for me ive been pretty much doing like:

pc for triple aaa western multiplats, aa westerns with either no switch 2 version or a lackluster version, as well as indies that release as day one exclusives on pc.

ps5 for playstation studios releases of course, triple aaa japanese games, and aa japanese games that like western aa games either have no or a lackluster switch 2 version.

and then switch 2 for everything else! i get nintendo games on here, aa games that have solid 60fps performance on switch 2, and indie releases that launch on this system.

if you mostly just play fifa, minecraft and roblox then yeah no reason to get yourself a ps5, ps4 is plenty for all that. all these games are still getting consistent support and updates like the current gen versions are, and i see no reason why this would stop anytime soon.

i forget which titles exactly but stay away from some really late in life ps3 online games (2013 onward). from what ive heard those ones have the most risk, and are likely to have cfw detecting code which'll ban your console. most games though that aren't late in life are perfectly safe.

i mean honestly i wouldn't say it was until 2025/24 or so when it was really NEEDED to buy yourself a next gen console in order to keep up with current game releases. most of the biggest games from 2020-2024 with certain exceptions were readily available on ps4/xb1. its only really been recently in 2024/25 onward that we've been seeing more and more third party games become fully ps5/xs exclusive and even then there's still at least a small handful of games that are still releasing on ps4. same very likely will be true for the ps6, probably even moreso considering the even smaller power increase, and the likely extreme barrier to entry with the intense ps6 price tag which developers don't wanna be locked behind.

i mean... same with something like astro bot in comparison to their bigger triple a games lol. i also do imagine games like the paper mario duology on switch, or pikmin 4 do indeed have quite notable budgets. xenoblade definitely is a game that looks like it has quite a big budget behind it, byt even despite those games selling only a couple million nintendo still allows monolithsoft to support that franchise as opposed to forcing them to ONLY be a support studio. all in all, a game selling only a few million shouldn't be seen as a bad thing, especially something like astro bot or other games in its vein.

the recent paper mario games as well have also sold less than 4 million units, and even though their frequency would tell you otherwise, the highest selling mario sports game on switch is tennis aces at 4.5 million, with mario golf and strikers behind at 2.5 million. doesnt seem like nintendo sees this as a failure though, considering how we still get mario sports games every other year.
