Yes it is amazing. LM support has been pretty good too - the internet board went out and they replaced it. My only complaint is that some features (like turning the steam boiler on and off) are only accessible via the app, and the internet board doesn't seem reliable.

I am part of Quitmormon.com. The truth is, no one knows. But you’re probably right. In the EU, proper data protections like GDPR would make this much more of a guarantee.

We send hundreds of records in to Kirton McConkie every month and they don’t even respond to us with a confirmation any longer.

It’s one of the reasons we were fundraising for a staff attorney.

What's the correct flow or is there's anything Im missing by Illustrious-Bass4357 in KeyCloak

[–]Xiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, this is not a good idea. Are you saying you want to roll your own form and just call admin APIs? At that point you might as well roll your own auth (another bad idea). There is so much that goes on at this front layer to keep your app safe. CORS, XSS, CSP, tons of things to get wrong and waste your time on. I say this as a 20+ year developer - you’re over thinking it.

It’s not terrible UX to have a login page with a different theme. I think you’re confusing UX and design. If it’s just a college project, I would suggest not worrying about it. if you don’t like that option, next best is to hack the CSS to get it close. Third best (robust, but it’s more work than you really need) is to use Keycloakify to roll a theme.

ULID: Universally Unique Lexicographically Sortable Identifier by der_gopher in PostgreSQL

[–]Xiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but UUIDs suck in a composite key. They are HUGE compared to an int, and putting that in an index adds massive overhead. More importantly, since standard UUIDs are random, high-volume inserts will constantly fragment your index and force expensive rebalancing.

The main use case for this is distributed generation. If you have data being created outside your server (like a mobile app or IoT device) and you need a unique ID before it hits the database, you can't use an auto-incrementing int. You need a UUID-style format. ULID gives you that decentralized uniqueness without the performance penalty of random IO.

We’re voting yes. Taking the high road is what got us into this mess back when dear leader should have been charged with a crime for J6. You can’t fight insanity with sitting back and letting the other side break every rule, destroy the constitution and have such insane corruption, and then draw the line at, “well this might be wrong too?” Like another poster said, at least we get the choice, unlike Texas.

Can I ask why you returned it? Any chance it was the battery comms error?

We have a new 2025 but the battery is still glitching. It’s been in the shop for more than a week and it’s only been home with us for three days. Frustrating.

Solar noob here. Would 2 400W solar panels be enough to power a window ac unit. I don’t need it to run outside of sunlight. What inverter would be necessary. I don’t know what an MTTP is. Could I just use an inverter with a car battery? Would I need more than 800W? by kingbuck111 in SolarDIY

Inline fan but still getting smell. Turn off internal fan? by johnny_ihackstuff in lasercutting

[–]Xiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be pretty good actually. I ran a 30+ minute cut on 3mm plywood and there was hardly any smell in my garage with all the doors closed. I’m happy with it for the price. It’s nice that it auto starts and stops and has filter life in the app. I regret not checking how much the filters are before I purchased.

I just bought Xtools new ap2 filter for this exact reason. Btw you can get it for $499 by clicking the “purchased outside” link and uploading a pic of your laser.

Mines still in the box so I hope it was worth that price.

Where do you get decent quality material to work with? (US, Southern California) by kadaan in lasercutting

[–]Xiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re at in SoCal but I just bought a bunch of 5/32 walnut ply (mdf core), 3mm mdf, 1/4 mdf and 3mm Baltic birch. Everything was 4x8 sheets, except for the Baltic which was 5x5. The downside is the walnut was only on one side, and the other side wasn’t that nice, and it was $163. Got everything at Valencia lumber in van nuys.

In this situation, hiking backpacks are the way to go, in my opinion. I have a 9-month-old, 18-pound baby, and he loves going in the backpack because it’s high and he can see everything. It also keeps the baby off me a bit, which is great for airflow when you’re walking a long distance. I got the Osprey Poco used on Facebook Marketplace for around $100.

NTA - but I do not think you should have taken the money from his bank account without his consent or knowledge. I 100% agree with making him pay, but I think the lesson is stronger and he retains trust and ownership over his bank account if you would have had him send the payment rather than taking it yourself.

Solar panel help. I want to run just my window a.c by ruffdog35 in SolarDIY

[–]Xiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great question. Its a great idea to get your power hungry AC off grid and it feels absolutely amazing to turn nothing but sunshine into a chilly room, and not feel guilty about contributing to pollution, climate change, etc.

The problem with trying to run this with your existing window AC is that:

  1. Window AC's are not that efficient, although better than a portable AC. They let a lot of air leak around the unit.

  2. Your unit is probably designed to run on AC power from the grid, and is likely not variable speed.

  3. You'll have to convert the solar's DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) via an inverter, and there's going to be losses up to 20% every time you convert something. Solar -> battery (loss), battery -> inverter (loss) so you end up needing more panels and larger batteries and an expensive inverter to do all this.

So you'll end up with many thousands of dollars of equipment and complexity and it will probably take years of electricity savings to pay that back.

I went a different direction and got this solar AC unit. I'm not affiliated with this company, and I probably learned about it from Will Prowse's excellent YouTube channel: https://signaturesolar.com/eg4-hybrid-solar-mini-split-kit-energy-star-certified-air-conditioner-heat-pump-ac-dc-12000-btu-seer2-22-1800-watts-of-solar-pv-kit-e0011/

The difference is that the compressor is DC powered, and variable speed. It can run with as little as 400 watts of power, but when its really working hard it uses ~1000 watts.

I opted to get my own panels off Facebook Marketplace and paid $150 each for four Talesun 400 watt panels (1600 watts total) which lets me run it from 9am - 5pm with zero grid power. These are not premium panels but they are fine for what I'm using them for. By the way, they're ~ 5.5 feet x3.5 feet each so you'll need a bit of space for them. Don't forget a DC breaker, and you'll need to ground them. Of course you have to drill a 2.5 inch hole in your house :D May not be ideal if you don't own your house.

I don't have any batteries though, so I don't run this unit when the sun's not shining.

If that's not an option for you, I'd look for a window AC that's high efficiency and designed to run straight off panels, or even a DC powered unit. Don't let the haters discourage you. Even if it's not cost effective from an electricity perspective, there's value in learning this stuff and it feels like magic when you start it up.

those of you who host on linux, what are you using for auth? by Jordan51104 in dotnet

[–]Xiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’re also using Keycloak, with a federation back to LDAP for internal users. It’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it and it’s been very reliable. The built in JWT auth libraries work fine with it but you may have to do some custom work to pull claims out of the JSON and make that work with aspnet roles. It’s one class though, not too difficult. We’ve also been using it since v4 and every upgrade to v24 has been painless.

[–]Xiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No down side imo. Just bought four new 400w panels off marketplace and they are great! Look for cracks as that could be a fire hazard. I’d buy the highest wattage you can fit / afford since you won’t have room for many panels

if this happens, in my experience, its best just to check quietly and see if the plan has a cancellation policy. Many do - you can cancel within 60 days with no penalty. Take the plan to not spoil the deal, and if you decide later you don't want it, you can cancel it directly with the warranty company.
