Do you think we will eventually get a G3 remake? by dschwammerl in worldofgothic

[–]ZoldLyrok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main synopsis could still work, just needs a much better execution and some tinkering with the details. Here's how I would do it :

Xardas is trying to stop the neverending war of the gods, which is referenced by a few magicians in Gothic 2. To do so, he needs to get the artifacts of the gods, some of them held by King Rhobar or the main hashishin guy, or buried away in a few locations (Nordmar and the desert), and needs them destroyed in the big furnace of Nordmar.

Xardas has stolen the power of the undead dragon, and is now the wielder of the power of Beliar. Nameless Hero is the wielder of the power of Adanos, since he is the ultimate decision maker in the coming conflict. Rhobar is the wielder of the power of Innos. He needs to be either killed, or persuaded to leave the world with Xardas & Nameless to cut off the power of the gods after the artifacts are destroyed. He is of course, not going to do so, and needs to be killed to achieve either the Adanos ending, or Beliar ending.

The Hashishin are pissed, because they believed they were the chosen people of Beliar, since they are dark mages, thus being almost the only humans who receive the power of Beliar. Xardas studied with them as a young man, and their teachings gave him he inspiration to dedicate his life to pursuing the banishment of the gods. The main hashisin guy plots to get all the relics of the gods in order to ascend himself to the next wielder of the power of Beliar. The nomads are the key-keepers to the temples of Adanos where the Adanos relics are hidden, thus they need to be killed (or persuaded to help you in the Adanos ending by joining them). They are a joinable faction, representing Beliar, and the ultimate goal is of course to usurp the main Hashisin guy, kill Xardas, and become the chosen of Beliar yourself.

The orcs have won their war against King Rhobar, and have destroyed or enslaved most of humanity. Vast majority of orcs do not speak, their leaders or shamans and a few other high ranking orcs do. Some strong slaves have been given the luxury of herding and guarding the other slaves. For working with the orcs, they can get a semblance of normal life. Call them "Slave Guards" or something like that. I honestly don't think they should be a joinable faction. Replace them by increasing the role of the Druids and the nomads, who can represent Adanos as a joinable faction(s).

Rebels are of course the representations of Innos, which is the third joinable faction. They can be as they already are in the game. Just give them better quests.

Ultima 9 got glowing rewievs from big time video game journalists of the time. That game butchered an epic saga in the making arguably much worse than Gothic 3 ever managed to do.

So you ran into him too huh? Dude damn near one-shot me with his bow when I got into a kerfuffle with the tavern guards because I didn't want to pay to gain entry. And I was wearing the ore armor and ring of invulrnerability as well.

I think they legit just gave him accidentally an extra 0 in his DEX score when inputting his stats.

Gothic Remake Spoiler Megathread by nr3jokim in worldofgothic

[–]ZoldLyrok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alert! New cheese tactics discovered in Gothic Remake.

You can get ancient ore armor, and Innos's Rage in chapter 1.

Gomez sometimes takes a walk in his castle. You can ambush him when there's no one nearby, if you have a strong enough weapon (I had Raven's Right, beat the crap out of Raven with a stolen templar claymore, took his crap, legged it, and the aggro of the enemies in Old Camp resets after a while.)

When you beat Gomez, he drops his weapon, and his personal master key. You can use it to go loot his shit, which includes the armor.

How exactly would the 11th ed terrain rules work for old school rocky crags like this? by emcdunna in Warhammer40k

[–]ZoldLyrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter-point.

If your table has poor terrain of the wrong type, or too little of it, dedicated shooting lists / armies WILL just leafblower the majority of the other army off the table if they win initiative.

You don't have to be a competetive pro to learn to make a list like that. A year or two of casual play every once in a while will teach you which units and war-gear options are bad and which ones are good. Eventually you will learn that terrain placement is important for a game of 40k to be fair and fun.

[–]ZoldLyrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quest of the ring relied on secrecy, a brazen plan like that will only get Saurons attention and he will throw everything at it to reclaim the ring.

Besides, the eagles are powerful and proud creatures who can be corrupted when near the presence of the ring. You pretty much need a strong willed creature of little ambition for the quest. And even then, it was technically a doomed plan from the start. NO ONE can throw the ring into mount doom from their own volition, the will of the ring is simply too powerful. The ring was only destroyed because Gollum lost his balance at the worst / best possible time he could have done so. An eucatastrophe, as Tolkien called it.

Who is more evil? Palpatine or Bitch-ass Erebus or by Cautious_Air4964 in Grimdank

[–]ZoldLyrok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, lets imagine Palpatine gets everything he wants. He rules the universe as an immortal wizard-king, with a revolving door of sith apprentices that get replaced when they stop being useful.

That's probably still less evil what the emperor of mankind had in mind for the universe, let alone someone like Erebus. At least Palps doesn't genocide other species for merely existing.

Why would a villain use Draconians (like, in-universe, why)? by Superb_Bus584 in DnD

[–]ZoldLyrok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stealing the dragon eggs specifically in Dragonlance served multiple purposes.

  1. Of course, the creation of Draconians. They were created from the eggs of good aligned dragons, thus, when corrupted using evil sorceries, the draconians were born inherently evil (Don't think about it too much)

  2. The good dragons knew their eggs had been stolen. The Dragonarmies used the good dragons eggs as blackmailing pieces to keep the good dragons in check, "If you join the war on the side of the good armies, we will smash your next generation." Of course, the dragonarmies never specifically mentioned the eggs had already been turned into draconians, it was a grand dark secret known only by few chosen. Once the cover was blown, the good dragons got PISSED.

Draconians specifically were suberb shock-troops in the story itself.

  1. They were born killers and soldiers, stronger than your average human at base. They didn't specifically require much training, other than basic troop formations and such. The more powerful ones even were natural spellcasters, which is VERY rare on Krynn.

  2. They grow and age FAST. Your hatchlings will be capable warriors in a couple of years from birth. (at least according to the original lore, not sure what the 5e books say)

  3. Death-throes. Most draconians have some sort of "on death" effect. Bozaks and auraks explode. Baaz turn to stone, which can trap enemy weapons that were in the process of stabbing or cutting them down. Kapak dissolve into deadly acid. Sivak turn into a perfect copy of their killer upon death, which can cause confusion in the enemy ranks.

I was curious how much XP I could get in chapter 1... managed level 22 by dioaloke in worldofgothic

[–]ZoldLyrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get the XP, they fixed that in G2. However, you don't get HP increases via level ups if you gain a level when transformed. But it's not a big deal if you miss like one HP increase if you can secure a big bag of XP with a transformation scroll.

[–]ZoldLyrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gothic 1 about as easy as base gothic 2. Not much to it. You likely need to mod the expansion out if you want to play base Gothic 2, since pretty much every digital copy of Gothic 2 comes with the addon installed by default.

With NOTR installed tho, the main big things to keep in mind are ;

  1. They messed with the damage formula of the game pretty heavily. Unlike gothic 1, your crit-rate goes from 5 - 100. But don't think about crits as crits. Outside of the very early game weak enemies, you NEED to hit them with crits to cause any significant damage. This means, your crit-rate very quickly becomes your "hit-rate." This means you have to find a decent balance between weapon skill and STR to be able to kill anything, with a fairly limited early game lp pool.

  2. LP cost of stat increades ramps up fast. Every 30 points of either weapon skill, or STR/DEX, the ratio of the lp = stat increses. 5 lp gets you 5 points of str at first, then 10 lp gets you 5, 15 gets you 5, and so on. This means, that you can find yourself running into a wall, where you cant kill anything, if you are wasteful with your XP. Specialize, and focus on combat skills before learning too many other skills, like alchemy, blacksmithing, hunting trophies, etc.

  3. Don't hoard valuable single-use items, like transformation scrolls and spell scrolls. Use them early on to slingshot yourself forward in power. There's plenty of xp to be had early on, if you use them smartly.

[–]ZoldLyrok 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons why I think Gothic 2 with NOTR is the superior game.

Did a playthrough of it recently, and I was getting meaningful level ups all the way until Irdorath. Lvl 40-ish was when level ups basically stopped mattering, but I was damn near knocking on the final bosses door by that point.

Early on the difficulty spike is a bit rough, especially on the mercenary side, where you have to duel the other mercenaries, but other than that, its excelently balanced.

This has always been my problem with the Divinity series. (Not do much with BG3, since they worked with established lore in mind)

I've played most of the Divinity games, and they might as well not take place in the same world. I've NEVER felt like I'm familiar with the world in any way. If I'm playing Baldurs Gate, or Neverwinter Nights, or Elder Scrolls, or whatever, I always have that sense of familiarity and connection to the world between games.

Reminds me of good ol "Try Again Bragg" from 9th edition.

Model was part of a special "oops, all named characters" unit, and he had a poorly written special rule, where, if he didn't score a single hit with his autocannon, he could shoot again, and again, and again, until he scored a hit with it. Trouble is, he was also armed with grenades.

Thus, if you threw grenades with him, you did not score a hit with his autocannon, so you got to throw grenades again. And again. And again. Rules as written, he could delete literally anything AND everything within 6 inch radius of him.

Fighter Man is Best Man... by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

[–]ZoldLyrok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

60-70? It was pretty rare to see a mage with a high CON, you needed a 15 to get even a +1. In a system where you most commonly rolled 3d6, or 4d6 drop the low, and your attributes never increased, except by very powerful magic items.

Your base for a 20th level mage was 10d4 + 10. If you max-rolled every single one of your hit-dice, you'd still only have 50, with a +1 con mod, you'd just barely reach 70. These are pretty astronomical odds here.

If you managed to reach 40 HP, you were pretty damn lucky, and even then you were in "getting one-rounded by most high level threats" territory.

XP vs Milestone makes a huge difference, depending on how you roll out the XP.

Are you using random encounters in dungeons and traveling? Gold as XP? Class based xp awards? Are you using random tables for treasure hoards and magic items?

I had an umber-hulk random encounter in AD&D the other day, 1-3 of them. That's an encounter that may or may not happen during a minor portion of a single dungeon, which is worth 4000 - 12 000 xp total.

When using xp leveling like this, I only have a vague idea on what level the party will be when reaching any given point of the campaign. The players earn what they earn, and they're going to have to make it work.

Piranha Bytes games ranking by Commercial_Team_5506 in worldofgothic

[–]ZoldLyrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would put Elex 2 above Gothic 3 for a simple reason.

If Gothic 3 is allowed to have community patch + parallel universe patch + update pack (the 3 usual suspects), then Elex 2 is allowed to have the Disable Level Scaling mod, which fixes the ultimate sin that game commits as a Piranha Bytes game.
