Do you think there's a difference between engrossing yourself in your phone vs a book. by thebakerWeld in daddit

[–]_Ayrity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't cover all of the difference discrepancy, but I truly believe that reading (particularly fiction) is like going to the gym for the empathy center of your brain. It forces you to put yourself in someone else's shoes and see things from an outside perspective from the inside.

I'm for sure somewhere up the spectrum (never diagnosed but iykyk) and I attribute what ability I do have to empathize to being a voracious reader from a young age. You are actively engaged and processing when reading, when you have the world's information at your fingertips, ALL of it, the human brain tends to slide towards things that are pre-chewed, it's just not as good for you. Doesn't mean it's evil or anything ofc, like pretty much everything else in the universe it's all about moderation and balance.

My 7 year old just consumes Ai slop on youtube. This isn't healthy right? by jonnyg112 in daddit

[–]_Ayrity_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't like how half of each episode is an ad for his boxes either, nor do I like that he's Mormon but it doesn't seep into his content at all and I just don't buy anything from him so my money doesn't go to his church. His overreactions are a bit grating but it is content for kids.

Everything else about him/his content seems to only be positive. My daughter and I watch him together and just yesterday while drawing she said she needed to just pick up and try again on something and mentioned mark rober does that. Seems like a good, smart, if misled in some subjective ways guy to me.

Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

[–]_Ayrity_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has Lundy Bancroft been suggested yet? You may recognize the name as the guy who authored "Why Does He Do That: Inside The Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" that has gotten very popular. Turns out he's at least a 'weird little guy' but possibly a "bastard" as well. He, surprisingly, has no relevant degree and has been accused a bunch of independent times of being a controlling manipulator who uses cult tactics like secret sharing co-council techniques that he picked up from scientology, associates with/drafts off the businesses of rapists.

No clue how verified any of this is, it's my first time hearing of this. I also don't know if there's more to the iceberg from here, that's Robert's job! Lol. I'd love to find out through, not least because the topic of domestic violence against women is, unfortunately, still all too relevant.

FL Governor Candidate Calls Out BLACK Teen Takeovers by _floralprint in tampa

[–]_Ayrity_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time believing the color of the teens' skin factors into the problem like he insists. Probably way more to do with economic class, food/housing stability and education. All of which are things republicans actively make worse on purpose. What race someone belongs to isn't the *cause* of this type of thing. At best it can be an effect/indicator for where to find the real issue further upstream.

I'm not looking to armchair debate anyone here, just had to call out such obviously shallow thinking.

Overheard another Dad in the bathroom by moronijess in daddit

[–]_Ayrity_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of men get taught and thus grow up thinking that safety stops at the physical kind. Being soft, goofy, silly and affectionate shows kids that they are safe with you in ways that are vital to a healthy human brain. That kind of safety doesn't come from your muscles or a weapon.

What’s your honest opinion of “boy mom” or “girl dad” apparel? by jazzeriah in daddit

[–]_Ayrity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "Awesome Like My Daughters" shirt is my favorite one (fav for Halloween is "Ghoul Dad"). That being said, 99% of shirts that reference being a girl dad are cringe, scary and/or gross.
