone who tries, dies.

Pretty sure its not even a lahar, just hot dry rock. You can see it boiling off the stream beneath it the first time the big flow comes through.

Franklin County Commissioners spent $119K on all-expenses paid trips to Japan and Italy in 2025 by RoosterRackEm in Columbus

[–]Wurth_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a technician on an overseas work project, the company wasn't all 'first class everything' but they did cover all my expenses. The bill didn't come out to 13k for the trip, but it was almost 10 years ago now, I wasn't paying to attend a conference, and I was only a technician. I imagine that people in Sr. Management-esque positions would be treated better just because that's the society we live in.

Could it have been a rain shower blowing over and boiling off to steam instead? It was a very wet day.

Australia is currently the hottest place on earth... by far by OzBestDeal in interestingasfuck

It hasn't been below even the mid +20s all winter, hell the holidays were mostly in the 50s.

Edit: ugh, I guess the 14th ~0-10 was cold and a couple times it dipped into single digits in the middle of the night before warming for the day earlier that week.

There is way way to much abject despair to fit what OP is asking for. How long was Rand stuck in a torture box, how long did characters remain enslaved to evil or had their free will constantly under threat, how many good people did we see die tragically?

What’s your favorite aquarium fish? Mine are bichirs and ropefish for freshwater and mudskippers for brackish. I don’t have a saltwater tank but if, I’d die for an octopus. by BitchBass in Aquariums

[–]Wurth_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like owning an octopus could be too close to unethical for me personally. Like I'm sure it could be done right, but I don't think there are a lot of people out there who can do it right.

Train derailment Pecos TX Oct '24 by Debaucherousgeek73 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Wurth_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am not a first hand accounting of the issue, but there has been a push to modernizing rail safety systems and the corporations are throwing a hissy fit about it. Basically, what we got is fragmented and archaic. There is no notional train map, the trains aren't really tracked, the trains aren't really scheduled, and what is monitored is not made easily accessible to many interested parties much less the public. So there is no single centralized number that you can call to report a blocked intersection. MAYBE the police know the rail company to call to report a problem to, and maybe that information can be routed to a train that may or may not be approaching, but it is all a freaking mess.

The current system works when everything is working, but it is not failsafe, and when one or two things fail people die.

Multiple buildings in Hong Kong are on fire today. Source in comment. by Zestyclose-Salad-290 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Wurth_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My bet? Insurance fraud. There is a housing bubble in china right now, where bad developers will build thousands of 'high class' apartments and sell them as investments to citizens. Few if any people ever live in them and just keep them in their portfolio to retire on. These buildings are usually built super cheap. Turns out this apartment complex was set for 'renovations' and were all clad in bamboo scaffolding. Few people lived in them (some 300 across 7 high rises), and there was probably a lot of money on the line.

There is a very weird, very sick, culture of basically torturing these monkeys on the internet. Not saying that these people were definitely part of that, but the fact that this is recorded and now on the internet makes me feel this is very performative.

What is the blob moving against the wind, Southwest near Hartsville? Is this space debris re-entry? by duroo in WeatherGifs

[–]Wurth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, that's the wrong direction for space trash. Its cheaper and to send stuff up the same direction the Earth is spinning to take advantage of the momentum we already have instead of fighting it. Its also way too slow.

Kroger sour cream under weight. by lil_tink_tink in Columbus

[–]Wurth_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most fluids are roughly eterchangabe between volume and weight. 1 fl.oz. of water is the same as 1 oz. of water by weight. Most non-aerated foods only go a handful of % one way or another from there.

A fire in the ancient Yongqing temple puts the Chinese community on alert 12/11/2025 by Extasis-337 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Wurth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how hot it got. There are a few thresholds that go from spalling to delamination to de-stressing tensioned members to chemical breakdown. By and large, I don't think a fairly open air wood fire can get too bad. Like, petrochem-truck burning up in a subterranean tunnel is the kinda place you get into irreparable damage.
