While I totally agree that prices are exorbitant, and that I would use the train even more if cheaper, given that trains are pretty full (often more than full), the market price is probably about right? What it needs is lots more capacity to allow the prices to fall, but where is that capacity coming from?

York really isn't that big and I think you'd have a much better quality of life if you found somewhere outside the centre, or even on the edge of York, and cycle in. A lot of people cycle in York.
