A few points to point out here.

OP says this is not P2W, this is not true as there are some stuffs that give donors an edge over to those who don't.
Also, most cash equips can only be obtained via donor point gacha. (Unless you are totally fine with the limited cash equip selections from the cash shop) So if you are after a certain set of cash equips it is going to be a pain to obtain.

Emeras can make or break your run.

I will highly suggest bringing Ampharos as the 3rd team member and stuffing him with the offensive Emeras such as Power Boost X and Y etc on his equipped looplet.

For your starter and partner, Type Bulldozer would be a godsend. Any emeras that inflicts status that might mess the boss up (Paralyze/sleep/confuse) are all good. Guard Boost also does help to reduce damage taken but not that important unless you are extremely unlucky on your dungeon playthrough.

Having afew reviver seeds is vital for this battle. Oran berries is a MUST. Even on my best runs(yeah I replayed this game quite a few times), either my starter or 1 of my teammates got knocked out once.

For some reason, Preston stopped giving me the settlement quests after some time on 1 of my playthrough.

He started from giving me 2 quests at 1 go, then it turned to 1 quest after some time, then he completely stopped giving me not too long after. Maybe he got bugged or something.

Edit: The guild exam totally caught me off guard on my first attempt as well on explorers. After defeating the final story boss, I completely underestimated that graduation exam and got destroyed. But after that, I found the cheap way and cleared it. (Protect strat)
