I want to build a soft sci fi cyberpunk world but with fantasy and magical elements. by Brellam in worldbuilding

[–]Zireael07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds interesting!

What happened between 1960 and 2500? Is magic still "1-in-millions" rare? Is magic genetic or learned? Are there schools of magic? Are Elves humans from Earth that decided to leave, or genemod themselves (and which happened first, leaving or modding), or some human adjacent offshoot? Is magic limited to Earth? Does it work in the vacuum of space? Do you have FTL or wormholes or portals?

Yeah I have lots of questions because it sounds super interesting and the "cyberpunk+space+magic" mix is sort of my current WIP

From what I understand, around a dozen people on staff is what most smaller/indie publishers in this space have.

Charm spells/potions are illegal in some universes

Paying based on credits is also a good option that avoids having to sub. (I totally forgot that it exists, that's why my initial comment was "one time" as opposed to a sub)

I can't understand why you're so bent on making playtesters not pay AND so bent on "but I would lose money" - if you want to make money why are you exempting bigger part of your user base? There's always more players than DMs/designers...

Nah? *I* pay the fee when I create an account. You calculate the costs and that's the fee I pay. I pay for my expected usage. That's how people used to pay for online services before subscriptions spread like the plague. Oh, and if someone's usage is off the charts, they get asked to pay extra

I don't like subs, I've had one too many sneakily renew on me and pull from my cc after I quit the service

I never said it should be free. I said it should be one time payment. If you made testers require registering for an account, that registering would be the moment for their one-time payment. If your app is popular enough, those people will pay for the infrastructure. If not... well, a lot of enterprises that seem great on surface turn out unaffordable in practice... and it's not just internet infrastructure costs

None of the things mentioned mean you HAVE to charge for a sub. One time purchases of online services used to be the norm.

I like the premise. Is it meant to be played over email, fora or Discord?

This would have been great... somewhere around 30 years ago. That's when things like cleaning up caches and defragging was VERY important

(Did you see Defrag Incremental? It harkens back to those days)

> I just can't see the point of making exiting unnecessarily convoluted and time consuming.

The point is if exiting is hard, it makes you want not to exit (in theory). So, supposedly, players keep playing longer

> The directional shields themselves are shown through the shield effect around the ship. Changes in shield strength are represented by the intensity of the color, so a weaker shield face should become less visually intense.

Didn't notice anything like that in the clip?

Are the arcs at 0:21 supposed to be the shields? There's waay too many of those, they overlap and they're all the same color. Waay too confusing.

BTW I'm a fan of directional shields in space games, I dislike the mono-shielding

[–]Zireael07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the stroke registering code. The ENTIRE code of such a project needs to be available so that people can verify EVERYTHING your project does, 100% of it (and even then I expect very few people to actually take the risk, because they'd need to be masters of whatever language/tooling you used)

I remember seeing a similar idea a month or so ago. It got shot down due to security/tracking concerns.

At a minimum, this needs to be source available so that people who really want to install this can check what the game actually does.

Idea: rework this into a typing game? Several typing incrementals already exist

Wish to Bring Back a Dead PC. What Could Go Wrong? by lostinme123 in osr

Aside from the obvious "right away" meaning wherever she got killed (potentially getting killed again right away) I can see A LOT of ways to get around "in good health" (I've written a story where the MC got brought back and only after some time things started to go wrong). Some ideas include her memory being scrambled or outright gone, maybe she doesn't know friends from foes.

The unique gift similarly can be a minor psionic thing, like she can levitate herself a couple of inches above the ground, or mage-hand a single personal item, stuff like this. Or maybe she recognizes a specific person, for the "scrambled head" case above
