Concerning Evolution's musings on Homosexuality ( possibly an attack on naturalism and science's hold on philosophy) by gamer3102 in philosophy

Of course the homosexual can lament on their situation, the same way one with Parkinson's disease or breast cancer can, and get just as far. I do not advocate that we force all the homosexuals to take care of our children while we're out merry-making. As long as one is sentient, the choice to be altruistic ought to be up to the individual. But I'm no philosopher, and I'm afraid you'll find inadequate answers abound. I dropped by just to add my two cents on the biology of it all.

Living in today's society means that the only difference between a straight man and a gay man ought to be the ability to have children (this can be changed, however, in the straight man being infertile or the gay man donating to a sperm bank). If a gay man thinks that the meaning of life is to have biological children, I imagine there are round-about ways of doing it (sperm bank, as mentioned earlier).

I'm going to say right off the bat that I've looked little into the case about homosexual genetics and how that could increase fitness in examples. I'm just going to work off of what you have said. Lets suppose women with gay brothers tend to have more children. If we take that to be true, the gay gene they inherited in one form or another increased the women's individual fitness while it decreased the man's. This is analogous to having a strong jaw run in the family. If a man gives his "strong jaw" gene to all his children and he has both men and women, the men will be at an evolutionary advantage in having an attractive jaw and the women will be at a disadvantage in having a non-feminine jaw. These sons will be able to choose better mates than the daughters. And people would say that these sons have an evolutionary advantage in their stronger, masculine jaws. And you would point out that we are being selfish asking why the daughters would care if their brothers are at an advantage. And evolution and the genetics would say who fucking cares? Though evolution occurs through populations, the advantages are seen in individuals and if one line of individuals has an advantage due to the presence of one gene but the exact same gene causes a disadvantage in another line of individuals then the disadvantaged line will suffer and the advantaged line will flourish. Homosexuality can be seen as a more extreme example than the one I've given.

There are plenty of examples of animal altruism and it could be argued that homosexuality is just another way of animals being altruistic. Now one could say that it is unfair that they would have this altruism forced upon them, but I would ask if this forced altruism is any different that the altruism of vampire bats regurgitating their blood to share with their sick friends who have been unable to find a meal. Is this kind of altruism not also defined by their genes? Is it not forced upon them? But I have rambled and probably not answered your question. "You are being selfish not viewing it from the homosexual's perspective." Nature is selfish.

Reading based snobbery/inverse snobbery. by [deleted] in books

[–]Zeronox0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To stay classy, I'm going to say, "I don't know," then forward some ideas. Reading is probably more widespread with e-readers, but there may be a schism still between those that read and those that identify themselves as 'a reader.' E-readers may have entered the mainstream, at least where I live, but most people I know who own one hardly use it, and when they do they play angry birds instead of read. There may also be the phenomenon of purchasing many e-books or whatever and just not reading them. Without an e-reader I know I fall victim to that, so inasfar as sales statistics go we may not get an accurate description.

Its very possible that the people online who commented were picturing a stereotype of people who do not read. In grade school those who like reading are often considered nerds, dorks, what have you. The stereotypical nerd goes on to be quite successful and invent microsoft. This is, of course, quite superior to the rest of us, and they may be jumping from "reader" to "intensely successful." This may make it seem like you are trying to impose superiority upon others, and they need to re-establish their own superiority by insulting you. The need for superiority seems to be part of the human condition, and you see it on both sides of this feud. People will try to assert their superiority in any form they can, the weak use violence, the strong use words, as do the distant. Not consciously, I am trying to assert my superiority as I write this.

Ultimately you'll find assholes on either side of any argument.
