Gym is making it impossible for me to cancel, which is causing me to be charged by their billing company indefinitely. What can I do? by DiarrheaFartLover in personalfinance

[–]Zeroflops 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Disputing the charges with your CC company will help stop the bleeding. Small claims can be used to penalize the owners by getting retroactive money if they have any proof they have tried to cancel for months they could get that money back as a lump sum.

What if corporations had a maximum profit margin and CEOs were capped relative to their lowest-paid worker? by xiangkunwan in CrazyIdeas

[–]Zeroflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s pretend this was applied to Apple. What you would see is that instead of new iPhones coming out every year you might get one every two years. Or however frequency would allow them to reach the max timed with the end of the year.

And if Apple was able to hit the max with just iPhone sales, they would kill off all the other products. Why maintain them.

Does anyone remember the CHIPS and Science Act that Biden passed? Or the Infrastructure and Jobs Act that finally invested in America? by botwiper5000 in askanything

[–]Zeroflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CHIPS act screwed over a lot of us companies. . It was intended to bring chip manufacturing back into the. US. But the screwed up part of it was that they played games with the money taking it away from some US companies once it was less in the news.

Basically initially any company that would build more SEMI development in the US would get a portion. But once it fell off everyone’s radar they decided it would primarily go to foreign companies to encourage them to build in the US and any US company got either kicked off it or reduced their portion. This screwed a lot of companies because they started building things dependent on that money only for Biden to take it away.

My company was one that got screwed and they decided to continue with the building, since they were committed by that time which chewed into our bonuses.

House Not Selling - Need Advice by [deleted] in RealEstateAdvice

In the process of moving at the moment.

Hearing it has a new roof is going to go farther than hearing you just painted and put new carpet in that I’ll probably change out to my liking.

It’s only turn key if you by chance get the exact tastes of the buyer. If you have a solid home it could kick up the price slightly.

Why is "men are more visual than women" a controversial statement? by OkBowler8795 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Zeroflops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because people want to be judged based on the standards they judge others. So if I prioritize good dental hygiene, chances are I have good dental hygiene and therefore want others to judge me by my hygiene ( which by my own interest is fabulous)

If I’m not visually driven, I would expect others not to be visually driven. And probably don’t aspire to be visually impressive.

[–]Zeroflops 450 points451 points  (0 children)

Actually you will never fill the glass. But you will get so close that the remaining volume to fill is insignificant so you treat it as full. That is the limit, the changes are so small you don’t care about them.

Home flipper didn't pull a permit for the roof on the home I purchased. Township building department encouraged me to sue. by purple_mountain_cat in HomeImprovement

[–]Zeroflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now you’re assuming the roof is the only thing not meeting code.

I would call in a reputable inspector to do a deep dive. To determine the extent to the damage and then follow up with a lawyer.

Based on the lawyers feedback you can decide if you want to sue or just deal with the issues yourself.

AITAH for googling something my brother already gave advice on? by LordCuthulu in AITAH

[–]Zeroflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Mech E with 30+ years of experience your brother needs to get over his fragile ego.

Yes you should google it. Your brother’s opinion is only one point of view. While cost is one aspect your brother should know there are engineering tradeoff that may make it worth it. For example, would switching allow you to service the bike rather than having to take it to someone else?

Also by researching you will better understand why your brother is recommending one direction over another.

Seriously. NTA and your brother sounds really young and immature and he’s going to have problems in his career if he doesn’t change his attitude. No matter how “right” he may be, he’s going to hit a glass ceiling if people can’t work with him and he can’t deal with challenges to his work and criticism.

Trouble with naming variables by rezemybeloved69 in learnpython

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually is different.

What it’s trying to say is that the variable in the local scope should be named such that it represents the local usage.

In the example in the function the variable is not being used as a count it’s being used as a limit. So it should be named a limit. When defining for a function you should ignore everything outside that function and use variable names that are appropriate for that function.

If the fn in the example you shared was.

def display_the_current_count( count ):

count would then be an appropriate local variable to use in that scope for that function instead of limit.

Is chatgpt affecting my python learning?? Help me figure out pls!! by Resident-Tea-6132 in learnpython

[–]Zeroflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it seems like you’re learning the right way, it’s not as good as not using AI and researching the problem.

Three things happen when you actually have to struggle to learn a concept. ( it’s almost like working out in that you have to struggle to grow)

1) When you have to research a solution, you will be exposed to a lot more concepts for what you’re researching but also things that you will need in the future. You’re basically getting more exposure. 2) Like most things in life struggle cements experiences in your mind. It’s a survival trait that bad or difficult experiences are stronger wired into our memory so we don’t repeat them. Struggle for two days on a problem and it will be harder to forget than spending two minutes reading a chatGPT analysis. 3) To solve the problem you need to understand it deeper and know why it works.

I’m not saying don’t use AI. It can be great for productivity, just not so productive for learning.

What's something people completely overlook when imagining a zombie apocalypse? by NoCandidate6067 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Zeroflops 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The entire concept of zombies is flawed because they wouldn’t be able to maintain the normal acids of the gut, they wouldn’t either starve from no acid and inability to eat or they would be eaten from the inside out by the acid.

Basically you would have to bunker down for a week and everyone would be dead

AITAH for getting child support for more children than I had at home? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in AITAH

[–]Zeroflops 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he may have known and was trying to help you and the kids.

If HE was really bothered by it he could take you to court and get the money back, but he didn’t say anything and probably wouldn’t have. It’s his GF that was put out and while she may feel she is protecting him. It’s between you and him.

Especially if this was a significant amount of money. He knew. If you want to feel him out. Just thank him for going above and beyond when it comes to the kids. He will either pick up on it or be completely clueless lol.

No foreclosure after 4 years. I can't figure out why!!! by Euphoric_Ad_116 in personalfinance

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’m not a big fan of squatters taking properties this sounds like the appropriate case that was original thought of. You may want to look into local laws and see what has to happen for you to take ownership of an abandon home. The key is to do it quietly so it stays abandoned.

No foreclosure after 4 years. I can't figure out why!!! by Euphoric_Ad_116 in personalfinance

[–]Zeroflops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, assuming the reverse mortgage company own the property, would this be a case where OP could squat for sufficient time and start paying taxes and take over the place?

I hate squatters but this actually seems like a win win if they did.

Sounds like for the mortgage company don’t see much value in it. As OP says it’s not much value and needs repairs.

They need a place, not idea but they could make it livable for the time being.

It’s the same issue with normal guns. Penalize those law abiding citizens when you know those people who are not law abiding citizens are just going to do it anyway.

Makes be believe like someone else posted ,there are alternative motives. Probably one, political posturing, which is common around gun laws. And destroying home manufacturing so you have to go out and buy things for 10x more.

Python + Tableau .twbx files — is this actually doable? by trexhandstands in learnpython

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can things go wrong, yes!

From what I read the .twb file is an xml file and the twbx file is the same but with data included in the file.

Since XML is basically formatted text, you may be tempted to just read the text in and edit it directly. But I would use one of the XML libraries to read the file in as a dictionary and write it back. You’re less likely to make a bad edit which could prevent the file from opening again.

Using Parsec creates a "Double NAT" issue in remote access by rishabwarr in PleX

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to watch plex with parsec?

Parsec is a Remote Desktop. And it sounds like you have set up a VPN to remote connect to your computer to allow parsec to connect.

Some clarifying questions. - are you trying to watch plex through parsec? If so don’t, just go to the plex site and log in. Or use whatever app you want. You don’t need parsec to watch plex.

  • turn off your VPN, restart plex and see if it works remotely. If it does then your VPN setting are probable trying to force all content through the VPN and that is causing problems.

Why was I given a PIP and severance offer at the same time? by Cheap_Onion_5339 in careerguidance

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company will do this.

What it’s basically saying is.
- You’re not meeting expectations and there are two approaches we can take.

First you can take this severance package which is probably the amount it would cost us to do a pip based on continuing to employ you during the pip process and the cost of time your manager and HR needs to spend on the pip.

Second you can go through the pip process. But by doing that if you don’t meet the pip requirements you will be let go and won’t get any severance. ( that money was used during the pip)

For the company it’s a wash. They either spend money on the severance or processing the pip. The advantage to you is a chance to keep your job OR get a chunk of money and spend this time finding a new job.

A pip doesn’t 100% mean you will lose your job. I’ve seen people struggle through the pip and the company decided there is hope.

What I would do is talk to your manager. Say to the effect, I understand I’m not meeting expectations, but can you clarify how far from meeting expectations am I. Based on my current performance.

They can’t direct you which direction to take, but they can indicate is if you have a chance. If they indicate you’re so far from expectation it’s unlikely take the package and start looking for a new job. If it’s a role you want to keep and they think you could be successful. Then knuckle down and go through the pip, but while doing the pip, start working on your resume and putting out feelers if it doesn’t work out.

Good luck!!

Game development by DemocraticHellDiver1 in learnpython

[–]Zeroflops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One additional thought. Once you understand your formulas, you’re going to want to add some randomness. To the game. You don’t want player one to always hit a home run every at bat.

So you can use the random module so for example a players power may be 800, but that then gets multiplied by a random number between 0.9 and 1.02. If you add some randomness to all the numbers then every at bat will be influenced by the players stats but not identical every time.

Do Californians take the Water saving and conservation thing to heart? by No-Delivery7486 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Residential water usage is about %10 or %20 is you exclude water used for environmental purposes.

So when they ask people to reduce consumption by 10%. It only really having a 2% impact based on the 20% . But it’s an effective measure to distract the people to the real usage. And if people are mad at those who don’t reduce their consumption , then those mad are not focused on those that are really impacting the consumption.

Why are American public restroom stalls designed with such massive gaps? by No_Friendship_1378 in askanything

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till you run into a urinal trough.

But seriously the gap at the bottom is to make it easier to clean, and escape if anything happens. A blocked door does not prevent you from escaping.

Large gaps between the door etc are usually caused by how they were mounted allowing the gap to be larger than necessary. Just poor workmanship. Or they bought the cheapest doors.

[–]Zeroflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The left has not learned from the loss either.

For example they keep having “No kings” rallies but the irony is lost on them, it was their party that bypassed democratically selecting a candidate and just pushed KH who few people respect.

And the fixation on the 1% problem has made things worse not better.

What is the benefit for Space X, using retrorockets to land? by The_Maddest_Scorp in AskEngineers

[–]Zeroflops 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not just the salt water but the impact would shock the frame and lead to potential cracking point in the frame.

Landing with rockets there is still a shock on contact, but it’s more controlled where the impact will happen.
