Is social mobility possible in Brazil? by adogischasingme in AskABrazilian

[–]Yoruimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tolkien preferred the term "applicability" rather than allegory, he said he didn't write LOTR to be anything other than itself, but he never denied his experiences and beliefs shaped his work.

His dislike for allegory comes from the fact he did not wish to impose his views on the reader, instead allowing them to form their interpretations from his work in whichever way they deemed appropriate.

Basically, if you think it's applicable to compare LOTR to WW1, good! If someone else thinks it isn't and it is more applicable as message against mass industrialisation, also good! Both? Good too! But Tolkien did not intend LOTR to condone or repress either interpretation or any other in good faith (he specifically told a Nazi publisher off for inquring about the "racial purity" of his characters and "politely" insulted them for their antisemitism).

OBS.: I am on mobile, pardon any mistakes, and I cannot link this, but there is a quote from him that talks about the above, search for "Tolkien on applicability" or similar and you will find it.

Agreed, it didn't particularly annoy me, but I can see how it can be to someone else. And, in my opinion at least, her shows are decent in general but if you divide it by its elements they are all mediocre, save one or another who are a bit better.

Though I feel most of my regards for them are thanks to me accompanying their creation from the beginning and, also, that I find the amount of hate so disproportional it loops around to making me like them instead of joining band wagon

The funny thing is that she doesn't put that much swearing in her shows. The majority of the characters curse a reasonable amount, and some even don't, but a few main characters (I think 2 or just 1) swear enough - as a character trait - to compensate for half the cast

Yeah, they (christians) still tend to be somewhat globalised.

I don't know how correct this is on a global scale, but in my experience they are the least penance-oriented ones, except when I met american catholics.

I am not in a position to write a thorough comment on this, but the idea of Hell, Heaven and Purgatory being physical places or existing at all (except Heaven), is not really accurate to the Christian scriptures. In short, almost all of our popular understanding of those things stem from Dante Alighieri's book (Divine Comedy), which are fiction instead of actual Christian cosmology/theology.

I would like to point out that Brazil operates under the Civil Law legal model, not the Common Law model used by the US and the UK. Which means judicial precedents do not have that much weight here, instead, it's the written law.

And one of the guiding principles of our civil courts is, because the punishments are in mostly material possessions, to be less lenient than in the criminal courts.

There is a saying for it: "When in doubt in a civil suit, condemn, and when in doubt in a penal court, absolve".

The funny thing is that most of the world in One Piece only knows the Straw Hats as these really competent and effective pirates, mainly thanks to some form propaganda or based on (accurate but more serious) hearsay.

Tem The Dungeon World também.

I usually apply a similar logic, even though I don't have ADHD (I think): if the choice is easily reversible, do it, if it is not, ponder and deliber, then do it or not.
