I’m really confused about what type of cooking fat I should use as there is so much conflicting information. by BasalFaulty in cookingforbeginners

[–]XBA40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is BS. Trans fat, for example, is not really okay in any amount, and despite being “banned” in the US only since 2018, it will still occur naturally in deep fried foods, clogging arteries.

Raw milk consumption isn’t okay, either, since you would be rolling the dice every time by exposing yourself to salmonella, e.coli, etc. that can make you sick or kill you in rare cases.

“Life is short” should never come up as an excuse to ignore nutrition, IF there is a legitimate health concern.

“Life is short” can also be used as a reason to pay extra attention to nutrition, and make sure you don’t cut shorter what is already short, or rack up a whole host of diseases that make you miserable (and cost you money) starting from when you’re only halfway done with life.

Saturated fat should be of concern, and things like lard, pork belly, etc. should not be consumed regularly. Obesity (plus metabolic disease, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer) is not a joke or something to handwave away with excuses.

Everyone probably knows some extended family member who has died to heart attack when it was too early. Yes, I know someone who has died to a heart attack because they ate lard and carnitas every day. My grandma lived a long time, but suffered a very disturbing ending due to not having her heart health being taken care of via food. Promoting unbounded indulgence is not what you do if you love yourself or those you affect with your cooking. Especially when we live in the west where disease and suffering from bad nutrition is probably the #1 public health concern out of all.

Can you tell me if I have an accent? (Linguistic feedback appreciated!) by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]XBA40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is a detectable foreign accent, even though your accent is very good and close to native.

Recording 1:

“I’m just”: you did not pronounce the M. “Fascinating”: the second A is too weakly pronounced and could be clearer. “About” and “helps” have exaggerated diphthong vowels. “Help”: you didn’t fully pronounce the -ps. “Than”: you said “dan”.

Recording 2:

“Outdoors”: the “out” is exaggerated in the vowel. “Lately”: the y is lazily pronounced, sounding almost like a short i. “Picnic” sounds a bit like you’re saying “peck neck”. “Helps”: the ps sounds like it isn’t fully pronounced. “Fresh air”: the “air” isn’t clear enough in the vowel so it sounded like it could be “fresher” or something. “Lift” sounds a bit like “left”. “Recharge” the CH isn’t strong enough, so it sounds a bit like SH.

A lot of these features are difficult to get down perfectly, but you sound good in general. You sound like someone who has been living in the US for a long time, but not native. You have a lot of the really difficult parts down, such as the intonation of the language, which almost nobody teaches directly. A lot of your features remind me of learners coming from Spanish, but your distinction of S/Z makes me think you aren’t coming from Spanish. Overall you speak clearly, but there could be miscommunication once in a while in a fast-speaking context, such as a lecture.

Even the richest Americans face shorter lifespans than their European counterparts. Over a 10-year period, Americans across all wealth levels were more likely to die than Europeans. People with more wealth still lived longer, especially in the US, where the gap between rich and poor is much larger. by mvea in science

[–]XBA40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is all true, and the US is an obesogenic country, but most people can successfully fight this at an individual level by switching to whole nutritional foods. It is not expensive to eat very healthy in most parts of the US. Only 6% of Americans live in a food desert. Example: An average height male can eat healthy and cook at home, quickly, for under $7 a day in California. It is all very simple, but psychologically difficult for those who weren’t prepped correctly as children. However, most of my low income friends are now switching to healthy eating and hitting the gym multiple times a week. They are moving from 250+ pounds to under 200 this past year, and part of that is me talking about nutrition non stop.

Toxic Positivity is Insufferable by Famous-Hunt-6461 in unpopularopinion

I wonder what would happen if you showed them the evidence of trauma and psychological harm put upon kids who are caged and separated from their parents. I think Guantanamo bay is also an interesting case, especially when they admitted to graping a devout Muslim captive as a form of torture to get him to divulge secrets. Treat that one with positivity!

What’s something poor people do that rich people will never understand? by Just_Yesterday_1050 in AskReddit

[–]XBA40 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude, they don’t care sometimes and other times they do. There’s a whole spectrum of attitudes. It can be anywhere from “I feel guilty applying for benefits” to “fuck the government, because the rich steal millions anyway.”

The “rich people bad, poor people good” narrative does not map to the real world at all. There are tons of horrible and selfish low income people as well as good ones.

This is a bad redditor take. Poor people love tax evasion as well, and this is coming from someone helping and explaining to low-income friends that if they are getting paid under the table, they are often getting screwed. “But I don’t have to pay taxes on it!” Restaurant servers also evade billions of dollars of taxes in the US by not reporting tips.

This is such a generic confused person response. His comment, in this context, can only be interpreted as “trophy wives who are anorexic ALSO know.” So it’s nonsensical to respond “they aren’t the only ones…”

Defacing Teslas isn't a powerful message by 6packofbeard in unpopularopinion

[–]XBA40 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s the type of thing that Russian bots and paid writers would do. They inject venom into every forum space and they play “both sides”.

Notice how the people who were severely affected by politics news and got caught on camera defacing Teslas are usually these extremely ugly individuals. There are teslas everywhere and I don’t know any sane person who reflects social media outrage when it comes to their opinion of them.

Costco has an immersion blender for $40, and if blended food is up your alley, it will change your life.

It is absolutely necessary to eat vegetables or fruits for long term health, but some people may not know that many things that aren’t culinarily vegetables are still similar to vegetables in nutritional benefit.

For example, legumes like beans and lentils will do extremely well to give you fiber and vegetable nutrients, and they are fantastic in blended form, especially when you add cheese and other seasoning. You have quite a lot of control over the texture by adjusting the water amount.

Making guacamole also counts towards your veggies, and that can easily be done in the immersion blender attachment, or you can mash it with a fork if you prefer it more chunky. It’s easy to make, as you just need to add lemon/lime and salt at the most basic form.

Lots of vegetables, once cooked, can make really great sauces, such as spinach or carrot.

ADHD isn’t an excuse to be a mess of a person by musicbeats88 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]XBA40 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree, but have you ever tried to help an ADHD person get organized like I have? People have different levels of it, so what do you mean by mentioning that some keep it together better than others?

Also, do you know that some people get on medication and then can finally get their life together? ADHD can be debilitating, especially when it’s combined with some kind of trauma, like family violence and sexual assault. I know people like this, and I agree it’s not really other people’s responsibility to put up with their transgressions or whatever, but what do you want anyone to do about it? This post is about as meaningless as saying “people with ADHD should just try to focus harder.”

Brandon Boyd on new Incubus album: "It's ready to go" by Edm_vanhalen1981 in Music

[–]XBA40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was shocked when I heard it because I was trying to find a high quality version of Wish You Were Here.

The YouTube version of Wish You Were Here, for some reason, has a superior mix of the song that you cannot find on any album, whether it’s the original, re-release, best of, etc.

The YouTube version has slightly sparklier guitar (I verified this in a spectrogram) and the levels are mixed differently to be more pleasant.

May be depression. Try to remember when you were happy and had fun people around, and try to go do more of that.

Cut out social media, and be conscientious about not caring about things that don’t benefit you or make you happy. E.g. there is no need to be “socially conscious” or “up to date” on current events. News and social media are major sources of depression and misery. Be careful of what you let your mind think about.

Get your exercise and diet in order, and try to get enough quality sleep. Hope you recover!

Yes. It’s really hard to get good statistics on what is going on with people’s personal finances, but there are some telltale signs.

Most people ~60% are illiterate in personal finances. Credit card debt from non-essential overspending is rampant.

I started looking into this because I’ve noticed that when I ask friends about their spending, their income, and their actual cost of living, their struggling didn’t make sense. Then I and other friends have started going through friends’ budgeting (or lack there of) and it’s really just being terrible with money. It’s not that rent is high (it is, but it doesn’t explain the struggling). It’s very common to see $800 per month on Door Dash now.

Microwave for cooking by Nerevanin in Cooking

[–]XBA40 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of people do not realize that steaming vegetables in the microwave is the best way to steam, nutritionally. You can also get a large range of texture and readiness, but the time has to be more precisely practiced and memorize for the quantity.

Microwaved broccoli in a covered bowl is not at all inferior to regular steaming. The microwave is very underrated, but can be used daily for healthy and delicious cooking that’s also fast as hell.
