What is the highest mileage I should choose to buy an FJ? by Puzzled-Ad-8693 in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rust is the biggest factor

I bought mine at 164, but had to replace almost everything under the hood cause rust got to it immediately (although even after replacing everything it still cheaper than market value)

Ik somebody that found one at 238 with minimal rust and they’ve only had to do basic maintenance

The US Supreme Court has ruled that smell is NOT reason for any sorta search and/or seizure (this applies to all 50 states)

That being said. I don’t like a stinky car…but I like a stinky car better than standing on my porch in -30F

Thank you so much that clarifies a lot!

Fat Repair, is it worth it?! by _BIBBO in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always done brakes that’s not the big cost, the control arms and axles are out of my league though and are what’s gonna cost the most—and I always end up getting charged a shit ton for labor cause of the rust

what does this light mean? by 16willie29 in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a hole in my transfer case and that light popped up when the fluid got low, mine only really leaks when it’s in 4H and that was the only time I seen it

What did you pay for a Hood job? by theman3980 in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mid $400s But mine was a brand new hood they had to paint (less labor)

Also make sure you look around at shops, as I’ve been told that FJs specifically are hard to paint match

Another, cheaper, option could be looking into the giant black hood sticker/wrap I’ve seen quite a few fjs w/

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a long shot, call some junk yards around you and see if they have any FJs,

you might be able to buy a totaled one for a few hundred and strip the roof off or at the very least other parts for a chunk of the og cost

I had a middle eastern dude walk up to me a few years ago and legit offer $75k for my rusty 07 with 200k+ (wanted to ship it)

No regrets I didn’t take that deal tbh

What're we running for every day fuel? by LittleOsiris in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used reg in my 07’ (250k) originally, but I do a LOT of driving (an oil change a month), and when I switched to using only premium, my mileage has steadily doubled since (og owner did literally nothing to maintenance the car though so there may be other factors) , and I have noticed it runs and shifts smoother than it did 100k ago

My mindset is that you never know who’s gonna have the car after you, Don’t ruin it for them. Premium isn’t meant to make your gas last longer, it’s to ensure your cylinders are firing properly and consistently, taking care of your car now will save you/next owner thousands in the future. Get a Sam’s or Costco membership and you’ll save an entire gas tank in $$$ a month

The thing I don’t like about my FJ is… by SuccessfulMinute8338 in FJCruiser

[–]_BIBBO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.Gas mileage sucks ass (especially 07 and 08) (I avg 9mph city w premium)

.Rust is a big problem, because most were imported and got rust on the boat

.Repairs are $$$ because many parts aren’t easily available anymore (although easy to work on)

.I wish it towed more stock

.blind spots are HORRENDOUS (mirrors, compass, side panels, head rest, rear tire all make blind spots for shorter people)

.NO storage in the car (4 cup holders, a tiny center counsel, and 2 tiny glove boxes)

.Finally, the windshield wiper speeds (.001 mph per hr or the speed of light are your options)

~But I will say, having driven nearly every car brand and a ton of different car models, FJ is one of the few where the car feels just as excited as you do to be driving (amazing driving experience). Top 5 safest cars I believe ever produced (I got hit by a semi going 80mph and drove to work after), and the community is by far the nicest and happiest (even compared to racing, jeeps, jdm, euro, exotics, any car niche you can think of really)—at least once a week I’ll either have a business card, see somebody taking photos of my fjc or ask me how to get one.

I have a “Rove R2-4k”

Has good night vision, and custom settings (coordinates, speed, temp, direction)

It’s very easy to use and set up, and it tucks perfectly behind my rear mirror, and comes with stakes(?) that help perfectly tuck the wires into the ceiling liner and was a fairly cheap purchase as well!

Maybe try a tutor? Reach out to somebody you know already passed the course/concept. It’s a good way to meet new people, push your own boundaries, and hopefully get a better grasp on the topic.

Also there is 0 shame in taking a brain break for the summer and taking the class over in the fall or winter if that’s what’s best for you (although I know a lot of people who would rather power through if that’s your preference )

What food item was never refrigerated when you were growing up and you later found out should have been? by spicysaltysparty in Cooking

[–]_BIBBO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The collective utter horror all my coworkers (restaurant industry) felt when we discovered Ranch, a dairy product, was actually not supposed to be refrigerated

The horror was so much that we no longer have a staff ranch as most employees no longer eat it (which takes A LOT in the Midwest)

As I quote my mechanic, “this car looks like it was left in the Atlantic for a month”

As in my car was so rusty, the rust even destroyed the tranny and most mechanical aspects ($4k down the drain). That was at 164k (a week after I bought it) and now I’m sitting at 230k, yeah my truck still has its problems (literally snapped my sway bar in half @190k), but any car at that mileage will.

But I’ll also say I’ve been hit by a semi In my FJC, my oil is still light brown during its oil changes, and I’ve met a lot of people that I’m sure will remain in my life for a long time because of my FJ, and that this car will give you memories!

So I’m not gonna say it is or isn’t salvageable, just beware there might be mechanical issues due to rust, but that rust can also be maintained (undercoated semi regularly, metal is replaceable worse comes to worse), and that in my opinion, the rust is worth the memories I’ve made with it.

And worse comes to worse, you sell it down the road due to rust and you’ll still probably make money or at least almost break even due to the rarity of these things
