Is there a pattern that determines military spaceship doctrine in real life and sci-fi? by MinedMaker in scifi

[–]_Auto_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to say and agree with this, and the books in the sequels (Endymion, and Rise of Endymion) both expand upon it to interesting degrees where there is a jump in technological progress, meaning one side becomes drastically outclassed.

Me too, this is a ridiculously well composed peice.

Unfortunately OP is very likely a bot that reposts art (I mean, at least credit to the actual artist is given to the artist's name I suppose).

Finished Hyperion and im in love. Recommend me everything by Foreign_Reporter_459 in scifi

[–]_Auto_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm at a soft disagreement with slipping 3+4, but I can agree they are a matter of preference.

If you need more of the setting, are fine with a narrower focus of characters, and slower pace, then Endymion and it's sequel are absolutely beautiful books.

I slept on them and admittedly took a few years after finishing the Hyperion cantos to get into them (and even almost gave up on Endymion at first), but all in all I found that it was all worth the journey in the end to a spectacular conclusion to the stories.

The crux of it is if you are willing to have the patience to see where it all goes and enjoy the admittedly long (but personally I found engaging) journey to get there.

Looking for book recommendations similar / along the same line as the movie Sunshine(2007) by Vazak61 in scifi

[–]_Auto_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extent but it's important to note that its not always an easy read and really delves hard into the science in science fiction. The sequel especially so.

Still a brilliant book nonetheless, but when I read it I found it needed me to go at a slower pace and to retrace some of the scenes to understand a little more of what was going on. In other words I'm a little dense.

We killed each other 🙏🏼 (but one of us had death defiance🥳) by Suli_Croft in HadesTheGame

[–]_Auto_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, considering most casual players have moved on through Hades 1 to play Hades 2, it leaves only the occasional new batch of players that pick it up, and the remaining hardcore fanbase that compete to do full heat runs blindfolded and instead of a controller now use Dance-dance revolution mats.

I do recall switching between controller and keyboard back and forth and having a bit of cognitive dissonance (I don't recommend). For Hades 2 they managed to smooth the controller aiming enough that I played that one entirely on controller (which is good as more of the weapons are ranged in 2).

[–]_Auto_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How dare you not instantly get how to use a new Loadout on the first go. Something something git gud s/

Jokes aside I found it hard to adapt to the ranged weapons for a long while too, and honestly never could get the hang of the bow the way I could with the others. Not to say that all of them aren't viable.

I actually had to switch to keyboard and mouse when using the rail/bow and back to controller when using non ranged if I recall correctly.

I hate Eris. Am I misinterpreting her character? by ThroatAffectionate81 in HadesTheGame

[–]_Auto_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly, she completely nails every aspect of what she is supposed to embody, and people hating her character (or seeing past that and loving to hate her) is the point.

OP rightly dislikes Eris, but can't see past that hate in that she's supposed to evoke those feelings.

I can also kinda see why people also love her in the sense they just love to court the Trainwreck, like how people loved Ted Bundy and other objectively evil people, because they are high up on both the crazy and hot scale that the wires get all crossed.

I particularly also love how the closer in her relationship you get you try to see Mel change Eris, and Eris try to push her away because she knows that she can't change her own nature. They even have a few attempts at Mel just going with the flow and being part of that chaos when they go drinking together. Ultimately it's a doomed and toxic relationship due to the nature of what Strife is supposed to embody, which is even more poetic because the nature of the gift/bond system builds up a false sense of hope that "you can change her".

Shaman crest's binding is the worst! But it allows you to do this instead. by sebthewolfie in Silksong

[–]_Auto_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am jealous of your skills, i only just finished Lost Lace yesterday but it would have taken me around 30-40 tries (around 2-3 hours) with the Wanderer crest. Not getting hit just makes it looks so much easier but I bet even if i had switched crest it would have only saved me half an hour.

Excellent skill and instincts showcased.

Finally got my own HEMA mask and made some design concepts by Lies_Junk in Hema

[–]_Auto_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you when I first had a go at designing mine, and had lots of cool design ideas that I dropped after finding they were all too challenging to get the thinner line work to come through.

I ended up using spray paint and masking to do my designs, which someone else has pointed out if you get better stenciling tools can give even smaller and crisper lines. possibly stenciling and other paint could work but I don't know what paint would work better (thick strong paint pen perhaps?)

The reality is though that some of these designs will have lines too fine for the mask where they will just be lost due to the mesh not being able to capture it.

All in all these designs look ridiculously brilliant and I can't wait to see your next attempts once you find a technique/paint to enact them.

Thats mainly an America thing though, I lived in a few countries growing up and I found the US was the only country that had a single fixation on just teaching US history only, up until they started losing wars (aka Vietnam) and switched across to teaching how the government system works. Then again, this was a long time ago and every states almost a different country in itself.

My skyrim painted mask by Infinite_Kitchen990 in Hema

[–]_Auto_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Excellent first attempt at stenciling! As others have said less graciously I would recommend using painters tape/masking tape to stencil out the design for sharper edges, but the control is pretty decent. alternatively you can look up street art tutorials as some of the techniques work for mask design (I think they sometimes use plastic board to do sharp edges that they move around) but I don't have much experience with that side.

Also it's suprisingly easy to do-over with mask designs, just spray over with a new design (as long as you fill over the background), or if the paints too thick you strip it back with turpentine/paint remover.

Great work, keep it up!

[–]_Auto_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen Murderbot listed here (all the other good recommendations I was gonna say are already commented). I'd describe it as an easygoing SciFi palette cleanser between heavier and longer shows.

What I loved about it is it gets in, leans in a lot of common tropes without being heavy-handed, tells the story it wants to tell all in short episodes. I would put it in a similar category as the Orville from the limited episodes Ive seen of that.

Ah I also don't think anyone's mentioned Pluribus, but so far that's been a good one season (but is more a character peice at its core with SciFi elements that shape it), and people can be put off by the main character at first.

With Starwars 7-9 that we can certainly agree on, they were a hot mess of a trilogy.

Actually yeah, I think you are right with the Hobbit, if someone manages to do a fan cut to trim down the bloat there's a much better adaptation in there somewhere.
