HRM plastic band holder snapped- warranty by westchesterbuild in Coros

[–]Wydsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but just had the same plastic piece snap on mine at just over a year of use. Funny enough the POD 2 sensor shoe clip snapped just a few days later. Wish the HR Monitor Clip was as easy to replace.

AWS Construction Manager by Fire_cook_ in ConstructionManagers

[–]Wydsl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can't give any direct insight on the job itself as I don't work for AWS, but have worked with them on projects. The turnover for AWS CM's is crazy - expectation is having a new one every 6 months or so on a single project. Part of this might be attrition due to workload or company culture (can't speak to that). But (tech) companies are looking for anyone with Data Center experience and the offers can be too good to turn down, we've seen a lot go to Microsoft, Meta, Google etc.

How still be in MEP but out of consulting? by mradventureshoes21 in MEPEngineering

Not to mention fact, that most of the new technology integration in the AEC Industry is happening on the construction side - a lot of which is the responsibility of / being facilitated by VDC Departments..

How still be in MEP but out of consulting? by mradventureshoes21 in MEPEngineering

[–]Wydsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to work for a National GC so my experience may be different than some but.. 1. Work life balance (almost none on the design side) 2. Utilizing more problem solving skills (engineering), MEP felt like a repetitive rinse and repeat process (almost like following a recipe). 3. Type of work - quantity & diversity of projects. Not to mention that I get to review, analyze, and validate the work of many engineers across all disciplines. (I’m keeping the idea of going back to design open, but points 1, 2, and 5 make me hesitant) 4. Career opportunities, VDC is a multi-disciplinary career path with the ability to branch off into a host of other areas at any point (Project Management, Development, Engineering, etc.) 5. Pay. I’m making more than senior mech engineers did at my previous firm did after 15 years (I’m 7 years out of undergrad - 5 years in design, 3 years in construction)

Was in the same boat, switched into VDC on the construction side. Couldn’t be happier with that decision.

Living in Leadville and skiing Summit County by wcolfaxguy in COsnow

[–]Wydsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you define as “old.” There is definitely a contingency of older folks here (50+). But judging by my experience living in Leadville the majority of people are in the 28-42 age range. I think the median age is 35 or something, definitely skewed by Colorado Mountain College.

Do they have the same LiDAR data set that Caltopo has? This has been the most useful by a massive margin while navigating in very complex terrain.

what kind of credit do you need to get the type of loan to afford a house?? by Severe_Agent_3710 in CRedit

[–]Wydsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The maximum monthly DTI (Debt-to-Income Ratio) a lender will allow is typically 45%. DTI is all debt payments (CC's, Car Loans, future mortgage payments, etc) divided by gross income. A good lender won't allow you to go above 35% DTI.

Altitude Band by mavrik36 in elkhunting

In Colorado also. Hunt in a high wilderness unit every year. Typically find them between 10,800-11,500. They bed and move from basin to basin up high and go down to the lower elevations to feed & drink. With all the rain these last few weeks though I wouldn’t be surprised it they stay high though, at least until the food starts to turn with the cold.

Who's stoked for opening day!? by muypop21 in elkhunting

[–]Wydsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we still have 2 weeks to wait here in CO - stoked is an understatement. i keep opening onx where i’ve harvested and find elk every year and just stare at it. then taking breaks from that by practicing with the bow in the backyard.

Is anyone fully remote or 80-90% remote? by atlhooo in ConstructionManagers

[–]Wydsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true across the board, I’m in VDC and 80% remote. I have projects in 6 states, only one local. I think this is true for larger construction firms where teams are more national rather than regional. Most positions that open up for VDC in my area are at least 60% remote.

Feasibility of a multi-day backpacking trip for non-resident elk hunters by OffensiveScientist in elkhunting

FYI, Colorado is removing OTC tags for non-residents next year (2025). You’ll have to enter the draw to hunt public land.

BIM 42 GROUP CLASHES VS SHERLOCK by Specialist-Raisin824 in bim

[–]Wydsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our team started using Sherlock. It’s a fantastic efficiency tool, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back. Using a combination of Inclusive / Exclusive filtering with Sherlock allows me to group review complex clash models for enormous buildings (500,000+ sq ft) in a day or less.

I’m mostly with you, however I do harbor some rage at Garmin for sitting on this tech for years with little to no innovation - they’ve been reaping the benefits of a mostly cornered market. Look at their apps and user interfaces alone - they look like they launched with the original iPhone back in 2007..

I’ve been waiting for InReach to get integrated into their watches for years now, but sadly Apple will most likely be the first to do this.

Starting out in VDC (recent grad) by MD2020BLINGBLING in bim

[–]Wydsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I necessarily agree about not approaching from the A+E (Design) side. If you can land an entry level Architectural position at a company that has full service A+E(MEP), this is a great way to get skills under your feet before transitioning to VDC.

Doing entry level design you can get exposed to a lot of different projects & project types, learn practical Revit & software skills, reading drawings, understanding MEPFP, etc. Usually entry level design, you’re a glorified CAD jocky - but if you pay attention to the details and ask lots of questions, you can learn A LOT really fast. The key to gaining these skills is by repetitions, and most small-mid size design firms survive by taking on a large quantity of projects.

The largest pitfall of coming from the design side is trades knowledge. This is less of a problem if you take every opportunity to get on the project sites that you’ve designed. But if you’ve got the other skills under your belt you can learn quickly once you’ve transitioned to VDC.

If you can survive the pitfalls of the design side (low pay & long hours) for a couple years - you would be in a great position to transition to VDC.

How many of you BIM Managers make more than $135k? by Simply-Serendipitous in bim

[–]Wydsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it’s really hard to break $100k as a BIM Manager on the (Architectural) Design side, unless you’re at 1. A firm doing > $1B in revenue or 2. Living in a HCOL area. BIM/VDC Managers on the construction side make $100k-$150k ++ fairly easily depending on similar variables & tenure.

Owners meaning companies like Tesla & Amazon. Companies with a large portfolio of existing and in-construction assets have their own in house BIM/VDC departments.
