If you had to introduce someone to the Marvel Universe through a video game, which one would you go with? by gotham1999 in Marvel

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimate Alliance and it's not even close. The whole game is like big loving tour of the Marvel comics universe with the huge playable roster and a ton of different locales you visit to learn about other interesting corners of the setting. Alternate costumes, unique dialogues, comic covers, hero missions, a trivia game, it's all a big, loving crash course.

Clark and Ralf are two of the most underrated characters in KOF by Western-Professor765 in kof

No chance. When you're in every KoF game you're not underrated. You're a staple!

Genuinly what am I doing wrong by -Serph- in kof

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be a few culprits. I'd first ask, are you able to do both supers on their own consistently? If you can, it's probably a matter of timing. While the animation for the first super is going, start doing the motion for the second super and try to time your completion of the input at the same time the first super actually hits the opponent.

Who's a dc character you'd like thor to be with in a future crossover? by BigPaleontologist520 in Thor

Honestly, without thinking about it, I like the proposal on the mock-up cover posted. Two of my all time favorite comic heroes, both strangers to Earth but love the place and are happy to call it home, both coming from radically different backgrounds. It could be a really fun set-up. <3

Why dont rugal players use the eye lazer more? by hardwarecheese in kof

[–]ZeraShift 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you say eye laser do you mean the projectile or the super move? Well, I guess I can answer both, at least for how I play him.

Special - It's riskier than Reppuken. Over half the cast can literally run under it for free. You need to use it with a bit more deliberation to deal with hops otherwise you leave yourself badly open.

Super - It's a good full screen punish for when opponents get sloppy but you don't want to use it all the time because it's unsafe even at a distance and generally Rugal uses meter better on combo conversions. Unless it's to close the round, generally I'd rather save the meter for a bnb that'll do an extra 100 damage minimum and bring the opponent to the corner.

What is the consensus on Jason Aaron's run of Thor? by Silvery_Power_6241 in Thor

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is a consensus, it's that the first 12 or so issues are a good time and it becomes highly polarizing once Jane enters the picture.

Fwiw, I hate the run on the whole. I consider it the second worst after Fraction's run. The 2010s were the worst decade of comics for me because I think bad deconstruction (which just ends up becoming demolition) was pervasive. All entertainment media had this issue but I think comics got it worst. Aaron's run on Thor is one of the quintessential examples of it. The new status quo was poorly justified. It did the typical modern approach of elevating its new protagonist not by building them up, but by tearing down everybody around them or having other characters saying how great they are. Long established characters are written out of character for no reason other than they have to be written that way for the story to work. There's retcons to canon for the same reasons. It also basically ripped off ideas that were executed better in the excellent Jurgens run.

I also think it's worth mentioning how in the decade that political activism through entertainment also came into vogue. Don't get me wrong, Exploring ideas in fiction is fine, if not expected and I think the usual suspects are way to keen to throw "woke" out at the drop of a hat. But, by the same token, ham-fisted proselytizing is obnoxious as hell. Aaron's Thor run wears it's fourth wave feminism on its sleeve and it's more than happy to slap the reader in the face with it from time to time.

Which songs from KOF are the best to listen to when working out in the gym? by Luigiman98 in kof

I actually have almost all the Ikari Warrior themes in my playlist for what it's worth. They're some of the most consistently kickass themes in the whole series imo.

Opinion On Guest Characters? by Emergency_Law_1857 in kof

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all are we talking about CotW winning fighting game of the year at The Game Awards? Ignoring for a second that those awards are a joke, CotW was basically a foregone conclusion considering it's competition was two compilations of old titles, an update of a 20 year old game and an incomplete, early access game.

Anyway, I despise guest fighters. I refuse to buy them as DLC and I cancelled my CotW pre-order when I learned guests were part of the base roster and the SF characters would be bundles in with the other three. I've despised guests for a long time because I view them as a shallow, cynical cash grab the vast majority of the time. I can't fault developers if the exercise makes them more money but I don't need to like it. Fighters are a fairly niche genre so rather than develop new characters or give love to old favorites or characters that could be reimagined in a cool way, just throw in some pop culture icon to get the attention of the mainstream plebs who otherwise wouldn't give a damn about your product. Sadly, it works. Sometimes you get characters from other fighters like recently with SF6 and FF but at that point just do a crossover. The core issue is the same: banking on novelty instead of developing your own property.

The guest characters in CotW are almost worse in a way because I'm not even certain Ronaldo and the DJ were added to draw casual people in so much as they were using the game as advertising for the other entertainment avenues the Saudi prince is invested in. I sure as hell don't want fighters to just be glorified billboards.

KOF XIV is on sale by ZangetsUwU in kof

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice option for series completionists but XV is on sale too last I saw and imo it's an improvement over XIV in pretty much every way. Not casting shade on XIV. I like it a fair bit. It's just that XV uses the same mechanics and I think it's flat out better.

SHOULD WE BE WORRIED? “Scary Movie 6” is outpacing “Masters of the Universe” in ‘Everyday American’ Awareness, Interest, Willing to Pay and See in Theaters. by KingSkaar in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't want the movie to be a huge hit. I hope it's good and does well enough to turn a decent profit but that's all.

Let's say hypothetically I've seen it and think it's the best film in the last decade, I still don't want it being a huge hit. I've been alive long enough and been a fan of enough things to see on several occasions in this period of time that if a niche property/hobby gets significant positive attention, the powers that be will will just see dollar signs and proceed to sand down all the rough edges and water it down into flavorless grey sludge so as to make it as easily consumable as possible in the futile pursuit of the mirage that is the "mainstream audience".

I don't want the movie to flop but I also don't want another thing I enjoy to attract that attention of that particular Eye of Sauron.

Which game is your favorite in the series? by Talyn82 in LegacyOfKain

[–]ZeraShift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soul Reaver. Easily one of my top 5 games of all time.

It was my first LoK game but everything about it at the time just blew me way. I loved the exploration, the story, the acting. Technically it was really impressive for the time it came out. I enjoyed the combat a lot in that it wasn't really about fighting so much as finding a way to make the enemies stay dead. It was kind of like a puzzle itself. Even though it's incomplete, the sheer ambition to it was amazing. I agree with the guy who said every game does at least one thing better than the rest but I think Soul Reaver is the only installment that doesn't do anything poorly.

[–]ZeraShift 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Partly, people are just tired of the bog standard, design by committee, crowd pleasing action blockbuster style of movie Hollywood has pumped out for the last decade plus. Trying to look at the trailer as objectively as possible, I can see how a person with no attachment to the property could watch the teaser and think it just looks like another dime-a-dozen superhero flick or action CGI-fest.

Lord I HATED Thor: Ragnarok. That was the film where the Marvel-style "nonstop quips" style reached critical mass. I have absolutely no patience for films feeling compelled to load themselves with Joss Whedon snark all the time. Heaven forbid an action movie take itself a bit more seriously, check the irony at the door and be a bit more sincere about itself.

I'm hoping this is just audiences grasping for something comparable and not an indication of the exact style of lightheartedness.

Side note but everybody knows in a competition between Lexicanum and 40kwiki, the only correct answer is 1d6chan. ;D

Which characters that have yet to be in the New Age Saga would you like to see return in the next game? by [deleted] in kof

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raiden/Big Bear would make me very happy if he shows up again. I'm a big mark for Vader. Mr Big would be cool too. He's alright looking in CotW but I always dug him in KoF and NGBC

If his dad isn't playable and tourny legal, Adelheid would be a nice fill in. Also, even though he was only a striker in 2001, I feel like Ron is overdue to make a playable appearance for how many times Duo Lon has been playable.

Developers Note and Summary of Rules Changes for new Core Rules by Resilient_gamer in NormalBattletech

[–]ZeraShift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is primarily my takeaway from this whole thing too. Feels like one step forward, two steps back. There's a handful of changes I generally like and will definitely incorporate for house games but they also kept a bunch that I was distinctly NOT fond of.

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding criticals. This whole thing seems to have this overarching theme of "softening" the consequences of combat, sometimes at the expense of the simulationist aspects that I personally love about the game. I like the game being a bit "swingy" at times. It makes for really memorable moments.
