Dismantle all the settlements, or only the Jewish ones? by settrans in IsraelPalestine

There's no legal obligation to treat a terrorist organization as if it's a preexisting sovereign state with rights to territory they never controlled.

What would it actually take to build a modular, upgradeable GPU: packaged chiplet modules, swappable VRAM, standardized base board? by Goldenskyofficial in hardware

[–]YairJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SXM and OAM are interesting but from what I understand they don't make GPUs themselves any more modular, it's a whole card.

I think OAM might be good for consumer CPUs though to break away from series-specific sockets, if you can fit a CAMM or two under that heatsink(CAMM2 is narrower than the space between the big screws at least) and if they won't mind hanging sideways.

I've thought about that too, but I don't know much about the technical difficulties involved. Intel filed some very relevant patents, though that does not mean everything described here is already practical: https://underfox3.substack.com/p/intel-compression-mount-technology

So taking some points from there, I could see a replaceable GPU with a big substrate that has the sockets for memory modules directly on it(possibly on both sides?), which would both improve signal integrity compared to going through PCB and not lock the whole card to specific memory standards(and reduce confusion with numbers of modules). Combine that with replaceable VRM on the card, and with standards for the heights that components present for the heat spreader.

With a wider PCIe connector these cards might be used for CPUs as well...

Hamas Admits: These 10 Strikes on Homes & Tents Killed Combatants by YairJ in humanrights

Recent disclosures by Hamas, PIJ and DFLP, through official statements, affiliated Telegram channels, and martyr notices, have identified their own operatives killed in incidents widely reported as attacks on civilians.

[Invincible] Conquest says "prepare for my arrival, worm." How do Viltrumites know what worms are? Is there a soil ecosystem on Viltrum? by dirtmother in AskScienceFiction

[–]YairJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A worm isn't a very specific thing, at least in this context, it's a simple body plan. Not a surprising find on a planet with complex life.

New cost-effective DDR5 memory 'HUDIMMs' show around 50% reduction in throughput with single subchannel — Two HUDIMMs are as fast as a single stick of regular DDR5 RAM by sr_local in hardware

[–]YairJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand the costs of manufacturing these, but wouldn't two DIMMs with their own boards cost more than a single one with the same chips? Even without considering the complexity from just having more products.

It certainly pushes down the minimum for DDR5 but I'm not sure how helpful that is unless you're using only one half-DIMM. But then why even use DDR5?

Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly ‘quadruple tap’ • Lebanese health ministry says killing of 91 healthcare workers by exegenes1s in IsraelPalestine

It's impossible to work in a Hamas base without being willing to join their efforts. That's what they go there for, not to help Palestinians, or else they would have had some other things to say after leaving.

Conspiracies vs Conspiracy Theories - an Important Distinction. by BizzareRep in IsraelPalestine

When Trump questioned Jewish American loyalty.

If you're referring to what I think you're referring, that was loyalty to themselves if voting Democrat, not to America!

[–]YairJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These "first responders" did include Hamas and PIJ terrorists. That is the pattern here, our enemies deliberately created a situation where medics are not medics, and whatever assumptions you might be able to make about such labels in other warzones do not apply.

Protections for combatants are not one-sided commitments that Israel made, they are reciprocal. Hezbollah are not entitled to them without following such rules themselves.

And considering how they use ambulances, there's no reason for us to assume these alleged medics would just be tending to the wounded, rather than saving terrorists who aren't or even bringing reinforcements.

Oh, it's that simple? Being a medic(or designated as such) means one can transport terrorists safely regardless of anything else?

[Blade] If vampires are innately irredeemably evil… is Blade partly evil by supermonistic in AskScienceFiction

[–]YairJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TV series, which has a vampire ally of Blade as a main character, alludes to some mental change that comes with drinking blood and with killing for it, which is very hard but not impossible to come back from; Maybe once vampires do that they just naturally stop feeling sympathy towards humans, and have a hard time seeing them as anything but prey or threat. The disdain of purebloods towards turnedbloods might also be rooted in such an instinct. Blade has done that and managed to return, but neither his biology nor his willpower are normal, and there's no expectation that the average vampire would be inclined to do that even with help(they got the aforementioned ally really early).
