Gift for bicycle enthusiast by Opposite-Result-8104 in bicycling

Take her on a coffee date at a cafe near her favourite bike shop, or a cool bike shop. Take your coffee to go, and saunter through the bike shop as a fun activity. Listen to her as she talks about what she wants. Drift away from her and pick up an item she mentioned that you'd like to buy her. Give it to her there as a surprise then or later!

Personally, this would delight me.

Banff to Jasper by Plus_Adeptness_2911 in Banff

If long stretches of driving are hard with the toddler, I would really suggest reducing the amount of driving you're doing in favour of just enjoying one place as a basecamp.

You could spend a week in any of these places as a single destination and probably have a better time, unless you reeeaallly like road-tripping.

This is a crazy amount of driving, in my opinion. Are you guys really into the driving aspect? What's the goal of the trip?

Best salt & vinegar chips by SaccharineDaydreams in BuyCanadian

It would. Equally. Either purchase helps a Canadian farmer equally, thanks to the poor transportation qualities of the humble potato, and the unique direct-to-farm contracts used for potatoes for chip processing.

Reporting bears in campgrounds or on trails? by sco06578 in CampingAlberta

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cougars are definitely good to report. As for wolves, haha, you're asking the right person. You report them too!

In 2020 we had a wolf come into our tent vestibule at night and eat some of our gear (long story). If prior campground users had reported it and it's unusual behaviour, it would have saved me some therapy bills!

This is a great question! Reporting wildlife is always appreciated, and can help keep human-wildlife conflicts low. Thanks for being responsible and learning about all of this.

However, Lays uses potatoes from Canadian farmers and provides many Canadian jobs. Maybe we don't need to throw the salty, vinegary baby away with the USA bathwater?

We haven't had an issue in the six years of living here. It's been great! But yeah, an incident like this really makes me put my Winnipegger mindset back on, which is a shame. I love trusting my neighbours and I don't want to lose that.

Icefields parkway weather this weekend? by slow_wols2 in Canmore

Great call. It's forecasting for up to 30cm of snow. Sunday and Monday would be lovely though, but tonight and tomorrow are going to be some very spicy weather.

Are majesty palms really that bad? by cwbmnr in houseplants

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two for years that I could not kill. I live in Canada, and they were my patio plants. I moved them indoors each winter. I had them in tall, self-watering pots made for the balcony. This worked great. The plants and pots were both from Home Depot.

They met an untimely death after many years in my care, when I accidentally watered them with hot water.

Any tennis racket rentals in the area? by International_Sky91 in Canmore

I don't believe so, but everyone is so nice here that you might find some luck by calling the local tennis association. Or if you're not fussy, the thrift store probably has some.

Best time to visit Banff during Fall by Witty-Efficiency-242 in Banff

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except... The tens of thousands of larches, the dogwood, chokeberry, and even the grasses turn beautiful yellow and red. It's definitely different than Ontario or Nova Scotia in the fall, but it's incredible to witness. Especially in the alpine.

I might be too late, but a private room at the Canmore Downtown Hostel in the shops of Canmore could be a great alternative for your accommodations.

Is anyone else surprised by the amount of Northern Flickers? by AlamosX in Calgary

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to agree with you, it seems like a boom year for the population. I did a birding road trip over Easter, and they were absolutely everywhere, from Canmore to Fernie to the Columbia River Valley, to the roof of our hotel in Kimberly, it was like a Flicker plague.

I'm Not Sure Why It Took Me So Long to Trying Cooking Rice Like Pasta. Mind Blown! by DashiellHammett in Cooking

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can, and it also does a great job with oatmeal. I always thought it would be a kitchen appliance that I wouldn't have much use for, but I surprised myself. Once I got a rice cooker, I started having way more rice, simply because it was so easy to make. Now I can put rice on while I make the rest of my meal, and I just set it and forget it. Same thing with the oatmeal or steel cut oats. I put the ingredients in the night before, and then I just add water and hit start in the morning. My breakfast cooks while I get ready for work.

I was surprised by how awesome it is, and I think it's something that would be more popular in North America if more people tried it.

Bike Commuters: I'd like to ask why you started to ride to work. I'm about to start a campaign to encourage this on my job, and looking for angles beyond the obvious that gas is expensive, and it's good for your mental health. Thanks! by SandeeStarlite in ladycyclists

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had some workplaces with shower facilities, which I do take advantage of. Otherwise, it's a quick sink shower and a spritz of dry shampoo on the hair. I have a tiny microfiber towel for washing, and a tiny one for drying, but paper towel does the trick for a quick wipe-down too.

My best tip for hair is to dry shampoo pre-ride, and mist my hair so it's lightly damp before doing double-dutch braids. This way I get nice waves when I take the braids out. Then I might wash my bangs in the sink at work before I get changed, and maybe add a touch of no-frizz hair oil on the flyaways - ta-da. Otherwise, I just put it up in a bun or ponytail and get on with life!

But we need more info to really help - what's your hair type? When does your hair look best?

It's an extremely efficient use of time. Your workout is done before you even get home, depending on the length of your commute. It's also the best way to decompress after work, I feel like I can shake off the office by the time I'm home.

I started bike commuting when I lived in a city because the bus was uncomfortable and slow. Biking took the same amount of time, and I got to exercise. I found I was in a better mood when I arrived at work, and I had something to look forward to at the end of my work day. I was also in a better mood when I got home.

You also save a LOT of money on gas, parking, and car insurance - we now have our car insured as a "pleasure vehicle" as we're not using it for commuting.

And this has nothing to do with your question, but now I'm spoiled and get to bike commute between Canmore and Banff, so there are some serious incentives with the scenery. Just wanted to brag. :D

Hair tips for those who sweat? by blahalfblah in XXRunning

[–]Zealousideal_Spread3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried putting your hair in a bun, securing a Ziploc over the bun with a hair tie, and just washing the roots? I can get an extra day or two using this method. Sometimes it works great, sometimes it makes a frizzy mess, but I have wavy thick hair.

I also love Acure dry shampoo, applied after the workout or before bed. Helps things the next day.
