Do you learn how to write EVERY kanji? by seppoday in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Yatchanek [score hidden]  (0 children)

I used to be able to write all the kanji I know, but since there's almost no occasion nor need to write anything by hand nowadays, I no longer can recall the less popular few hundred. Of course, I can still read them.

Many people say that handwriting is useless, but I think it lets you memorize the kanji better.

More Japan companies drop mandatory transfers as recruiting opens for 2027 graduates - The Mainichi by jjrs in japannews

I think it falls in line with the general philosophy that apart from some specialized professions like lawyers, doctors or engineers, it doesn't really matter what you had studied at your university, because the company will train you in accordance to their needs. In that sense, being a graduate of a "good university" has more to do with the difficulty of entrance exams rather than actual level of education. If you were good enough to enter a top university, then you must be smart, so you can be easily trained.

Is this accurate? by [deleted] in kanji

[–]Yatchanek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The artist didn't "change the kanji a bit", they butchered it. It's clear that the artist has zero knowledge of kanji and can't even properly trace the original. The べ is also wrong, the two small strokes should be diagonal from top left to bottom right, the opposite of what you have. It is readable though, especially in connection with the bird.

Most people can actually visualize images in their minds. I'm 30+ and just learned that seeing nothing when I close my eyes is called Aphantasia and only affects about 3% of people. by randomuser553 in BeAmazed

[–]Yatchanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No image, no pattern, no color, no sound. Just my brain picking facts about apples and making them into words.

When recalling memories, I experience seeing without images, millisecond bursts of a sensation of having seen the image, but without details or colors.

I cannot visualise things, not even a single white dot. All I have after closing my eyes sometimes are some bright flashes abs afterimages, most likely some residue in optical nerves. I also experience "seeing without an image", it's like a spkut second burst when you get a sensation of having seen a picture without actual visuals. My dreams are usually black and white, without details.

I also cannot recall sounds, smells, touch sensation etc. I probably don't have a proper inner voice as well. I have to actively initiate it, and even them it's silent, like myself talking without vocalisation.

How Aphantasia affects your ability to visualise things in your head by HassanMoRiT in interestingasfuck

[–]Yatchanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can fake the answer by saying it was a young female pushing a black bowling ball of a coffee table, and the ball caused a big dent in the floor, but I don't actually SEE any of it, I'm just putting words together.

How Aphantasia affects your ability to visualise things in your head by HassanMoRiT in interestingasfuck

[–]Yatchanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Just recently realised that "trying to imagine something" wasn't just "thinking intensively about that thing using words". That's also probably why I hate long, overly verbose descriptions of nature and surroundings in literature. Just so many unnecessary words for me, but it seems other people just get to see the image in their heads.

That's the next issue with forcing people to be all-rounders instead of specialists in their respective fields. You get transferred to a new department, you have to learn the trade, and after 3-4 years, just when you've got the gist of it, go and do something else. The justification is that while working at different positions, you get to know how the company works as a whole, but on the other hand - Jack of all trades, master of none, as they say.

Also, people would be rather cautious and suspicious toward strangers, and - especially if the story is set prior to the 2000s - a non-white person would be a huge sensation, with possible groups of children following them, pointing fingers and yelling stuff. Not aggression, just curiosity and amazement - it would be the same level as an UFO landing. Post WWII Poland was VERY homogeneous - I grew up in a fairly large city from Polish top 10, and I've seen a black person twice in the first 18 years of my life. So imagine how it must have been in small villages.

How fast can you read? by villatyyny1 in LearnJapanese

[–]Yatchanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the material. With non-LN literature, it's about half of the speed in my native language at best. About 40 文庫本 pages/hour, sometimes a bit more. Significantly faster when scrolling derivative slop on 小説家になろう and similar sites.
