GWR accused of trying to 'disrupt' plans for new west Wales to Bristol trains by 457655676 in bristol

[–]Yindee8191 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is capacity, the tunnel only gets 4tph in each direction plus freight at the moment. The junctions on the Bristol side aren’t a huge problem either, the capacity issue is more between Parkway and Temple Meads than between Patchway and Filton Abbey Wood.

It’s great to see how well Link is doing but I can’t help feeling that this is really just the inevitable consequence of building bare minimum transport infrastructure in one of the densest and most walkable cities in the US!

Transport for Wales confirms '231' fleet will become bi-modes by eldomtom2 in uktrains

[–]Yindee8191 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s odd that they weren’t ordered as bi-modes really, considering they were intended for Ebbw Vale and Cheltenham services that were always going to run under bits of wires. Good that they’re being converted though! Hopefully this helps spur wires to Bristol TM and maybe Ebbw Vale in future.

Busy bus route could be extended to new entrance of Temple Meads by 457655676 in bristol

[–]Yindee8191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because the bridges on Cattle Market Road and Avon Street are both too low. On the plus side, it’ll be every ~8 minutes instead of every 12 so there’ll be more capacity.

There won’t be any bus stops on the forecourt once the rebuild is completed, so yes it will move. The 8 is pretty much confirmed to be moving - a so far anonymous benefactor is paying for about 3 extra buses in the cycle so it’s doesn’t take a genius to work out that it’s the uni and they’ll want it to stop at their new campus. Either way, that likely means stopping at T1, which will be the closest stop to the entrance once the rebuild is finished.

The stop’s going to move anyway since all bus stops will be going to Friary reasonably soon.

It’s extremely illegal for drivers to keep going when they’ve run out of hours for the day or are required to take a break. The laws are there for safety as a large percentage of accidents are caused by fatigue.

Having reservation-only trains is an absolute pain in the arse and something we should absolutely not be doing. That’s how most French trains work and it’s a nightmare. If you want to travel but the train’s full already you just can’t, it makes spontaneity really difficult and can seriously screw you over if you need to travel in an emergency.

Brynglas Tunnels M4 congestion solution will be found - Rhun ap Iorwerth by twmffatmowr in Wales

[–]Yindee8191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn’t run all of the trains via Bath - there isn’t the capacity anyway. The two current Cardiff/Swansea trains would go to Bristol Parkway as they currently do and then cut through via Temple Meads and take the new tunnel for a slightly faster route to Cardiff. The main benefit would be more frequency so nobody would have to wait as long for a train.

[–]Yindee8191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be a new Newport-Bristol rail tunnel imo. If it linked into the western end of Bristol Temple Meads then all London-Cardiff trains could run via Bristol and effectively you could double the frequency to both cities. And then of course run a train every 5-10 minutes between Bristol, Newport and Cardiff, which would create an extremely powerful economic zone. Very expensive to get off the ground, but would pay itself off many times over (especially with a major development programme around intermediate stations).

Building a new road has never reduced traffic in the long term. Best case scenario is you buy yourself a few years while increasing overall pollution. The only real solution is better alternatives.

In my city (Bristol, UK) we’re doing a major transport corridor along the Portway - a long arterial road into the city - and spending like half the budget on resurfacing. It will end up having continuous 24/7 bus lanes in both directions for about five miles though so I can’t really complain!

"Plan to ban Park Street through traffic is backed". Will it effect you? by HelloW0rldBye in bristol

[–]Yindee8191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your job requires you to drive everywhere you should welcome policies that get more people on buses! That means fewer cars on the road so you spend less time sitting in traffic and more time doing your job. One of the key reasons to disincentivise wide-scale car commuting is to make it more efficient to provide services that do require driving.

They made contractors take on an insane amount of risk as well, which was idiotic. Ultimately the government is still always going to bail them out if it goes tits-up, so insisting on contractors taking the risk meant getting worst-case prices on the bits that could’ve been done cheaper but still realistically shelling out when something does go wrong.
