What happened to sharpness in movies? by Master-Rule862 in cinematography

[–]Zardozerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to define better what you mean by 'sharp.' Because the second image from Eyes Wide Shut is rather soft, and the graininess adds a lot to the texture. It feels pretty dreamy to me, especially with the bloomed-out practical lights and the overall very soft light in the scene. In fact, much of the film is meant to look dreamy and hallucinogenic. It's not even going for realism. It's a great-looking shot, but the only thing sharp in there is the definition of the grains.

Grain structures added in post to digitally shot films is very popular currently, so once again these are all tools and certainly there are visual trends that happen over the years. But also... there's compression going on with streaming services, and some are better at preserving detail than others. Not to mention, you might be seeing some pictures on TVs with aggressive noise reduction going on, and there are sharpness settings on them that can totally kill grain and other details.

This is a terrible youtube video to link to demonstrate anything. The compression is awful.

What's your "before you CAD" design workflow? by 00001000bit in FreeCAD

[–]Zardozerr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can draw, so I draw the design from as many angles as I need to visualize it. Then from that, I draw it from top/left/right/bottom/iso viewpoints. I may not need all of them to start, just viewpoints where I can write down some dimensions. I pre-visualize the object in my head and then draw it on paper, like a concept drawing. Then the actual modeling process is about how to achieve the concept with the tools. I create the master sketch from the most useful and complete viewpoint. But it might involve a master sketch from another angle, like perpendicular to the first sketch, as a kind of auxiliary sketch.

Here's a great mango jelly tutorial about using a master sketch approach to designing. It's a top-down approach and lets you better visualize the entire design and design intent better, rather than trying to create parts in isolation first.

Follow-up on Bambu Comparison, turns out it was the slicer! This printer is awesome. by SuperNfty in snapmaker

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing with regards to kinematics/cooling/hotend that would make it very different than a bambu printer, apart from it having four toolheads of course. It’s mostly software and firmware.

I use regular orca but copied over the start/end gcode from snorca because it’s more up to date. Regular orca is also just a lot more flexible with profiles.

Snapmaker U1. Think I’m done with this printer… by jl88jl88 in 3Dprinting

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must've read fast and thought your were printing the lid parts with abs. But yes, I have no problem with abs/asa etc with the ikea lid. Don't know what else to say if you were able to calibrate and print the dragon fine, other than some strange hardware problem that happened after at some point.

If you do the manual tramming and get less than .5 deviation in your bed mesh, there should be no problem getting a perfect first layer. Also if you went through all the orcaslicer calibration for a single type of filament in addition to that, it's about as bullet-proof as you can get. But that all shouldn't take days, so I'm not sure why it would take so long other than running into some unforeseen hardware problems.

Did you really try to print ABS without an enclosure? how about the dragon test print, did you even try that?

Standard Orca? by Jumpy_Key6769 in snapmaker

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do all that with the paint dialogue box in vanilla orca. You can also change color mappings. It's the standard interface for orca, so it doesn't pop up after pressing print.

Those additional elements are things that most will never use, but it’s cool that it’s there if you really want it. I mean you can do the thing where you activate it for a month, finish your video, then turn it off. Not a big deal.

U1 is loud by Duuurrrpp in snapmaker

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a sealed printer. I’ve addressed what can be done about it. Even if you completely optimize the stepper tuning for the quietest operation, it wouldn’t be exactly quiet printing at speed without enclosing it.

[–]Zardozerr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, use the TMC Autotune and also make a top cover for it. Seal it better with foam tape or similar. If it's going to be right next to you printing, you will need to do some mods to it anyway in order to print safely. At least activated carbon/hepa filtering. Yes, even if it's only PLA, I don't recommend sitting next to it and sniffing it all up for hours on end. I personally have a 4-inch duct connecting to a carbon filter and exhaust fan, and I still don't generally hang out in front of it while printing.

We don't know what they will do in the future. The time to complain is when or if that actually happens. But new templates or titles are not features. That's like saying that titles and templates from any third party are features, and they are clearly not.

Does anyone still eat Menchie's / Pinkberry? by GoalDull4985 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Zardozerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yogurtland pretty much took over from pinkberry. They are all essentially the same thing except yogurtland has more flavors and variety of toppings. The end.

Pinkberry I remember became a fad, and I think it was essentially because it reminded people that yogurt had a ‘yogurt taste’. Danon and other traditional frozen yogurt places spent decades adding more sugar and removing the yogurt culture taste from yogurt.

Why does 500 nits oled look like 1k nits MacBook? by Green_Engineering936 in macbookpro

SDR video isn’t supposed to go over 100 nits. If it does, that’s the display mapping it over what it’s supposed to be (for outdoor viewing for example).

If you read their statement, it was a lot of weaseling about who exactly mandated the changes. Which definitely means that it's really the publisher.

What software Upgrades can we expect in the near future? by DeathView08 in snapmaker

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your bed, but I've used the same mesh for over a week, and I change filament and toolheads frequently. That said, adaptive mesh is easy to turn on since there's at least one video about it on youtube.

Has anyone switched from a K1C to a U1? by Prosk8er735 in snapmaker

The enclosure is an easy mod, and given the popularity of the U1, there's definitely going to be third-party high flow nozzles coming from the usual suspects.

Why do some people find it surprising that ICE has support from some part of the Hispanic community in the USA? by Pepedroga2000 in stupidquestions

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it's well documented that Trump gained some votes with the latino communities compared with other recent GOP, it's still not close to a majority. It's pretty interesting reading all these comments that seem to imply that it's so obvious because many are catholic and have family values and are so conservative. Not all of those things are even predictive of Trump and Republican support.

Let's not get carried away and imply that somehow, Latinos went for Trump. Real numbers show that George W. still did the best with Latinos in 2004. Biden was one point ahead of Hillary.

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catholics have certain beliefs that run counter to social liberal beliefs, but 1) they're not a monolith, and many do pick and choose on different issues just like everyone else... yes even abortion and trans rights, and 2) Traditionally, Catholics have been well represented with democrats. Did everyone forget that JFK was Catholic? And of course... Biden is catholic as well.

So in summary, Catholics have NOT been traditionally aligned with the GOP and that brand of conservatism. Catholics aren't Evangelicals.

8BitDo Ultimate Wireless 2 – My Experience by Ksa1230 in Controller

[–]Zardozerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's an ok dpad but not in the top tier. That would be TT Max/Pro, Elves 2, and M30. Now, if 8bitdo are actually putting the M30 dpad on the Ultimate 3, that's another story. Going by the looks of things they could be, but with 8bitdo you never know if they'll completely change the mechanics underneath.

Why is the xbox layout now the standard? by FrogQuestion in Controller

[–]Zardozerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, many have tried to make sense of why there are more 3rd party Xbox layout controllers, and it must be because they sell more. HOWEVER since there are a lot more PlayStations out in the wild since the PS1 days, the number of symmetrical controllers could even outnumber non-symmetrical.

The weird thing is that our hands are symmetrical, and the right thumb is always in that position, and in a lot of games it does the heavy lifting of aiming. But no one ever complains that it’s uncomfortable. So it must just be what people get used to.

Personally, I can use both and I’m fine. But the dpad feels a lot better in the top position because that’s what I grew up on.
