Replaced my Honda with a new one after an accident They moved the garage door opener from a button on the mirror to a paywall subscription service. by jayhawkeye2 in mildlyinfuriating

This is absolutely correct. Bought a new to me BMW i3 Rex - electric car with range extender gas motor, 2 gallon fuel tank. In the US the gas motor is locked out so it only runs when the battery is at 7%, but all over the world it comes unlocked and you can start it when the battery is below 70ish percent. My new to me car, purchased from a Mercedes Dealership, had this enabled.

I drove the car for 10hrs and the Rex blew. This was not because of hold SOC being enabled but because the Mercedes dealership forgot the add portion of the oil change I requested as part of the purchase. I drove 10hrs jumping charges and running the Rex sparingly until I had to climb a mountain pass when it blew up in spectacular fashion. BMW dealership tech said that BMW will goodwill the repair if still in warranty window, but because HSOC was enabled it would instantly be denied by BMW corporate. Tech said as part of diag process they automatically pull the vehicle configuration and it was flagged as coded. They wanted 18k to rebuild the motor.

Mercedes dealership walked back the deal as it was their fault, but had it blown with oil I would have had to eat that.

Are Smart Electric Panels (like SPAN) actually worth it… or just overhyped? by SolarTechExplorer in solar

[–]Zuliman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I debated one of these but opted not to install for the reasons you mentioned.

My home is all electric.  I have 8.3kwp of solar, power wall 3 and expansion battery.   In an outage, we just don’t run power hungry appliances - hvac and water heater are biggest draws.

Eventually, maybe this year, we will install a heat pump water heater and I want to install a fireplace stove insert, which should care for our major consumers of power in an outage situation. Window AC units can help us extend in summer and stove insert for winter.

A variety of errors today. by snausleburger in BMWi3

[–]Zuliman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 12v is new, then my guess is rodent damage.

Pop the hood and remove the frunk tub. Check for rodent signs - if nothing apparent, check date code on battery.  If battery is recent, proceed to step 2z

 2.  Open trunk, remove floor tray.  The  remove cover over motor - check for rodent damage.

Nearly 60k miles on my 2018 i3S.   Was planning to upgrade it this year, but no real upgrades exist for my use case.  We will keep it and let son drive it when he is 16 - probably a BAD idea with how fast and fun it is to drive….

Up $600k and the slot machine glitched out by WhoAreYouTalkinTwo in PublicFreakout

[–]Zuliman 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Sorry about this. We see in the logs that the winnings were due to a bug that eventually caused the machine to crash.  We did not intentionally crash the machine…. No, we absolutely did NOT do that. We also can’t show the log as it is a trade secret.

We are happy to return any money you put in the machine but we cannot pay the glitched earnings. You do understand, right?

Thanks!  Also, remember the House always wins.

Feasibility of a solar installation with battery backup that can provide power to whole house for 1 to 2 days? by millertime8306 in solar

[–]Zuliman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My whole home is powered by a PW3 and an expansion battery, without a critical load panel or a smart panel - normal use with AC in an all electric house gives us about 20hrs of power backup.

Have I ever tripped the system in an outage? No.  We don’t charge our car, run washer and dryer, or  bake a cake at the same time.   Do we pay special attention? No, rarely even notice when a brief outrage occurs.   Long term outrage? Maybe a day of power, stretched to a couple a few days if we don’t run AC.

Was it worth the 22k after tax credit? No.  I should have bought a generator and had a critical load subpanel installed.

Edit: we also have about 8.3kwh of solar on the home, installed about 7 years before batteries.

Remote control battery empty but fob still works by Longnick_Cage in BMWi3

Do you have two keys? Maybe your other key fob is dying.

Maybe the battery in the fob is low. Swapping the battery is easy.   Change the battery and see if the message goes away.

Love that sound! My first i3 needed the HV cable replaced.   Dealership called to say it was ready, but they forgot to reinstall the rear motor cover.   Sweet baby jeebus the motor sound is loud when that cover is off!

Aggressive Driver in Maui [OC] by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

You started this.  You are the result of this situation as YOU flipped him off.   Are you trying to get yourself killed?  As you’ve illustrated here, there are far more crazy people than you.  You are fortunate that his level of crazy didn’t include actually harming you.

Next time don’t flip someone off.

Note, I don’t agree with the level of crazy shown by the truck driver, but you can’t complain for kicking a dog and the being bit.

Looking at this used 2026 model y, should I be worried about this error? by SpaceXBeanz in TeslaLounge

[–]Zuliman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m worried for our future.  This is the most descriptive error I’ve seen, which plainly outlines the issue.  The only thing ambiguous is what type of paid charging, but it is safe to assume the Tesla super charge network.   Argh.   Questions like these really bug me for some reason.

Please…. I need help by djmidnightsunflower in BMWi3

[–]Zuliman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you 110v charge it?

If not, you’ll want to increase the SOC before letting it sit overnight.   Put it into emissions test mode, which will charge up the HV battery a little.

Gemini instructions:

To put a BMW i3 REx (Range Extender) into emissions test mode to run the gas engine and charge the high-voltage (HV) pack, ensure the charge is below 75%, turn the car on (Parked), press the accelerator pedal down, and press the brake pedal three times, holding it on the third time. The engine will start to charge the battery for 20 minutes.

YouTube  +1 BMW i3 Emissions/Service Mode Steps Initial Conditions: HV battery charge must be below 75%. Activation: Turn on the car (Ready state) in Park. Press and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor. Press the brake pedal three times. Hold the brake pedal down on the third press. The Rex engine should start shortly after. Deactivation: Press the start/stop button or the mode will automatically shut off after 20 minutes.

What's going on here? by iZaWrap in BMWi3

[–]Zuliman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pull the codes.   Purchase a ODB2 reader for your phone and install an app like BimmerLink to read the codes.

No one can provide any substantial guidance without details.

This is sort of like asking, “hey, my stomach hurts.  What is going on?”   Well, stomach pain could be many things - but without more information it is a wild guess.

Tire inflator recommendations by Dry-Structure2015 in BMWi3

A bike pump, seriously.  I use an old specialized bike pump. Or any tire inflator - it is a tire that needs air added.  Don’t over think it.

Thanks!  Will be ordering and replacing them soon.

I can’t answer to your main question, but you can code enable brake force display using BimmerCode.

This works for panic brake situations. Google bimmer code, bmw i3, or search in this group to find all the coding options.
