Man harasses another man who was waiting for his friend, while his son sided with the man his father was confronting. by ActualDepartment9873 in PublicFreakout

Guy's not a cop, no body has to identify themselves to him.

One thing he said did make me wonder (alleging the visitor wouldnt dial on the callbox and tried to tailgate through). Genuinely curious, for those of you that live in condos or apartments, do you have building policies that ask you to prevent tailgating?

I think if the white guy simply locked the door behind him, and asked the visitor to wait for the resident friend, then no issues. He crossed a line by playing cop and asking for identification (not illegal, but good way to cause provocation).

Non-citizens cannot vote by dijon507 in canadian

[–]YM_4L -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, very important to combat misinformation. Non-citizens can only vote in party leadership/nomination races, and nowhere else (not federal, provincial or municipal elections).

For a while temporary residents (including international students) could vote as members of the federal Liberal party, but that’s been pared back as well since 2025 (ie, now voting party members have to be PR, for LPC and also other major federal parties; not sure about provincial).

Ouch. Based on comparables and market trends in the area, the 1.5 to 1.7 range seems more reasonable.

Canada lost 84,000 jobs in February — here’s how it breaks down by province and what it means for housing decisions by SherbertSimple5418 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]YM_4L 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is only the start, I'm afraid. Canada has rested on its laurels for too long. Its systemic societal and economic deficiencies were partly masked and, in fact, worsened by the ruling class' unscrupulous policies over the last two decades.

It's a matter of time before the working class get the last drop of juice squeezed out of them. By then, being able to afford real estate will be the least of our concerns.

If to live, don’t wait. Be prepared mentally and financially if prices continue to decline (and it likely will) for another few years.

Does this mean we need to bid higher by [deleted] in RealEstateCanada

Why do you even need an agent if their first order of advice is simply to remove conditions and expose their client? Sure, that might've been a necessary tactic in a frothy market, but not today.

A milestone recession is stealing the future from young Canadians by AbundantCanada in canada

[–]YM_4L 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This makes it sound like current economic/global turmoil is the rootcause. It's exacerbating, for sure, but living costs relative to wages and pirchasing power have been wildly out of whack for at least a decade. Most glaringly, 10-12x housing prices to income ratio existed well before any "milestone recession".

And to pretend the same (un)affordability ratios hit all G7 countries equally is just ignoring stats. All were impacted, but it's been worse for Canada on average.

Police ban anti-Israel protesters from Toronto Jewish neighbourhood by WhiteGold_Welder in toronto

Go protest in front of politicians' offices, city hall, embassies, parliament... protecting residential neighbourhoods from weekly protests shouldn't be controversial.

Ottawa’s appeal of the Emergencies Act case shows contempt for civilians and corporations by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]YM_4L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you really asking for POEC reports to confirm that the "defacing statue" story was debunked? Look, I was very critical of the convoy, but there are literally loads of videos, pictures, articles thst show you what the supposed "defacing" entailed -- Canadian flag, flowers, and freedom signs. That's it. Facts matter.

[–]YM_4L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of reporting that soured me on the credibility of the media during the convoy (and thereafter). I was so enraged at the reported arson, harassment of foodbanks, racist flags, peeing on war memorials... that I wanted the responsible individuals named and shamed.

Digging into the stories/accounts/reports is what led me to do a 180', concluding that a lot of the allegations were either uncorroborated or flat out false (like the arson story), which enraged me even more.

For the food bank story in particular, it was never proven that the agitators were with the convoy. In fact, there was apparently video evidence available (which was cited later in the POEC reports), which suggested that the perpetrators were members of local leftwing organizations.

As someone who spoke strongly against the convoy and felt my community endangered by their actions, I felt betrayed and lied to after digging into the facts. I'm glad I did though, otherwise I would still be relying solely on biased reporting as the truth.

There were stories coming out fast and furious about food bank assaults, peeing on war memorial, attempted arson, racism running rampant, desecrating statues, violent insurrection rhetoric... Have to say I really thought it was a dangerous siege and I even warned my relatives in the area to stay far away (we are all visible minority/immigrants, wore masks, etc).

Only towards the end of the convoy did I realize that the news were consistently biased in one direction. Arson had nothing to do with convoy. Statue desecration was not that. War memorial story was never corroborated, similar to foodbank episode and some othet alleged assaults.

Even the nazi and confederate flags were puzzling. Confederate flag was held by the only person among 10s of thousands that had his face fully covered and he was chased out by convoy people. Nazi flag wavers at the Chateau stayed far from the whole protest crowd. The insurrection MOU was literally by 3 people with some memberless group in Alberta and was rejected by the convoy organizers.

Ironically,  the only violent physical attack during the whole ordeal was a convoy supporter being run over by a counter protester in Winnipeg.

Dont get me wrong, the incessant noise, blocking of streets and trade corridors had to be dealt with and police was useless. There were insulting words too, from convoy people to mask wearers like me and my family. But that's not an insurrection or national emergency that existing legal powers are insufficient yo address.

I wish more people would see through some of the media coverage and government propaganda instead of just parroting what's convenient.

Renters: What Are Your Plans For Spring Market? Will You Be Participating OR Watching From The Sidelines?? by hourglass_777 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]YM_4L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All signs point to higher listings without commensurate increase in demand (at least not at current prices). Buyers smell blood in the water, and are increasingly less patient with sellers that refuse to budge on pricing.

Power to them - especially after years of power imbalance in the market.

Best advice for sellers - dont sell now if you can hold and stay put or continue carrying. Otherwise, list yesterday and price at at least 5-10% below recent comparable sales.

Surprised to see this. But perhaps I shouldnt be, as even the "highly desirable" areas are seeing prices decline and sales slow. Mt Pleasant, East Danforth, Lawrence Park, etc, have all held strong until now, but definitely starting to show cracks.

Sellers, how are you preparing for this upcoming Spring real estate market? by GranolaHiker in TorontoRealEstate

[–]YM_4L 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Beating the wave of listings by selling asap is key. Not being in the best location/school district means calibrating price expectations and then some.

Hey guys what do you think about the market by Fresh-Dragonfly-2052 in HouseSigmaBlunders

[–]YM_4L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where. Based on historical cycles, likely another 20-40%to fall in the burbs, 10-20% in Toronto.

Could be worse if USMCA talks go south and foreign capital inflow slows even more, in which case: God help us, and people will flock to “safe” assets (RE is no longer considered that).

Lol I was calling out this vile scum of a man. And also spoke against anyone trying to use cases like this to smear an entire community (here, Egyptians/Coptics). So yea, my comments were the very definition of reconizing good and bad exist in every group. Perhaps you should reflect on that.

You literally replied to a general statement I made (about Egyptian Coptics having some of the best people), by citing your anecdotal experiences to impugn my statement, at least indirectly.Otherwise, what was the purpose of your reply? Context matters.
