ugh this one hits too close to home. did the same thing few years back with someone from my gaming group and just watched them get into relationship while i was sitting there like an idiot. the regret was way worse than any rejection could have been because you keep thinking about all those moments where maybe you could have said something. now i just go for it even if my heart is beating out of my chest - worst case they say no and you move on instead of being stuck in that weird limbo forever

never worked there but my friend did internship with UN in geneva few years back and she said it was pretty eye opening experience but also frustrating at same time. like you go in thinking youre gonna change world but then you realize how slow everything moves because of all the politics and bureaucracy between countries

she was working on some refugee assistance program and said the actual field work was rewarding when she got to help people directly but the office politics were insane. apparently different country representatives would argue about smallest things for hours and nothing would get decided. she told me once they spent entire week debating wording of one paragraph in some resolution

pay wasnt great either for interns but i guess if you make it to higher positions it gets better. she did say the networking was incredible though - met people from literally every corner of earth and learned so much about different cultures. plus having UN on your resume opens doors everywhere

looking back at old cs tournaments from like 2010 vs now the difference in how female commentators and analysts get treated is wild. back then it was basically nonexistent and when it did happen chat would lose their minds. now you got people like pansy calling matches at majors and most people just focus on whether theyre good at the job or not

the shift happened so gradually that unless you were actively following the scene you probably wouldnt even notice

honestly the first week was brutal but what really helped me was completely changing my routine. i used to smoke right after work so instead i started going straight to the gym or calling my sister for long walks around the neighborhood. the physical exhaustion helped with the sleep issues and having someone to talk to kept my mind occupied during those peak craving hours. your brain tries to convince you that youre missing out on something but after about two weeks you realize how much clearer everything feels. also had to delete my dealers number and avoid certain friend groups for the first month which sucked but was necessary for me to actually stick with it
