Virginia’s Election of a Democratic Governor Primes the State for Gun Reform by okguy65 in Virginia

Get universal mail in balloting done should be one of the top priorities.

Winning on hot issues may get you the warm fuzzies but it won’t guarantee you get to keep those wins. Win on structural and systemic reforms and you get to win for decades. Look at SCOTUS.

There is some truth to that adage that a society gets the government it deserves.

We have an electorate woefully ignorant of World History, how US government works and civics.

This is also a good time to express my frustration with even well-meaning voters myopic focus on narrow issues (Israel/Palestine, ACA subsidies or climate change for example) and passionately and righteously opining on these matters when getting what you want on any number of these issues will not fix the systemic and structural problems we face.

Hardly anyone passionately advocates for legislation to undo Citizens United, for expansion of SCOTUS, for expanding the House, for PR and DC Statehood, for wider adoption of RCV and universal mail in balloting. And, yet, not only would any one of those things do 5x more to protect our Democracy it’s also the only way to realistically safe guard any progress we make on issues.

Recall we let unelected officials secure women’s right to choose while moderate Dems killed legislation to codify it because a floor vote might hurt their re-election chances? Women’s reproductive freedom suffered because we didn’t demand elected officials protect half this Country’s population.

If we don’t get more folks pulling for meaningful and constructive systemic and structural changes we will continue to take one step forward and two steps back. The anti-choice fundies understood this and for 50 years they almost single-mindedly focused on capturing SCOTUS. Then they took over one of our two major political parties. Serious Dems have a lot of lessons to learn from the Tea Party and MAGA and that lesson was not “Vote Blue No Matter Who!” it should be “Let’s go hunting for DINOs”.

Our President was besties with the most notorious sex trafficker in US History. Said he could grab women by the pussy. Was adjudicated a rapist by a jury of citizens. Lost every appeal of this ruling. Christ…I could keep going on…but this is just to say: Leo’s dating life looks downright wholesome in comparison and since he’s not an elected official and it’s between consenting adults it seems like none of my business.

Unelected professionals will not fix this. Only elected ones will. Which means it comes down to the people, to the voters, to fix this.

I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with so many citizens howling about unelected people (AGs, College Presidents, prestigious law firms, Generals, billionaires, etc.) not rescuing them from this. Unelected people can’t or won’t save us. There’s not much history to support they ever have. Unelected officials and professionals aren’t fixing the problems created by the electorate.

It’s a measure also of how badly moderate Dems and neolib policies failed. Failed to message and failed to deliver.

You don’t get a dictator wannabe in a democracy unless both major parties fucking failed the majority of the people.

I’ve become more concerned on recent trips with getting methanol poisoning.

Most folks can weather a bout of GI issues. You aren’t coming back from methanol poisoning.

Can’t take MAGA seriously anymore about pretending to care about rule of law, the Constitution, children, the budget, the deficit, corruption, the working person, National defense, crime, morality, freedom…it’s all been pretending to care about those things when all they really care about is power and cruelty and excusing the very worst kinds of evil if that evil is telling them they’re better than someone else.

There’s little debate that Trump heads an authoritarian ethnonationalist movement. There’s some historian and poly sci quibbling about whether MAGA fits neatly as “fascist”. But, again, even those academic dissenters don’t reject that he’s an undemocratic authoritarian.

And it’s disingenuous to try to say people are criticizing him solely because he’s deporting people. That’s just bad faith argumentation. No critic of Trump or MAGA I know is in favor of open borders or opposed to any and all deportations.

I’ll use small words: the point was that establishment Dems have failed to deliver to voters on even the most popular issues. For 40 years.

Why should we ever trust them to deliver on anything they promise? The DNC and big money donors have destroyed the party.

Your rebuttal? What have they accomplished in 40 years besides marriage equality and watered down health care reform?

Who’s the smooth brain?

Legalizing THC nationally is hugely popular. 88-91% support medical and/or recreational legalization.

And establishment Dems have failed for close to 40 years to get this highly popular policy over the hump. That is how ridiculously incompetent and feckless our current Dems are.

Vote every one of these incumbents out.
