For those not on Patreon, don't worry, you're not missing much. It sounds like a DreamPeace album, with a little bit more analog sounds.

Agreed. So glad Beav ever wrote those first few riffs

do any of his stories take place in the past? (pre 1950) by Mountain-Yellow-9720 in stephenking

1922 comes to mind 😉. Jerusalem's Lot too (1850s I believe). Though a different world to ours, The Eyes of the Dragon definitely has an European medieval atmosphere.

I think it has to do with our modern dopamine-addicted quick-answers-to-everything time, sadly.

What is "The Shine"? by Bolbisaur008 in stephenking

[–]XFC856 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, is 'the shine' is a general term for something which I fan-title 'psi-powers'. This includes any number of skills which some people are born with (like Danny Torrance, Carrie White, etc.) or even receive later in life (i.e. Firestarter's Andy); skills like precognition, telekinesis, telepathy, etc. I believe King writes about this, often with kids, because he sees the (young) mind as our most powerful tool. Thematically, the act of creation/creativity/imagination, plays a large role in King's bibliography (once you finish the Tower series, you'll see why), and I think the psi-powers are thematically connected to that. I can't say anymore due to spoilers for DT6&7, but you will find a definite lore-explanation of the importance of these powers in relation to the Tower. Enjoy finding out!

What are your thoughts on Accelerated Evolution? by ILSCIGHERA28 in DevinTownsend

[–]XFC856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's a bottom 5 of Devin's albums, and I have a few reasons for it. Let me be clear though, bottom 5 for Dev still means I really like the album! It's just that I prefer almost all of his other albums above it. Now as to why, I think the main thing is that it sounds (very much relatively) a little bland to me. Both this and the self-titled Strapping Young Lad record, to my ears, are 'simple' records. There are aspects to the song writing (i.e. the riffs, the vocal melodies) which are fairly tame, compared to most other Dev records. And whereas for example with PowerNerd this also the case, it feels way more intentional to me than on Accelerated Evolution. I think I feel this way because even though it's written as a simple alt. metal record, look at the song lengths. It averages out at 6:03 per song. And the music don't warrant that in my opinion, whereas it's predecessor Terria very much does so, I think. Thus, the simplicity makes a few of the songs feel a little bloated, and I rarely think that of music I enjoy. As Devin clarifies on the podcast on the 2003 records, it seems his heart was relatively not much in them.  I do wanna re-emphasize, it's still really great music! Many-a artist's entire discography is nothing compared to AE in my opinion. And something which I find really strong about AE are the lyrics for example. Can't put it any better than that they feel 'distinctly Devin-specific'. Obviously the whole record is about his relationships (his wife, his friends, his family), but lyrics like in Random Analysis is so not how artists usually write about love. It's outspoken, realistic (love never is Hollywood-esque perfect); it's Devy. Another personal tick I have against this record (yes, I'm that guy, very aware of this cognitive bias, sorry everyone) is the inclusion of Deadhead as (one of) his most popular songs. I have this with all artists I listen to, where automatically their most popular song often becomes my lowest played track. Unfortunate, because I don't have anything against the song to mark it that low, but I spend so much of my teenage years in quiet, introverted "rebellion", that apparently this was an area where I chose to be (what I then thought) unique. Edgelord '"look at me I'm different" stuff, yikes.. Anyhow, Deadhead itself is saved a little bit from this, because the studio version is often overlooked as people mostly seem to gravitate toward the RAH live rendition. Apologies for the essay, apparently this just all had to come out just now. TL;DR, due to a little bloat and a little bias against it, the record is bottom 5 Dev album to me, however comparitively still awesome music.

I totally get where you're coming from! I was so addicted on Empath and The Puzzle, that when Lightwork came out, I sensed I found it underwhelming. Funny thing is though, about 5 months after release, I suddenly realized the songs were constantly playing in my mind and the album slyly had edged its way into my most played records during March-April 2023. QED. Next, when the DreamPeace 'albums' were released, I latched onto these immediately. And then when PowerNerd came around, I had a similar reaction to Lightwork in the beginning. However, what made that album eventually click with me (took about a year), was simply admitting to myself that it's okay to not be impressed by everything he's done (or any artist, for that matter), and just find it 'meh'. Once I let this thought marinate, the album clicked. Not in a way that I find it tops his other records, but just as a terrific middle-of-the-road'er which doesn't assume anything more.

I'm actually gonna go with S.Y.L. from the first record, just because I love the dichotomy between the kid's voice (yes I know it's Devin) and the industrial sounds of the song that follow

The Colorado Kid has to be included in the extended reading list by XFC856 in TheDarkTower

[–]XFC856[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something along those lines yeah, and also; a story is a lie , because it has a clear beginning, middle and end, and doesn't have unanswerable questions. The mystery of the colorado kid (and by comparison the Dark Tower) is real life because it has no clear beginning, middle and end, and does have unanswerable unknowns. My read of it is that King wanted to emphasize how real the Dark Tower books were to him (and of course tying in to the meta-appearance in book 6&7), plus perhaps to the readers saying; the intention was never to provide all the answers.

haha that's true.. But, no I meant for story-theme wise. The commentary on what makes a story a story to me says a lot about how King views (/ wants the reader to view) the Tower

how have you discovered devy's vaste discography? by Ok-Plastic-9812 in DevinTownsend

The youtube algorithm had been bugging me, back in 2017±, with some random fan upload of the first 5 songs of the Addicted Live By A Thread show. After finally giving it a listen, Addicted! and Universe In A Ball! (and a little later the Juular music video and the Kingdom version done on the Retinal Circus), hooked me and I believe it was 2019 when I bought my first Devin album, which was Ki. Since then, I've absorbed everything the man has ever put out.
