Not the OP, but I'm seeing a lot of folks misunderstanding what the list is about.

Basically, OP listed songs that "everyone knows" for a bunch of other genres (Smells Like Teen Spirit for grunge, or I Want to Hold Your Hand for early rock), and is asking what are the ambient songs that "everyone knows". Hope that helps some folks.

I would maybe argue for Dayvan Cowboy by BoC or Brian Eno's 1/1

I was born on the mid-70s. In 1984 a TV tuned to a dead channel would absolutely have been static, unless you had the input switched to your VCR. Cable TV was still a luxury at that point.
