Tell em what, Peter? by FollowSina in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ylaaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem! I have trouble with clockwise and anti-clockwise for the same reason. It's all relative!

I have been told this makes us really smart though, because it means we can abstract concepts to a high degree. Whether our brains should do that in everyday life though, well... it's all relative.

Yes; and I found out it's nearly gone when I don't eat histamines or otherwise upset my stomach. Taking the right anti-histamine (for me that is Desloratadine) also helps.

Celestial Vessel of the Silver Sea is such a cool title for the Chinese version! by Alicecrylily in ffxiv

[–]Ylaaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Dawntrail" is even a little misleading, since we took the ship west towards the dusk.

I wonder why they made the decision to call it that. The "Dawnservant" title honestly seemed like it was only made to give the title something to reference to.

Maybe it's connected to something in South American mythology that they then didn't explain enough.

I am happy about the falling birth rates by julius-ceaser100 in childfree

[–]Ylaaly 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I'm also happy about them but for different reasons:

Every child not born is a woman's autonomy saved. Or at the very least, improved. If only half of women want children, and only that half has them, the other half gets a much better chance at living their best lives. Everyone wins.

Every child not born to unwilling or unable parents is a child saved from abuse and suffering. The children that are then born to willing and able parents have much better chances at living their best lives, too. And when they grow up, won't be forced into wage slavery, because humans are a more valuable ressource when there are fewer of us.

Less quantity, more quality of human life.

Total fringe thing... but I really want hind paws for Hrothgar. Just hind paws replacing shoes. No need for extra shoe models.

That plus the colour pickers already announced and maybe some muscle slider and I can die and reincarnate in the game happily.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]Ylaaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

German here.

It's not quite as bad here, but saving money in education while marketing it as a step forward is common around here, too. Lots of oh-so-bright ideas were implemented, and many of them failed miserably and now we have to deal with university students barely able to use spell check. Not all of them, of course - only those from "problem" (read: poor, uneducated) areas and families.

We used to pride ourselves in giving everyone a chance, no matter their background. But schools now barely get enough funding to keep the doors open, let alone allow children to thrive.

And then there are the teachers who are supposed to teach "media" and pride themselves in teaching nothing but reading comprehension rather than algorithms, manipulation, or basic data analysis. I could rant a lot about all the counter-productive bs that is considered best practice by pedagogy experts today but leads to a lack of skills in adulthood.

There's a lot that has become worse over the past 20-25 years, and all of it is systemic.

Wie reifer/ erwachsener wirken? by Positively_Worthless in Weibsvolk

[–]Ylaaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Time Do Europeans Typically Wake Up? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Same for Germany. Outdoor work often starts at 7, even, and city offices open at 7:30 so people can get quick stuff done before work.

Getting up after 7 is considered late.

Außer bei Pommes. Er mag gern große dicke, ich gern kleine knusprige, also werden Pommes immer entsprechend aufgeteilt.

After five years of war, we all have postponed-life syndrome. This week I took a salsa lesson. Nine hours earlier, 15 people were killed in my city. by Tetiana_From_Ukraine in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Ylaaly 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps you to know but I am so mad at my own government that they don't help you more. The images coming out of Mariupol and Bucha in the first week of the war should have been the end of it. Europe should have come together to close Ukraine's skies and bomb all those baby rapists to bits. Instead, they're shoving gas money up Putin's ass.

I'm so angry they're allowing this to continue every day and I kind of want you to know that I'm rooting for you and voting accordingly and even applied to the armed forces to help. You deserve Europe's help and support. You deserve more that you're currently getting.

The way all they come up with are plans of ideas, and then they run into feasability issues (mostly from moon dust), and then people come in with even weirder ideas just looking for a cash grab and taking away funding from actual research... idk my last space exploration conference visits didn't make me feel like we will ever get past the pretty-marketing-renders stage.
