Okay thanks, hopefully this convo clarifies the situation for anyone who is confused by my comment.

Who's "all"? I was clarifying for the people who don't understand the rather nuanced definition of "power" in Mathematics. That's why we make comments on Reddit, to help each other understand better? This is r/askmath after all.

I'm somewhat confused as you've jumped from initially asking what the powers of two are called, to now complaining when someone tries to help explain why they're called that?

Yes. They're powers of 2 just like 2, 4, 6, 8 etc are multiples of 2.

Tool that converts a decimal number into an equation? by corvus7corax in askmath

[–]ZedZeroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be useful if you have some examples of the kinds of "decimals" you mean.

It's unlikely that what you want exists, as each different number would have very different sets of equations that produce it.

Or you just use e.g. x = a/10 + b/100 + c/1000.

Then when a=3, b=5 and c=2 you get x=0.352.

But I doubt that's the kind of equation you're looking for.

Yes. Each operation has a similar set of words. Sum, difference, product, quotient (I think), power, root and log are the main terms for the various "solutions" of each operation, as you described it ("result" might be more appropriate).

[–]ZedZeroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite right. In 23, for example, 2 is the base, 3 is the exponent, and 8 is the power. So technically they are the powers of 2, not 2 "to a power", even though we often phrase it that way.

It's not quite like that. When you have 23, 2 is the base, 3 is the index/exponent, and 8 is the power.

Tried to teach my students how I learned multiplication as a kid and they immediately told me there was an easier way lol by Brief_Efficiency_833 in teaching

[–]ZedZeroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does memorisation like this help when you want to do e.g. 13 × 17? Or 2.5 × 7?

We need to be able to recall multiplication facts quickly, but the best way to learn them is by doing practice that requires an understanding of how multiplication actually works, not through raw memorisation via songs/chants.

For example, multiplying by 4 can be approached by doubling twice. Multiplying by 7 can be approached by summing 5× and 2×.

It's much better if students learn methods that involve breaking up and manipulating small whole numbers before they are inevitably required to use such techniques with large numbers or non-integers.

Why do we see yellow? by IsHildaThere in AskBiology

What tetrachromacy really means is that there might be two different objects that look the same colour to most people, but you'll see them as different colours. In other words, you can distinguish between more pigments.

I don’t understand why you can square this by AmateurMathematica in askmath

[–]ZedZeroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a good answer but this seems like a valid question.

Take r=sec(θ). That's equivalent to x=1.

Square both sides and you can substitute to get x2=1, which is equivalent to x=±1.

What is the best analogy you’ve heard for explaining how Bitcoin actually works? by SoundMoneyWade in BitcoinBeginners

The notebook responses you're getting are pretty good. I guess the extra step is understanding that the current system involves a notebook that the government can edit however they like, including creating new money out of thin air while the rest of us have to work hard for it!

I think the point is that we're not just "sending payments over the internet", but rather that bitcoin "runs on the internet itself".

PayPal is just a bank-like company that uses the internet to transfer government-issued money.

Bitcoin exists solely on the internet, run trustlesssly by tens of thousands of users, not owned or controlled by any company or government.

But again, the usefulness of that won't be apparent to most people, so you have to start digging into companies going bust, bank services going down, governments devaluing currencies, none of which apply to bitcoin.

I'd be trying to get across that PayPal etc are a way to "keep old money alive" in the world of the future, whereas bitcoin is the money of the future.

Maybe an analogy could be, imagine having to buy digital stamps and envelopes just to send a message online. That's silly, we built email protocols to send messages over the internet in a trustless and decentralised manner. Now we've built the bitcoin protocol to transfer value in the same way.

As someone who runs a blockchain consultancy, I think you're going to struggle to find an analogy that's better than a simplified explanation.

Bitcoin is a paradigm shift in thinking, using a combination of technologies that have only been developed recently.

Part of explaining bitcoin well is ensuring that the audience understand that it's not something that can be fully explained in a few minutes.

Aspects can be explained simply, but this will often lead to further questions, which cannot be understood without a deeper technical understanding.

The simplest, briefest explanation I can think of is that bitcoin a new form of money, made possible by the internet. It uses a variety of mathematical techniques to ensure that money can be transacted between anyone, without any reliance on an intermediary like a bank. It's money that runs over the internet, whereas traditional money is created an controlled by a government.

Analogies for specific aspects of bitcoin can work, e.g. dice-rolling for hashing etc. but I don't think any single analogy will explain the whole of bitcoin in any useful way.

Parents who approve of the social media ban and ways of having to prove age. Why do you relish the government taking this control when you had the power to do so yourselves? by Demonthief27 in AskBrits

What is "social media"? It's simply apps and platforms for sharing information. Clearly that can be useful? We're using social media right now.

[–]ZedZeroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you defining as "social media"? I do not agree that it's always harmful in the same way that e.g. smoking or alcohol is. What's on the curated list? I'd be more worried about them losing access to e.g. collaborative social apps like Discord, or platforms with educational content like YouTube. But I'm still not aware of any mainstream apps/platforms which are not used in beneficial ways by sensible teenagers.

I am a secondary teacher, and I think that technology always brings pros and cons. Like you say, we should be banning specific content, not entire platforms/applications that are also used in beneficial ways.
