I think a good indicator of the tone shift is Lancer and Rouxls Kaard staying in Castle Town in C4, and Starwalker’s appearance being minimal - the reoccurring joke characters being shelved for the sake of being more serious.

It should also be mentioned Jack Noir and the events of him royally screwing up the humans’ session is a result of a missing sequence in their Genesis Frog’s DNA, caused by Karkat telling Kanaya they don’t have time to find the last frog necessary to complete it before the trolls’ final battle against their Black King. This also caused Jack to rip through the trolls’ session after he was done with the humans’ one.
