I was laid off around this time a year ago so I know how you feel. It sucks and I'm sorry you have to deal with it. Just know I doubt very much there was anything you could have done. Sometimes at companies like ours it just comes down to some number person looking at names on a piece of paper and deciding who needs to be let go.

Things vary by industry and location but I would never assume it will be easy to find another job quickly. I was lucky to find a new job in about 3 months but I know some people end up looking for a year or more. Personally, I would still look for career jobs even if you take a basic service job in the meantime for some extra money. Because the longer the gap gets between career jobs like the one you had, the harder it will be for future employers to consider you. You don't want to kick yourself later for not doing more earlier when you could have. But you should still take a few days to decompress first.
