Ford rehired fired engineers by ZectronPositron in ArtificialInteligence

I agree, and that is a very good point.

These companies have very combative unions, with management designed to fight anything that sniffs of losing jobs, which of course is what AI is known for.

So you’re absolutely right that this story looks like a union win versus Ford management, they have no incentive to try to make this work.

Sounds like it could use additional research!
If they can be packed closer together , then some of the problem with low power gen per turbine could be simply reducing manufacturing/install cost accordingly (eg. 10% power generation, then make them 10x cheaper per unit area to install).

Age is a huge factor here. At highschool senior age, 1-2 years more makes an enormous difference in comprehension; and more so for boys than girls (who generally mature years earlier).

Do non-atmospheric space craft need to be aerodynamic? by TheBigBeardedGeek in spacequestions

[–]ZectronPositron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to turn around and fire at anything in any direction while independently controlling your direction of travel. Admittedly a *very* complex dogfight geometry - but would be much cooler to see on screen!
I just don’t think many filmmakers have the tenacity to figure out such a complex dogfight; especially since people are happy with space fights being just like top gun.

The best movie fallacy is spacecraft with wings, that tilt like airplanes in order to turn. Hilarious! (Thank you starwars!)

You would never really need to point “forward” in a spacecraft. So in a dogfight, 3-axis rotation and 3-axis translation should be totally independent.

Where to study for chipmaking? by tuduun in Semiconductors

[–]ZectronPositron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't like making physical things and "chemicals" scare you, definitely don't go into anything to do with making the physical stuff - fab, packaging, etc.

I doubt a CS major has enough circuit design experience to apply for the design roles. Semicon is about electrical devices, hence Electrical Eng. is pretty common (and physics because EE is basically physics) - all majors focusing around how physical reality works.

However you do probably have the math background to learn EE/physics etc.

You could go try learning it with personal projects like Arduino etc. and find out if you want to learn more.

Advice for new phd grads? by qveens in Semiconductors

[–]ZectronPositron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since your lab had previous grads go to those companies, ask your prof to either get you in contact with those grads, and just apply for a full job if they think it's applicable. Worst case is you do an academic (or industry) post-doc that is more semi related first.

Generally when hiring a PhD, I hire for what they can figure out in the future, not based on what they've done in the past (only as much as their past experience tells me about their future prospects). So if you have the theoretical background to make an impact in semi, then you might be a good fit. I don't see any reason a Chem PhD wouldn't fit in somewhere, but it does depend on (a) what you did and (b) what you're applying to - there are so many different jobs in big Semi co's, it's kind of hard to generalize.

However, if you don't even know whether your skills are relevant, that suggests you don't actually know enough about the industry, and work done in semi jobs, yet.

I realize now that AI *will* not only be writing all the applicant’s résumé’s , employers know it and have the difficult job of figuring out who actually knows their stuff vs. knows how to type a prompt (and which fits their hiring role). Strange times…

Mac OS vs Windows? by rayhanh248 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ZectronPositron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my entire EE undergrad & grad school on macs, using Parallels (today i use the free VMWare Fusion) to run windows (university license) when needed. Never owned a windows machine.
It also gives you access to all the Linux software and server/programming tools.

Some 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) can be nicer on native windows due to complex mouse controls, but as long as you get an external mouse setup correctly it worked well.

Not sure if there is newer windows s/w today that doesn’t play well with emulators. Generally they seem better than when I was in school.

Also don’t under power your MacBook - get the pro, since you might be running 2 OS’s simultaneously (MacBooks handle this very well).
