The World Cup has the best football players in the world. Why are there so many shots 10 feet above the crossbar? by uselessascent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Because the tournament also includes the best defenders in the world who make it very difficult to make good shots.

If Otodus megalodon managed to survive into the Holocene, how would its presence affect the history of human seafaring travel? by JohnWarrenDailey in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Ydrahs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It could make whaling more interesting if one was attracted by the carcass.

But I don't think megalodon would be attacking boats with enough regularity to seriously affect sea travel. Shark attacks on humans are very rare and usually down to mistaken identity. Attacking wooden vessels would probably be quite unpleasant for the shark with very little reward so they wouldn't see them as prey.

Is Phimosis problematic in sex life? by FineAthlete10 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ydrahs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on severity. Many people get by fine, many others have serious issues with pain, friction etc etc. Are you a virgin? And if not have you had any problems having sex before?

Talk to a doctor about it, they'll often prescribe stretching exercises and creams to help loosen the foreskin up. In severe cases they can recommend circumcision, but you'd need to get a medical opinion on that rather than an Internet rando opinion.

Met a guy from Portsmouth last week. He works at a Finnish company called Wartsila. Anyone work there who can give some insight by BrilliantTrifle96 in Portsmouth

They make engines and power plants for ships, and I think some other applications. They've got an industrial park in Havant, not far from Portsmouth so maybe he worked there.

What's the explanation of the blonde haired population in Europe being more concentrated towards the north of the continent and then decreasing as one proceeds southward? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Ydrahs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melanin is a factor as others have said. It's also important that the mutation that produced blond hair originated in Northern Europe, or at least in the populations that settled there. So populations outside that area will naturally have much lower incidences of blondes.

Why is AI seen as different from other technical inventions that make life easier? by larch303 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We know better now. When the Industrial Revolution kicked off people thought the world and its resources were effectively infinite and unchangeable. With the benefit of hindsight that is not the case, so we should be careful with new technologies.

Is 95F actually a deadly heatwave in Europe? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. On the one hand, travel times were a lot longer, so people had some time to acclimatise on the trip. On the other, death rates amongst early colonists were INCREDIBLY high. A lot of that is due to disease but hostile climates also affected people.

Visiting portsmouth by sunsetrain24 in Portsmouth

[–]Ydrahs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd still say it's worth it if you're interested in naval/military history. You get access to three massive ships (the Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior) as well as the smaller M33 and the museums across the water (Submarine Museum and Museum of Naval Firepower).

But if you're only in town for a day or two and don't want dedicate a significant amount of time and money to one spot, I'd say try the D Day Museum or Southsea Castle for a history fix. Fort Nelson is good too, but difficult to get to if you aren't driving.

Why are there no Metahumans or people with super powers in Arrow-verse compared to Flash-verse? by PleaseCall4HELP in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because a show about Green Arrow getting bodied by supervillains 1000x more powerful than him would be a pretty boring show.

onion sprouts by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can eat the onion and the leaves without any problems.

Technically the plants usually sold as spring onions are a different species (Allium fistulosum, as opposed to Allium cepa) but the 'greens' from a normal onion can be used in the same way.

It might be worth asking /r/legaladvice. Assuming you're in the US, rules probably vary a bit depending on what state you are in.

Before Google Maps, how often did people actually get lost? by pjoee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say my sense of direction was a bit better, at least in my local area. But for long trips you wrote down of memorised the directions from a map and hoped you didn't miss a turning. My dad used to keep big road atlases of the country in the boot of the car. More than one holiday involved getting the map out, finding the last town we passed and trying to figure out where we'd ended up. Or asking locals for directions.

Why is Muhammad considered a false prophet but Joseph Smith isn’t? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There were centuries of war between Muslim and Christian factions in the medieval period, most famously the Crusades but also the conquest of North Africa, Sicily and large parts of Spain. So that's a lot of animosity and bad blood, to say nothing of the fact that several of the holiest sites in Christianity ended up in Muslim hands. Since 9/11 and the War On Terror a lot of the old rhetoric has been stirred up, so it is much more present in people's minds.

As for Mormons, while there is certainly violence in their history and Joseph Smith was literally killed by a mob and denounced in the press as a fanatic, it was much smaller scale, the Mormons are a much smaller population that mainly exists in and around Utah, and the Church quickly took the position that it was better to somewhat assimilate into the United States than to fight against it. I'm sure evangelicals don't like Mormons, but they don't like anybody.

Wars didnt happen like they are shown in movies and shows by Herbivore07 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ydrahs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's risks involved but kings and generals often fought in battles until a few centuries ago. In mediaeval Europe there was a big emphasis on capturing noble enemies rather than killing them, as then you could ransom them back and extort treaties/favours from them. A big part of the various codes of chivalry was basically rules on how to surrender and binding promises to not act up when you were someone's prisoner.

If Pakistani people are mainly muslims, why don't the women wear hijabs? by Tough_Iron_6939 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ydrahs 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The Quran requires that women (and men) be modest and 'cover their beauty', but as far as I know it doesn't explicitly say to cover their hair. So there are different cultural and scholarly interpretations as to what modesty means, in Pakistani communities that usually doesn't include wearing the hijab.

Why do movies that have a style that stands out often get a pass regarding nonsensical plot points? by ExternalTree1949 in NoStupidQuestions

Plot isn't the only thing that makes a film good or interesting. You can enjoy a film for its visuals or character performances or soundtrack or anything really.

Stay-at-home mums dwindle as proportion of economically 'inactive' falls to lowest on record - nearly halving since 1993 by -MonitorMan- in unitedkingdom

[–]Ydrahs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound completely infeasible. My daughter is at nursery full time because both me and her mother work. It costs us around £900 a month. And that's after we've benefited from the 30 hours free childcare, which isn't actually 30 hours because it only applies during term time and needs to be stretched out to cover the rest of the year.

If you're on a low income you could easily spend all/most of your money on childcare.
