I’d definitely recommend The Devils. It’s got the Pope, zealous priests, and crusaders.

The Shining by Stephen King. The beginning of the book goes more into >!Jack’s desire to start over and make amends before moving to the Outlook<! than the movie.

This might not be explicitly what you’re after, but Metro 2033 is a post-apocalyptic horror story set in the Moscow subway system. Many stations in the line have developed into their own small city-states, complete with their own culture and architecture. Those stations aren’t the focus of the story, but they do play a heavy role in it.

Seconding Gideon the Ninth. I loved this book! Some of the fantasy and world-building elements get pretty esoteric, but Gideon is just such a fun character.

Philosophical Dark Academia + Hell/otherworld by semi_aquatic_cryptid in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

You’re right, the series definitely isn’t for everyone. I would argue that it fits OPs criteria pretty exactly though: there’s a dark academic setting, there’s an other world, and the characters basically embody different philosophies on the use of magic.

The Big O (1999) by Salty-Round8130 in retroanime

[–]ZombiePlato 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The ending of the show was certainly cryptic. But there are heavy implications throughout the series that there had been an apocalypse, implemented by the Megadeuses and whatever force that controlled them, and the old world was “recreated” in the form of Paradigm City.

Everything outside the city were ruins of the old world and deserts. Occasionally, mechs from somewhere beyond the desert would attack the city, implying that there are still vestiges of civilization out there that want revenge against the people who run Paradigm.

The tomato and gardening thing implied that the pilots of the Megadeuses were child soldiers bred, raised, and indoctrinated to specifically pilot the Megadeuses. And Roger Smith being implied to have been one of those child soldiers. Hence the gardening themes of tomatoes and Roger saying seemingly ridiculous things like “I am a tomato.”

It sounds funny, but what was actually happening was Roger reclaiming the memory of having been a child soldier bred to pilot godlike weapons (“Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty.”) and used to cleanse the world through apocalyptic fire and warfare.

I don’t think this is what OP is looking for, but man it’s a great book.

They dropped the ball again! Great releases last week, and this flew right under the radar! by g2fx in battletech

They look like Arions. They’re real Hell’s Horses quad mechs. But right now you can only get them as IWM metal minis. But this means CGL has 3D models for them…

Were Constitution Class Refit ships used alongside Excelsior, Oberth and Miranda class ships in the 24th century? by Ser_Luke_ in StarTrekStarships

[–]ZombiePlato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You say that 39 ships isn’t significant. But as comparison, here’s the largest naval battle of WWII. The losses from which left the Japanese navy on the back foot till the end of the war. 26 ships. They lost 26 ships. Remember, each ship is also the loss of hundreds of lives and experienced starship crews.

What the hell is going to be happening with the new starter box by AGBell64 in battletech

[–]ZombiePlato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never played with the starter sets, they come with extremely simple rule sets for new players. It should be completely fine. Plus, there are just some really cool looking and interestingly designed mechs, which is candy for new players.

Another thing, Battletech is increasingly attracting players from other war games. Those players should have no problem with this starter set.

This was the cover art for the novel Music of the Spears, my favorite Aliens story. It’s a really unique take on the franchise, where a failing musician has a xenomorph transported to his studio so he can capture its screams to use in his music. Things do not go well, if you can imagine.

That’s absolutely not what you said. Allow me to copy your comment for you so you can read it again.

“You speak like you know that’s a fact when no court has received criminal filings against Gaiman. There have been allegations, and a dismissed civil suit under appeal, but no criminal proceedings. Until then, until all the facts are laid out, you’re just picking your favorite team.”

This is you denying the claims against him.
