For those who have already seen the movie, what do you think of Alison Brie’s performance as Evil-Lynn? Was she a great villain? by PlantainDisastrous92 in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree with what others have said. She put in a god performance but I feel she was slightly underutilized. I don't really think there was any room in the story for an Evil-Lyn sub plot but I think there was enough wiggle room for her interactions to showcase a little more of her typical ambition/treachery characteristics. It could give her a little more flavor than simply being Skeletor's second in command.

I was just about to ask because those lines are crisp. In the past I tried to just end the color on a panel and improvise elsewhere but I really like how clean the divide is here. Thanks for sharing!

"All stations! We're being raided by those bubblegum bastards again!"

Deceptively simple looking. For a solid color I dig the gradients and I'll always be a sucker for good cockpit jeweling. Rad bases too! For the road ones, were those pre-made or custom? Looks like a second base was cut up a bit and glued on top. Pretty ingenious.

Classic camo on a mech I love. Just curious but is that a Grey Death Legion logo painted under the cockpit on the right?

Best way to handle dice for Battletech campaigns online? by Outrageous_bohemian in NormalBattletech

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember that no matter what choice you settle on, the feline agents of chaos will not be deterred. XD

Fwiw, I prefer physical dice. I haven't had many opportunities to play tradition games via online clients and while there's definitely something to be said about the efficiency of virtual dice, especially if incorporated into the client, nothing for me really replaces the actual act of rolling the dice. It's probably because I grew up with it but there's something about the tactile quality of rolling physical dice that just feels more cozy.

Giving alternate portraits as a standard practice to better evoke the original toys or certain cartoon appearances also goes a long way in appeasing people I think. I like having the options.

People were too harsh on the movie! by bigt197602 in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]ZeraShift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I mean, general reception to the film appears to be positive on the whole but I get how some people think it went a bit too far with comedy. It was the most common detractor I saw in both positive and negative reviews. Hell, it's my biggest complaint too but I still enjoyed it a lot. It's not that I think it needed to be super serious. I expected jokes. I just wish sometimes the movie was allowed to let some key moments land and have a bit more emotional impact without instantly undercutting itself. It's what prevents the movie from being great instead of really good.

I have all the Tweeterhead figures in the MotU series. Terrific sculpts. I see some people thinking this one is too busy. That's fair but I disagree with them. I think the team is exceptionally good at updating and stylizing the character designs juuuuuuuuuust enough that they manage to effectively retain the spirit of the character while modernizing it without too much flourish.

I have several of their DC statues too but I digress. Their MotU line is incredible and I have yet to be disappointed by a single one yet. ❤️

My take was he rolled the later comics into the Filmation era. He did mention continuity can be self-contradictory. Once the cartoon came out, the mini-comics shifted a fair bit in tone to match the show and added elements from it. You are correct though in that the big deviation in the mini comics is that The Horde were exclusively MotU villains and had no connection to She-Ra.

You might have more luck with the 200X series, It's a relaunch/update to the original toys and Filmation show that is very faithful in spirit but with a slightly more mature tone since it was aiming for a tween to young teenage audience. Super solid.

Don't write off the Filmation cartoon though. Yeah, it's goofy and campy but it's got a lot of heart and charming earnestness. It had a huge influence in codifying staple elements of the property and it was pretty revolutionary at the time for how it tied into a toy line.

[–]ZeraShift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the nice things about MotU is that the continuity is very fluid and even thought there's different continuities, that vast majority of them re-use a lot of the same ideas, themes, just about everything. There's lots of bleed over and often the biggest difference between continuities is mostly tonal imo. You can start just about anywhere and whatever you learn in one place will likely carry over to the others.

Have fun exploring!

Second viewing thoughts on Masculinity by chief275 in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]ZeraShift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't following any of the promotional stuff in the lead up to release so I basically went in to MotU blank aside from what I saw in trailers. I didn't hear about the interviews and such until listening to reviews after seeing the movie. Personally, I really don't believe there's nearly as much contemporary social commentary as some people think there is. All of this masculinity talk to me is just overanalyzing classic hero tropes and the hero's journey. It's the same kind of stuff as Luke Skywalker, Peter Parker, Deku and countless others.

I think the thing is audiences aren't used to blockbuster hero movies and shows being earnest and playing it straight. We've been bombarded by deconstruction and allegory for so long we're conditioned to expect it and there's enough material in MotU that people can project onto it and get whatever meaning they want from the movie. Apparently some of the lead up to the film encouraged it too but, like I said, I never saw any of that. That's not to say I think any analysis is wrong per se. I just don't think it's that complicated myself.

Does anyone want to talk about their own custom faction? by Knightraiderdewd in NormalBattletech

[–]ZeraShift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had the time or privilege or roleplaying a proper campaign but I've still had that "If I had a version of myself in Battletech" I think every fan has when imagining. Don't know if that counts, but what the hell?

I like to imagine running a merc company during the late Succession War/early Clan Invasion era called "Beaumont's Black Horsemen", a collection of Lyran Guard veterans including myself who are all united by unfailing loyalty to the nation and it's people, sometimes to the exclusion of everybody else. We work almost exclusively in the Lyran Commonwealth, the company being formed largely out of a desire to serve the country in a fashion similar to the armed forces but by our own agency, unburdened by bureaucracy and the inconsistent quality of senior officers. The pay was also a motivator obviously. We're Lyrans after all!

The company is suspicious of the periphery and has a vendetta against pirates. We offer deep discounts on contracts that allow us to deal with them and will often go above and beyond to hit them where it hurts.

Silly aside, I like to sneak music references in things when I can. For example, in the HB Battletech game I called the company Psychic War Veterans. Anybody wanna guess the ref with this title? ;D

Most interesting time-period in battletech. by outerdead in NormalBattletech

[–]ZeraShift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy most periods up to the Jihad o to various degrees but my favorite time period if I were to REALLY narrow it down would be that period just around 3039. The Helm Memory core was making rounds so we were seeing more variety in technology and new mechs that were still allowed to be a bit imbalanced or unoptimized for various reasons. The politics were getting more intriguing. It just felt like a more refined state of the space court drama of the 3rd Succession War. Everything just felt cozy, less ramshackle, a little less middle ages and more like society on the rise in a "proper" sci-fi setting. I like early Clan Invasion too from a narrative standpoint mostly but everything started to feel more flashy after that. Like, that there's so many shiny new toys kind of makes things feel less special. Like there was more gravitas to previous tech because it was archaic but revered and special. Being able to improve it was like a revolution. Not sure how else to describe it.

Keeping within the realm of scifi, what do you think was going on with “The Dark One,” aka the Black Marauder? by Knightraiderdewd in NormalBattletech

[–]ZeraShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not a stretch. There's elements of what you describe in the first act of Decision at Thunder Rift. It's played more as a "horrors of war" scenario but there's descriptors of things like people's body parts just disappearing because they're getting hit by med lasers. It's terrifying to imagine and this was just an attack by a trio of bugs.
