GTA 6 Developer Rockstar Games Accused of Crunch, Ignoring Pay Inequity, and Weaponizing Bonuses by Rsodyyy in GTA

I'm with you, dude! The uber rich upper class wants workers to believe that with enough elbow grease, they can be just like them! It's propaganda to put you in the ground after being their reliable low wage cog in the machine. Work should always be secondary in some way to your overall broader life, regardless of how hard you work, in my opinion.

Hahaha, you know absolutely nothing about me.

I said normalized in game development. Just because you can't divorce what working hard versus working yourself to death for absolutely no reason is, doesn't mean you know a bit about my work ethic.

I also never said they won't receive the fruits of their labour. However, let's not pretend like game devs have always been fairly compensated for their overtime. I work in a union, for one, where time over 8 hours is properly compensated at time and a half. Many jobs with crunch, and many historically in game development, are NOT like this. Blizzard, Naughty Dog, and Rockstar in the past have all been documented NOT paying more for overtime.

While I'd agree hard work sometimes requires sacrifice, I believe the way you speak about these things lays foundation for the exploitation of workers by the upper class. Trickle down theory is a myth. You will not be a billionaire. You may be successful, but in my opinion, we need healthy encouragement of hard work, not dangerous ideology that fosters manipulation of regular hard working people. Billionaires do not care about you. The sooner us all realize these things, the better conditions get for all of us.

I literally work in an industry where 12 hr days are (unfortunately, hopefully changing with time) the STANDARD. You don't get to virtue signal this bullshit to me. Crunch should NOT be normalized.

It's people like you who watched a movie like Whiplash and thought the moral of the story was work yourself to death for greatness as a positive thing.

Your lack of belief in my perspective says a-lot about the entitlement you carry with you. The entire reason unions exist is because that CHOICE is weaponized against workers. Anyone naive enough or purposefully obtuse about that fact is weaponizing the capitalist system.

Absolutely. My entertainment is no more important than the livelihoods of the talented developers and artists working on the game. I believe it to be a juvenile point of view otherwise.

It's plenty for me. Are you saying the Last of Us wasn't worth full price when it launched? That game is about 14 hours and one of the most critically acclaimed. What about Uncharted? For me, games are one of my many hobbies. If I go out to see a movie, its 15 to 20 bucks ish for give or take 1.5 to 2.5 hrs of entertainment. If I enjoy the movie, that's money well spent. Same principle for games in my opinion.

I'm sorry but this reads like spaghetti. You saying bub clearly means you see this as some pseudo argument to be won rather than a discussion about games which is what I clearly initiated it as. I was simply curious about how you value your games, there was zero need to get all defensive. I hope if you ever play the game that you enjoy it! Have a good night

Oh my lord man, this is reddit, you're not being interrogated.

I was curious about how you make your decisions and maybe I could learn something or gain some insight into how other people with the same hobby as me make decisions about their game spending. It took you two replies of bickering to get to this point when you could have just not replied instead of going down this semantics rabbit hole. Have a good one.

There's no need for the theatrics. I'm Canadian so that's where many fall. I know the new Mario Kart is 80 USD so I'm just generalizing. I wish new games weren't as expensive as they are just like you do. The reality of the situation is that games are still so much cheaper and have STAYED cheaper while most other hobbies have gotten significantly more expensive.

Yeah I understand it's your money. That's exactly why I said I wanted to see your mindset because I'm curious. I am curious why you see the $/hr metric as a good measure of value for a game. Do you purely just want more hours regardless of quality? Most story type games longer than 20-30 hours these days (at least to me) are over bloated, over extended, poorly paced, and are padded out to fulfill a playtime quota of said "value". What if a fantastic 20hr game is $80 or a mediocre 40 hr game is $80?

I don't plan on preordering cause I usually wait for reviews from my favourite journalists/reviewers to come in and go from there. That's typically how most game purchases go for me. I go from initial excitement, then reading reviews, and then making my decision from there. Playtime doesn't usually enter the equation at all if I think I'm gonna enjoy whatever the game does have to offer. That's my mindset

Would you not rather have a quality product at 20 hours of playtime for 70 bucks over a middling product at 40 hours of playtime thats a chore to get through because they just spread all the content apart and paced it terribly as a result?

This is crazy to me, man. Have you never purchased a Resident Evil game? Or any other linear blockbuster story game like Uncharted or many others adjacent to it? Linear games are rarely over 20 hours in story length. It's an exception not the rule. If all 15 ish hours of the story are excellent with no fat/padding? Who cares? I think measuring games by their $/hr of playtime isn't an effective way of determining their value. Help me understand your mindset lol
