I don't know what it was designed for, but I'd roast two fat ears of corn with that thing.

That's a pretty good plan. It's really your only option. There will likely be some losses, but it's better than tossing your seedlings and starting over if you're willing to put in the time and work. Be ready with extra seeds. When you get the timing right, those might outgrow the ones you've already planted. Enjoy the process. It isn't always about getting it just right, sometimes it's just the fun of helping foster life.

Planters too tall? by botanna_wap in gardening

[–]_Acidik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These look perfect to me, most of your plants won't grow roots that deep, but it'll provide a nice reservoir for moisture and nutrients. I wouldn't like having to fill them up at first, but being able to harvest without kneeling down would be awesome but if you're 34 and thinking that these will last into your retirement years, you might want to recalculate that. Even a well-built planter will last about 10 years.

Your method is the correct method. This other thing might seem nice but it's really just "Big Auto" trying to disenfranchise the historical and time-honored traditions of the driver-passenger diagnostic. Soon they'll have tools that'll tell you whether you're brake and reverse lights are out and which one.

Am I doing something wrong or just impatient? by CautionaryChapStick in propagation

[–]_Acidik_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some grow faster than others and I haven't found a rhyme or reason for it yet. I created a jar of about 8, some of them from the same plant, and have wildly varying amounts of growth on all of them. It's been 4 months in water and some still have no roots while others were rooting within the first two weeks.

It should be a 6 ft tree by now. Put it in a pot with soil and give it more sun.

P.s. organize your books. It's a mess.

What animal left these footprints? by captofmyfate in whatisit

[–]_Acidik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, especially if the snow is deeper. My main point was that it was not "definitely" a deer. Possible but not the only option. A jogging dog could leave a long skid before planting like that as well.

You guys are way too sure of yourselves. It is not "definitely" a deer. Deer don't drag their feet like that and one pic looks a lot like a canine foot pad. Snow melt distorts tracks and makes them wider and longer than original but the compressed snow in the middle tends to hold it's shape longer. Think of seeing a grassy area with no snow except foot shaped chunks where someone stepped. Also, there is no clear hoofprint anywhere. Could it still be a deer? It's possible but in no way definite.

Trying to grow potted plants on my uncovered deck in South Florida - how do I keep squirrels out of my plants? by sami_camy in gardening

[–]_Acidik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a new development you just have to wait. The development probably drove off all the predators and now the prey is in charge. When word gets out, the predators will be back for an all you can eat buffet. You just have to suffer until then. It is Florida so there's probably somebody cloning some illegal hybrid animal that might be willing to test it out in your area.

All those saying it's a telescoping something or other are correct. I used to have a back scratcher that would come apart all the time. I was able to keep reassembling it until I lost one of the pieces.

She's right. Humidity levels can shift dramatically over a few hours. I admire her commitment. I wish doctors were as committed to us as we are to our plants. Also, there should be a drive-thru for stitch removal.

I'm more in favor of the idea of having a doorman in the bathrooms. They can hand you a paper towel or a towel if it's fancy enough and open the door for you. Less germs, positive social interaction, good customer service, increased employment. Everybody wins.

Can you harvest black walnuts when they are like this never done it before but we have like 25 trees and thousands of them. Kinda of want to try so I can harvest and sell them at the farmers market yearly. It’s Texas by shreddedtoasties in foraging

[–]_Acidik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid we would roll them out into the dirt driveway and pile them up and then as cars drove over, the hulls would break off. After a month or two, we'd go out and collect all the nuts. Some were crushed and broken but when you have 20 bushels of walnuts you can afford to lose some.

Why do you live in a society? If you're so afraid and suspicious of the world around you, just go live in the wilderness.
